McCain's mother makes appearance at Peanut Festival

SUFFOLK, VA. (WAVY.com)-- Amidst the sights and sounds at the Suffolk Peanut Festival came a taste of politics.

At a stretch of white tents, voters picked up signs for the Democrats and signatures for the Republicans.

Senator John McCain's mother, Roberta greeted voters at the Republican tent.  Miki Miller watched as the 96-year-old paid special attention to the children,  those whose future could be in the hands of her son. 

"She was asking some of them if they knew their multiplication tables you know. She hoped their handwriting was better than her's because we were having her sign stuff and she didn't have her glasses."

Miller was pleasantly surprised to meet the McCain matriarch.

"She was very spunky, very nice to the children. It really was very inspiring to meet her."

Not far behind Mrs. McCain was Senate candidate Jim Gilmore.

The Senate candidate, squeezing out every last handshake as election night creeps ever closer and making sure his platform is something voters can sink their teeth into.

"I say we drill for oil in Alaska, Mark Warner says 'no'. I say we go off-shore and drill and Mark Warner is all over the map, but when he was governor he vetoed an off-shore drilling bill."

And they claim that McCain is unhealthy. Both of Obama’s parents died at early ages.

Yes, he's been bumming cigarettes on the road (he says because of stress) and reporters say he reeks of tobacco.

I was very surprised at how quickly McCain's mother stood up when she was introduced at the convention. There are people who are forty years younger who don't move as fast.

C-SPAN did a very good interview with her that is probably still online. There were one or two questions that she answered a tiny bit slowly, but basically she's still extremely sharp.

Obama said he's bummed a cigarette a couple of times during the campaign.

"But I figure, seeing as I'm running for president, I need to cut myself a little slack," he said.

Methinks the smoking is indicative of other “habits”...oh, that’s right, he’s admitted to using coke...what a great role model this Messiah is.
