Elon, N.C. — Nearly half of North Carolina residents blame the Republican Party for the nation's economic crisis, according to a poll released Friday.

Elon University surveyed 477 people statewide this week and found that 47.7 percent felt the Republicans are more responsible for current economic problems, compared with 24.4 percent who blamed the Democrats. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.6 percentage points.

By a 43-to-33 percent margin, respondents said Democrats have done a better job of managing the economy than Republicans. The margin between Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama GOP candidate John McCain was much closer, with 44.2 percent saying Obama would handle the economy better and 41.8 percent favoring McCain's economic plan.

The economic crisis has heightened the battleground status of North Carolina, according to the poll.

The DCC has been hammering ads through blaming the republicans on everything bad about the economy, even here in AZ. The RNC is no where to be found and it is rather distressing. WTF is wrong with them?

People in NC are social conservatives. However GOP support of NAFTA, MFN, WTO has destroyed the economies of many textile and light manufacturing towns. Hard to be supporter of pro business policies of the GOP when you are out of a job. Wall Street diseaster is perceived as another experiment gone wrong in GOP trust in businessmen can do no harm. Small town economies were the first victims of Wall Street, now the rest of the country is getting what these small towns have suffered, economic policies that cause widespread economic dislocation on Main Street is no longer funny. Political policies based on too macro economics and too little on micro economics considerations is a recipe to lose elections. The only thing saving the GOP narrowly in NC is the fear of OB. If the Dems nominated HRC, McCain would be toast in NC. Hopefully the GOP will dodge the bullet and spend the next 24 months after Jan 2009 re calibrating some of their economic ideologies and total trust in businessmen.

Cooked poll.

There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.

227.529 people say it's Republicans while 116.388 people say it's Democrats and 133.083 had no response...got it.

The blame for this lies squarely on the RNC.

Job #1 is getting Republicans elected.
Job #2 is building the Republican brand.
Job #3 is trashing the Democrat brand.

They’re failing at all 3!

Insanity is only manifested by poor headlines.

Less than 1/2 the people think the GOP is to blame. And this is news?

Well, half the state of New Jersey seems to be moving there these days (don’t see why, as TN is nicer and has less taxes).

They don’t realize the dems have had control of the congress. We should have to pass a test to vote.

What they always leave out of these polls is asking... WHY do they think the party that caused this, caused it?!

The most popular response would be “Because that’s what NOBama, O’Biden, and Katy told me!”

Please. North Carolina just like every other southern states has added plenty of jobs under Bush.

Charlotte is the 2nd largest banking city in the nation which has benefitted from free trade (less so now with the financial crisis).

The Research triangle has been growing for decades and is centered mainly on information and biotechnology industries which are global in nature.

Free trade as a whole have helped states with low regulation and low taxes which is why the south is still such a solidly republican block.

The only reason NC is competitive is probably because of Charlotte which is heavily invested in the financial sector.

These numbers overall though reflect national polls about who is getting the blame for this financial crisis. Katie “the retard” Couric bought into Democratic talking points by saying that this crisis is caused by financial deregulation while Sarah Palin just smiled and repeated talking points.

Republicans need smarter frontmen.
