They absolutely should not have called FL before the polls closed! Some anecdotes say this happened because people could have been driving to the polls and became despondent when they heard. I would hope that they would still go and vote for the other races on the ticket, but whatever.
Florida contains two time zones and the Panhandle is very conservative. I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t by design....
Of course, it was by design. For some time, the Gore campaign knew that Florida would be the pivotal state.
As a consequence...
1. Gore campaigned in Florida past midnight of the Monday before Election Day.
2. Their election lawyers had been pre-schooled in Florida election law to challenge military ballots.
3. The Clinton administration had stopped the practice of having polling places on military bases.
4. But the best clue is that two Florida National Guard units were activated -- after the closing date for absentee ballot requests -- and then deployed out of the country a couple of days before Election Day.
5. In addition, the telephone polling of Palm Beach County (and its "butterfly ballot") was begun in mid-afternoon, so as to bring the legal case to bear the next day.
They knew it was going to be close. And they did everything they could to cheat their way to victory.
I don’t believe EVERY individual poll, but when they ALL give you a general indication, it’s foolish to believe otherwise. Obama is clearly ahead - every public poll shows that. In 2004, Kerry may have had a few leads, but nothing like Obama has. Also, virtually every vulnerable Republican is looking like they might go down in the senate too. That’s what is giving me the most anxiety.
Which just blows my mind. I don't give a damn if I am the only Republican in Hawaii, and Obama has already won the other 49, I'm not getting out of line. I'm going to cast my vote.
So, what in Hell is a matter with people? They fall for the same trick every stinking time. They are going to fall for it again this time, watch and see.
I feel the same way, even more so when there are other issues/candidates on the ballot.
