Gloves come off in Lampson, Olson debate (TX-22 Tom DeLay’s old HR district)

Fort Bend County – Monday’s debate between District 22’s U.S. Representative Nick Lampson and his Republican challenger Pete Olson lasted a little over an hour. From the moment it started it was certainly charged. The debate was their one and only meeting on the campaign trail, and it was peppered with attacks and wise cracks.

Even with the spirited debate, there is still a question as to which direction the district will fall. It is Tom Delay's old seat, and he gave up under a cloud of legal problems and ethical questions. After Delay resigned, election laws kept Republicans off the ballot which cleared the path for Democrat Nick Lampson to win a redrawn GOP district. Now Republican Pete Olson wants to win it back. "Nick Lampson has a long history of telling you one thing, then breaking his promise when he goes to Washington," said Olson. "You've been distorting my record time and time again," said Lampson.

10.20.08: GOP's Olson blasts Democrat Lampson's record
- - In their only debate for Texas 22nd District race, Pete Olson delivered a withering criticism of Lampson's legislative votes Monday night over a seat that has drawn the national spotlight. Olson, a former Senate aide and Navy pilot, said repeatedly that Lampson talks good sense in the 22nd District while voting for tax increases and wasteful spending in Congress. "Broken promises and failed leadership" was Olson's refrain.
----------------

Politico, 10.20.08: Incumbent Democrat Nick Lampson and Republican challenger Peter Olson are both slamming each other as outsiders in the battle for the 22nd Congressional District outside of Houston. Earlier this month, the Lone Star Project, a non-profit group (Soros-Shadow Party funded – FlA) that has clashed with the Texas GOP, filed a criminal complaint against Olson, alleging that he committed fraud by voting in a Connecticut municipal election when he was registered in Virginia. Olson has denied the charge, which the group submitted to Fairfax County, Va., investigators. Earlier today, the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee shot back at Lampson after RedState.com, a GOP blog, revealed that the congressman’s wife, Susan, is registered to vote at a house owned by the couple and occupied by several of the couple’s grandchildren. “This is a campaign between Nick Lampson and Peter Olson and people shouldn’t be dragging family into it,” said Lampson spokesman Trevor Kincaid. “I don’t even know Mrs. Olson’s name, and we’re not dragging her into this campaign.”

U.S. HR TX-22: Pete “Top Gun” Olson(R) vs Nicholas Valentino “Soros Boy” Lampson(D)

Our internal PAC polls have Olson slightly ahead, but we are worried. As Barak Obama, the Houston Chronicle endorsed “Soros Boy” Lampson, because he got $42 million in TX-22 earmarks, including NASA. Also I have to admit that Lampson did a good job helping people after Hurricane Ike devastated Harris(Houston), Galveston, and Chambers County. Some areas in Houston were without power for two weeks. I and colleagues/friends put up 15 families from my brother’s Houston law Firm, along with my parents, here in Key Biscayne-Miami for 10-14 days. FEMC screwed around and didn’t get communication centers set up in Houston, so Lampson called Nancy Pelosi and got $200,000+ from the DNC/DCCC et. al. to set up a large communication center with phones, internet computers, and volunteers to help people. There were areas in these three counties that Ike wiped off the map, particularly in Chambers and East Galveston County. It was as bad as what Katrina did to Mississippi. The current local damage estimate from Ike is $22 billion.
TX-22 is a Top 5 Democrats-Soros Shadow Party (“D-SSP”) National initiative race. There appears to be good horizontal and vertical support for Pete, but as many National and State races, money is a problem and the D-SSP is serious out-gunning us. Pete is a very sharp individual and will do an outstanding job in Tom DeLay’s old HR seat.
Any and all help from local FR members in getting out the vote for Pete would be greatly appreciated. – FlA

Nick Lampson(D): $1,906,000 - $ 1,176,000
Pete Olson(R): $1,478,000 - $469,000

The Soros Shadow Party is up to their old tricks again, just like they did to Tom DeLay……

I've posted recently that I got polled last week - and thought it was a real poll. It began with a presidential question then led into a question you had to rate as more favorable, less favorable, etc.

The first question was in regard to all the help Lampson brought into the area following Hurricane Ike.

The second question was how did knowing that Olson voted illegally affect my feelings about him.

At that point I blasted the boy calling saying this wasn't a poll it was an attack ad and I would not finish the call. When he tried to argue with me I said something my Mother would not approve of. ;^)

10.20.08 Video: Olson-Lampson Debate news coverage

10.21.08: Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is set to host a private reception for Pete Olson on Wednesday, October 22nd in Houston. The general entrance fee is set at $100, while VIP access will cost $1,000 per person. U.S. Rep. Nick Lampson's conservative Houston-area seat is widely seen as one of the GOP's top pick-up opportunities in an electoral environment that has turned sharply against the party. Olson is a former aide to U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-San Antonio). "Pete Olson continues to run an aggressive campaign in TX-22 against incumbent Nick Lampson. Charlie Cook has rated this seat as a toss-up," an invitation to the event obtained by PolitickerTX.com reads. With the conservative bent of the district, the invitation says, "Olson is well positioned to return this seat to the Republican column. This remains one of the best Republican pick-up opportunities in the country..." Olson has also been getting fundraising help in the closing weeks of the campaign from the Texas Republican congressional delegation. U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Dallas), who chairs the House Republicans' Battleground fundraising program, has cut a $5,000 check for Olson, according to a Sessions aide. Other members have been hitting the phones on Olson's behalf. - PolitickerTX

10.21.08 Broken Promises and Failed Leadership: That was Pete Olson’s message to CD22 squatter Nick Lampson Monday night. It is still hard to believe that Nick Lampson represents our district. Here is what Slick Nick had to say about us: - - he has voted the consensus of the Republican-friendly district. Can you believe that? Does anyone in their right mind think that the ‘consensus’ of the voters of CD22 is that Nancy Pelosi should be Speaker of the House? And yet Slick voted for her and follows her orders like a dog on a leash. He also voted to cut funding for the troops and let the Pelosi/Murtha strategy of ’slow-bleed’ defeat us in Iraq. Do you really think that is the ‘consensus’ of the voters in CD22? He voted to allow felons to receive student loan benefits. Consensus of the voters of CD22? And my favorite, he voted to do away with secret ballots in union elections. Why? So the thugs could control the vote. And he also voted to reduce funding for the team that investigates union corruption. Now, that may well be the ‘consensus’ in the Lampson household but is that the ‘consensus’ of the voters of CD22? Laughable. Nick, go home. Go back to your wife in Beaumont, maybe she misses you. CD22 voters, tell your friends and neighbors about this carpetbagger in our district. Tell them to let Slick Nick know the real consensus of the voters of CD22 by - Lone Star Times

Thats correct.

I have my Olson sign in the yard.

My neighbor has one as well.

We are a strong Republican district.

Lampson doesn't even identify himself as a Democrat.

But your district includes Galveston, and that’s certainly a liberal/entitlement bastion.
Here’s hoping they can’t vote in that area.

No, I think you are confusing my district with Ron Paul's.

I always liked Fred. I voted for him in the primary, even though he had dropped out of the race by then.

Redbob, parts of rural Galveston county are in TX-22, but I don’t think it includes Galveston Island. This is a conservative district, though not as strong as it was before DeLay redew the lines out here. I think enthusiasm for Palin will help the GOP vote effort, which will allow Pete to defeat the carpet-bagger by a comfortable margin. The only reason the carpet-bagger won in 2006 (a good dem year) is because the Republican running against him was a write-in, and there was a special election for TX-22 on the same ballot, so it was confusing. Even then, the race was still close.

Mainland Galveston County is TX-22, Nick Lampson. Galveston Island is TX-14, Ron Paul. The southside of TX-22 is where the voting concern is for Olson.

This was in an article in the Dallas Morning News today, who endorses McCain-Palin.......

10.22.08 AP: Democrats see chance for more wins in House races

Lampson’s seat in the 22nd Congressional District should have been an easy pickup for Republicans, with a traditional 60 percent GOP population. Lampson won the seat in 2006 after DeLay resigned his leadership post amid a legal and ethical scandal and a write-in candidate replaced him. In 2004, Bush carried the district with 64 percent of the vote.

But Lampson has buried himself in constituent work since taking office and cast a few key votes that put him at odds with Democratic leadership, including a vote against the $700 billion economic rescue plan. He said he has held 600 town halls attended by 60,000 people since he first won the seat. “It’s given me an unbelievable amount of momentum in winning the election,” Lampson said. “I have had so much contact with the public it’s unbelievable and they saw me in the light of the leader that is responsive to the community.” Lampson also could be helped by Obama’s candidacy. About 10 percent of the voting age population in the district is African American. Another 18 percent is Hispanic. “I expect there will be record turnout of African Americans even in places like Texas where Obama is unlikely to win,” said David Bositis, a senior research associate the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies.

GOP challenger Pete Olson, a former Naval officer and chief of staff to Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn, declined to be interviewed for this story. He has accused Lampson during the campaign of being a thinly disguised liberal whose voting record is out of sync with the district. In late October, the National Republican Congressional Committee reduced the $1.5 million it planned to spend on television ads in the Lampson-Olson race by at least $900,000 and sliced the time they were to run from three weeks to one.

10.21.08 The Hill: Lampson the latest NRA Democrat
Calling him a “great friend to gun owners and hunters in the Lone Star State,” the National Rifle Association (NRA) on Tuesday formally endorsed Democratic Rep. Nick Lampson (Texas), who is in a pitched battle to continue representing a solidly Republican district. The endorsement from the powerful gun lobby — which has already blessed Lampson with an “A” voting record — could go a long way toward combating the attempts by Lampson’s Republican challenger, Pete Olson, to paint Lampson as a liberal. The Olson campaign did not respond to a request for comment. Lampson is now at least the seventh House Democrat to win an endorsement from the Second Amendment protectionist lobby.
