Poll Finds Almost Half of New Jersey Adults Want to Move Out of State

Even New Jerseyans can't stand living in New Jersey, according to a new poll that said nearly half of adults residing in the Garden State want to pull up stakes.

The Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey Poll, released Wednesday, found 49 percent of those polled would rather live somewhere else.

(snip)

Poll participants cited high property taxes (28 percent), the cost of living (19 percent), state taxes (5 percent) and housing costs (6 percent) as the main reasons they want out. The poll also found that 51 percent of those who expressed a desire to leave planned to do so, with adults under the age of 50 making between $50,000 and $100,000 the most likely to flee.

"If you have the ability to leave and you don't see any possibility for change with the way the state is run — and that's the No. 1 issue here — you have to vote with your feet," said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute.

(snip)

"It's no wonder that New Jersey is a national joke," he said. "We've done it to ourselves with these just positively irresponsible policies."

(snip)

That migration depleted the state's tax coffers of an estimated $10 billion in personal income and $680 million in sales tax, according to the Rutgers report.

"This really illustrates among a lot of other things that the public has thrown up their hands," Murray said. "They don't feel that there's anything they can do that would change the situation."

(snip)

"One can only hope that the pendulum will stop swinging this way and start moving back the other way 'cause if it doesn't, you're going to see 9 million people suffer," he said.

"Or you're going to see the last person over the Delaware turn out the lights."

I encourage Republicans in Blue states to say they live in another state or underreport how many people live in the household.

I also encourage Republicans in Red states to over-report.

The next census is a huge issue with voting.

Liberalism is a virus

Most people get over a virus and acquire lifetime immunity. "Liberalism is Cancer" is more accurate.

I think the smartass is just a yankee attitude in general. My stepfather is from Northern New York, so I am used to it and it doesn’t bother me. Matter of fact, I just jab back and end up becoming friends. Although I have had to convince them that they aren’t as smart as they think. Alot want to come take advantage of the stupid “Jethro” suckers down here and I explained that in the south, we are all pleasant and polite. And will smile and walk away and think you are a complete moron. They think the smiling is because we bought the line of crap. haha

They say you have cock-a-roaches the size of corgis and that the mosquitos carry away small children.

You haven't lived until you've seen a cockroach devour a Corgi on a balmy Texas summer night.

I don’t appreciate people who can’t stand to live in the states like New Jersey after they so willingly voted to trash it for decades. The corrupt policies and politicians brought them what they wanted, and they should live with it.

Those from Massachusetts have all been running to New Hampshire to make a mess of our state.

“Oh, they don’t pick up your trash? You mean you have to go to the transfer station (dump) yourself?

Oh, your town reps have to commute to Concord and are in session just a few months out of the year, and they live and work in their communities, and you pay them only $3,000 a year?

Oh, this is not a town road and will not be paved and plowed for me?

Oh, you have to pay for your own preschool/kindergarten?

Oh, I know there was a gun club in the neighborhood of my new lovely mcmansion on 4 acres off the lovely country road, but I don’t like the way the guns sound, its so uncomfortable to know there are people with guns nearby.

Well, just fix that won’t we.”

I live in NJ. NJ is doomed. It will probably be the first state that actually goes bankrupt (well, maybe California). The pols have given away the store to civil servants with lavish retirement packages and those chickens are coming home to roost in the next 10 years or so. The hole is so large there is no possible way to fill it.

The only people moving out are the ones who actually have incomes, or the middle class elderly whose kids are already done with school and who don't put much burden on roads and other resources. You see the problem here? The people who are staying are the ones with little kids who cost $11-12k per year to educate in NJ, and the ones who don't have jobs. It's a recipe for disaster.

NJ is ensuring that entrepreneurs won't start new businesses here. They have a special penalty tax on anyone who makes more than $500,000. That means any successful S-corp would be stupid to start up or move into New Jersey, and any who can possibly move out will do so. All you have to do is hop over the border to PA and your taxes go down several percent if you are a successful small business.

Add in endless regulations that spiral out of control every year, and NJ has to be one the worst possible places to start or keep a business.

Anyway, NJ is indeed hopeless at this point. As soon as my youngest kid finishes high school I'm outta here. I own a clean internet based business and I can operate from any place on earth.

And I am far from the only one. Everyone I know who has a business that is not tied down geographically is making plans to leave this sinking ship. It's a good number right now but it will become a tidal wave in a few more years. I think NJ is already past the point of no return on this one.

Well, lessee... There is no more Republican majority anywhere, so we can’t blame Evil Republicans. Most businesses and industry have been chased away by the most unfriendly business climate in the country, so Evil Corporations are off the hook. Damn, we’re running out of places to point fingers, aren’t we?

Because the minorities keep believing the crap the Democrats keep throwing at them - they’re too stupid and uneducated to see that the Ds are runing the state.

I love New Jersey, especially here in the southern section, but were it possible to move, I would. There are hidden wonders throughout the state that the touristas and developers haven't found (and in that vein, I won't tell you). But that being said, the politicians and McMansion buyers from NY and PA have ruined the state.

The Garden State has seen farmland that once help feed the nation turned into suburban scablands by taxes. Near where I live, there were once pigfarms that thrived for over a hundred years, but new residents forced them out of business. Funny, they smelled before these people moved in, but these people were too stupid to know it. Don't even think about trying to run any kind of industry (even if you've been here forever). The NIMBYs and the liberal socialist they've been putting into office will kill your business plan (New Jersey is the least business friendly state).

But moving out of state may not really be an option. Delaware as recently as ten years ago might have been an option but uncontrolled developement there is going to cause huge problems in the near future. I can see the same problems for NC and SC. Look at Virginia. I was stationed at Quantico in the late sixties and the drive from there to DC was so beautiful, I thought I might like to live there someday. I could have never envisioned the nightmare the I-95 corridor from Richmond to DC has become.

I guess I'll live out my time here and with a little luck and Chris Christy's prosecutions of politicians it won't get alot worse. Who knows if a enough people leave and the dead people in North Jersey and Camden County lose the right to vote, it may actually improve here.

Nahh.

If things are so bad there why do they keep electing Democrat governors and state legislators? Why return far left liberals like LOUSE-enberg and Menendez to the US Senate??

We have a lot of grave yards in the Garden State.

(Yes, this really is a home in Alabama. I took the picture myself.)
