Sounds to me from the little bit of info available is that it was a deliberate attack on wanted individuals, probably AlQaeda. I don’t think WMD’s had anything to do with it.

U.S. Gunships, Airborne Troops Raid Syrian Village

Nine people were killed on Sunday when U.S. helicopter gunships and airborne troops attacked a Syrian village along the border with Iraq.

A media source told Syria’s state television the gunships landed troops that stormed the al-Sukkariya ranch, eight kilometers deep into Syrian territory.

The four gunships, the source added, returned to Iraq after the “aggression.”

The privately-owned Al-Dunia television said an unknown number of American helicopter gunships attacked Al-Sukkariya, east of the capital. It did not say when the attack happened.

“Nine people were killed and 14 wounded in the raid, which hit a group of builders while they were working,” the report said.

It added that “all the victims are civilians.”

There was no immediate comment from the U.S. military command in Iraq.

Obama would significantly weaken America, no doubt about it.

If confirmed, a US strike inside Syria is likely to have been targeting al-Qaeda operatives. Al-Qaeda in Iraq, the regional terrorist group allied to so-called “core al-Qaeda” based in Pakistan, has operated across the Syria-Iraq border in recent years.

Israel last year launched air strikes inside Syria. Officials later claimed later that the target was the site of a nuclear facility which was under construction with the help of North Korea.

not necessarily, there was a mid-grade border conflict with syria a few years back, from what I have read and been told, that got very little press at all.

Obama: “I’ve just been informed that our troops have air-raided villages and killed civilians in Syria. I am deeply disturbed by this use of force and ask the UN to sanction George Bush at once. Colin Powell agrees with me completely.”

The U.S. military in Baghdad had no immediate comment.

They've been putting up more bomb shelters around here lately and warning us that "this is still a war zone - be vigilant," even though it's been calm for quite some time now.

I wonder what's up?

The eyewitnesses said that the seven killed men were supposedly construction workers.

Wow, must be some union guys going after a non-union job site...

the Syrian border town of Abu Kamal

I fully expect Abu Kamal to be the name of the next Democrat presidential candidate.

Anything larger than a Blackhawk and Apaches and I’d say you were right. If a CH47 or a CH53 was involved we just took something big.

Two of the helicopters reportedly landed in the village, where eight American soldiers jumped out and carried out the operation. The soldiers quickly returned to the helicopters, and all of the craft left the scene.

It was the first time the U.S. has attacked on Syrian land.

American military spokesperson Sergeant Brooke Murphy said official are investigating the report.

The targets reportedly were construction workers and were civilians. Israel reportedly attacked the area last September, and most reports indicated that the target was a nuclear site under construction.

The Bush administration has charged Syria with not preventing Al Qaeda terrorists from infiltrating into Iraq.

I’ve always thought McCain was missing an opportunity re: missile defense.

But as it stands now, the issue that has hurt McCain the most (deserved or not) has been the economy. He needs to spend the last 10 days hitting 0bama on the economy. Socialism is BAD for the economy. Tax hikes are BAD, etc.

Actually if we invaded Syria during the early part of the war we would have found the WMDs, IMO.

Considering that all we have so far is the Syrian's word, this thread needs input from an at least slightly more reliable source, DEBKA. They actually have a brief report up on it:
Syrian TV reports US helicopter forces kill 9 on Iraqi border
October 26, 2008, 8:32 PM (GMT+02:00)

Eye witnesses are quoted by Syrian state TV as describing four US helicopters striking a house in Al-Sukkariya near the Iraqi border killing 9 people and injuring four. Two landed and 8 US soldiers disembarked for the attack before the helicopters took off with all the troops aboard. The targets were reportedly Islamic extremists, al Qaeda. There has been no US comment on the incident. If confirmed, it would be the first time that US forces had operated on Syrian soil.
