Viewpoint: High court on a precipice
Baltimore Sun ^ | 9/4/08 | Ellen Goodman

I really hate to bring it up. We already have two branches of our national government in full-scale meltdown. The president looks like a guy pleading before the parole board for early release. Congress makes "dysfunctional" sound like a compliment.

But there is the third branch, also in dire need of a rescue operation.

Oyez, oyez - or should I say, oy vey. I give you the Supreme Court. [snip]

George W. Bush's shadow will hover over the country long after he's gone, in the shape of John Roberts Jr. and Samuel A. Alito Jr. In just three years and counting, the Roberts court has chilled desegregation efforts, allowed the first abortion ban with no exception for a woman's health, and made it harder to claim employment discrimination and easier to mix church and state.

In the cold world of actuarial tables, the next president is almost certain to have one choice - and probably more. Candidates for retirement are Mr. Stevens, the 75-year-old Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the homesick David Souter.

That's three of the four moderate and liberal justices on a bench that has made an art of 5-4 decisions.

You do the math. If Sen. Barack Obama is elected, the court will stay pretty much the way it is. If Sen. John McCain is elected, Katie bar the door.

Mr. McCain, who plays a maverick on TV, promised the court to the right wing. He told the women of The View: "I want people who interpret the Constitution of the United States the way our founding fathers envisioned for them to do so." This prompted Whoopi Goldberg to ask if she should worry about being returned to slavery.

What an astute columnist Ms Goodman is, quoting Whoopi Goldberg with such aplomb.

I guess since Bush is a “Lame Duck” that is all the media needs to know and they don’t bother to notice he gets everything he wants from Congress.

What maverick? I haven’t seen anything maverick about McLame in I don’t know how many years. One can only hope it’ll be katie bar the door if the sheeple ever wakes up to all the pork the good ol’ boys loaded into that bailout.

Moderates???? Those justices make the ACLU look moderate.

You do the math. If Sen. Barack Obama is elected, the court will stay pretty much the way it is. If Sen. John McCain is elected, Katie bar the door.

Which is why this election is so important. We can not let Obama reload the court with three very young liberal justices. We need to put this count in constitutional loving justices hands for the next generation.

If Ms. Goodman would think for just a moment before she starts in with the Loony Left cant she might realize that the constitution worked just the way the founders intended. When the nation decided to outlaw slavery the constitution was amended by the process built into it, not by judge made rulings. If she is upset slavery was permitted in the first place, then her problem is with 6000 years of recorded history, not the US Constitution. In fact, it would be more helpful if she would pass this on to Justice Goldberg.

At least this liberal gets it that the SCOTUS ( and the federal judgeships) are one of the main consequences of this election

Wish the hell McCain and Palin would get on the subject

If Whoop-ass Goldberg knew the Constitution, then she’d understand that it was the document that ultimately ended slavery. But, of course, it is more important to get out those one-liners, than to say anything even remotely intelligent.

Does she and all the other Hollywood types understand what ass-clowns they make of themselves when they run their mouths and verbally ejaculate all over themselves?

Ellen has definitely gone over the cliff. She's referring to the far Leftwingtard nutcase Ruth Bader Ginsburg as a "moderate".

Must have had a couple of strokes or something.
