I’m sure 70-year old Janet who’s so in love with giving more to the government will have no problem when our coming socialized health care system deems her unworthy of keeping more of her life. “Over 70 years?! Of course, we think you should be put down! We can better use the resources spent on you for other people. Hey, you’ve lived a long life.”

I won’t shed a tear when it happens to you, Janet. Sow socialism, reap socialism and ALL its rewards.

If you are jealous of the $250K and think it is such a whopping great amount of money, there is another option. Instead of wallowing in your envy and misery take up plumbing and compete. I think plumbers charge outrageous prices too. The solution is competition.

Huh, since when do you pay taxes on gross income.

HD: Since last year, if you live in Texas.

The same thing is being proposed in IL.

The problem is people don't understand that a small business doesn't necessarily make a lot on what seems like a big gross. Also, most people don't realize that for a small business you might not be able to write off a large expense in a given year, but may have to depreciate or capitalize it over time.

For example, you may buy an xray machine that cost 25K, but you don't get to deduct the 25K, instead you have to calculate the cost over a 20 yr period even though the cost was incurred in one year. If gross receipts get taxed you might be running an actual deficit even though the return looks like you are making a big profit.

In the end, increased taxes on people means business is less inclined to expand and hire new people. The large pools of investment capital begin to look elsewhere for opportunity. IOW, less growth, fewer jobs.

The most insidious part of bambi's plan is the "tax credits" to those that don't pay any taxes, or pay very little. The "tax credits" are actually money that's taken from one group and given to another. IOW, redistribution of wealth. Just imagine what the govt. passing out other peoples money is going to do long term.

I’m a year older than she is and was raised to hate FDR and everything he did!

D: Oh brother.

Wait a minute, wideawake is right. They won the war and promptly lost the peace.

Yep, today, yesterday and tomorrow; what do you think of the author’s own educational health?:

“On health-care issues Mrs. Chittock thought Sen. Obama had a more realistic plan but felt Sen. McCain’s championing of competition in schools was the right proscription for what ails education.”

I’d rather proscribe ignorance.

People like Janet who engage in class-envy will never understand that they, themselves, are materialistic.

Probably because the Obama camp hasn’t made it clear.

So, let’s say your coffee shop grosses $300,000 per year. You have two employees earning $25k each, so your net after payroll is $250,000. You report the $250,000 as personal income. But, you still have to pay things like rent, electricity, FICA on your payroll employees, etc. You may have a final personal net income of only $40k.

Most people don't understand that you cannot spend the money you report as personal income; you have to invest it back into the business - it's there to cover expenses, and payroll whenever your accounts don't come in on time ( which is very often, these days) and a whole host of other things. But the government, and stupid employees act like it's sitting in your pocket. Its not.

If we are talking net, I don’t see the issue. If we are talking gross, that is clearly a problem. Has anyone ever figured out what the 250k is referring to...net or gross? I don’t know of any taxing involving gross, so I am assuming net but it would be nice to know for sure.

The discussion must be about net, not gross. Otherwise, the higher tax rates would not apply. The net is his profit that he can invest. BHO wants to confiscate his profits limiting his ability to expand his business. This scenario will be played over and over again. Even if this business owner does not want to use his profits to invest in his own business, he could use his profits to invest in other businesses.

Plumbers can charge a lot but I am not cut out to be one. Little stuff and minor repairs I can handle but when it is time to get a pro, I go ahead and do it.

I wouldn't mind seeing more competition in the field. The ones we deal with are usually booked solid.

“The most Mrs. Chittock and her late husband ever earned together in one year was about $50,000.”

Tells me plenty right there.
