Columnist Paul Krugman wins Nobel economics prize

STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Paul Krugman, the Princeton University scholar and New York Times columnist, won the Nobel prize in economics Monday for his analysis of how economies of scale can affect trade patterns and the location of economic activity.

Krugman has been a harsh critic of the Bush administration and the Republican Party in The New York Times, where he writes a regular column and has a blog called "Conscience of a Liberal."

He has come out forcefully against John McCain during the economic meltdown, saying the Republican candidate is "more frightening now than he was a few weeks ago" and earlier that the GOP has become "the party of stupid."

"Krugman is not only a scientist but also an opinion maker," economics prize committee member Tore Ellingsen said. He added that Krugman's analyses tend to back free trade and his research gives no "support for protectionism."

...and has a blog called "Conscience of a Liberal."

Interestingly, it's nothing but a bunch of blank web pages.

As a editorialist, he is a hack. As an economist, however, he is first rate

So in which venue does he abandon his principles? His NYT columns are not worthy of such high regard in the academic community. He has to be shoveling it with both hands somewhere. Or is it that he is dumbing down to sell newspapers, trying to anyway.

These global lefties have lost their friggin minds.

I’m serious.

This is like the part of the Bible that says the truth has fallen in the public square, everything is corrupt.

It’s no wonder out world is melting down.

His great crime-—and it is a great one-—is damaging the integrity of the scientist with hateful political opinionizing. Traditionally, scientific opinion was respected because of limits on the opinionating of the scientist and the scientist’s wisdom not to venture into realms outside his professional area of study to editorialize and divorce himself from objectivity. Krugman wallows in public opinions that are not grounded in sound economic theory or evidence. It is emotion—not the currency of a good scientist. All scientist’s motives are made less respected when such an individual is held up as the greatest of scientists. His scientific legacy will be colored by such activities.

Everybody being familiar with his academic works and career can’t question this decision. We need such longsighted economic analysts on our side!!!

Krugman - Economics
Chomsky - Linguistics

Both are out of their minds when it comes to politics.

But yet none of that was why he was awarded the Nobel. Back to the issue at hand, his work on international trade. That work is well done and deserving of the award.

One thing I have to say is leftists stick together. They only hire other leftists, they give only other leftists money, and only award prizes to other leftists.

Conservatives should take a lesson from them. Just look at how they only hire leftists in academia. I recommend watching all 10 parts and then buying the DVD.

The economics community has barely heard of this guy. He’s a lefty journalist!

Yeah, he is a terrible wannabe jorunalist and a lefty political hack ...

HOWEVER, before his time on the editorial pages of the NYT he held a well earned, well deserved reputation as a quite brilliant economist, his serious, academic economic writing and quantatitive analysis on international exchange rate mechanism and emerging market economic growth pattern are first rate.

People have been expecting he will one day win the Nobel for economics since his days as a member of President Reagan's Council of Economic Advisers (yup, really) and as a professor at MIT in the 80's.

I've read his stuff. Its a big “So what.” Given the exchange markets of late, I'd say he missed a few material points. Nothing he did matters.

To all

I don't read the economic academic literature but does Krugman actually publish anything other then political rants? Does he have an academic publishing record?
Am I to believe his contributions to the field are on par with James Buchanon, Hayek, Nash to name a few?
A there been any other political commentators to get the prize in it's history?

No. This is like Al Gore getting the Nobel prize. Its all political now. They just keep hyping and lauding each other. Every professor of economics publishes papers. That's how you get the be a life-tenured Lefty. His stuff is middling at best.
