NAGPUR: It is one monkey business even cops are finding difficult to deal with. Cops who do not fear criminals or their ways are now harassed by a monkey and its antics. A single monkey is troubling the policemen in three police stations— Sakkardara, Ajni and Imambada— of east Nagpur.
The angry simian has already left a trail of terror having injured 10 uniformed cops from Sakkardara and Imambada police stations and traffic department with its teeth and nails. In the past two months, the monkey created havoc at Sakkardara police station on a couple of occasions.
The latest victims of this scary simian are police inspector Suresh Shimpi of Sakkardara police station and an employee of Maharajbagh zoo, who was part of the team sent to trap it on Thursday. It all started when Shimpi reached the police station at 9 am and was about to park his bike. The inspector was taken completely by surprise after the monkey jumped on his head.
“Thankfully, my head was protected by the helmet. But when I tried to free myself from its clutches, it bit on my upper left arm,” said Shimpi who was rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital after the attack. Shimpi was supposed to leave for Nashik on Friday on holiday to join his family during the Diwali.
Earlier, two traffic constables were attacked on Wednesday as they had just entered the police station in their vehicle. Assistant sub-inspector Gaikwad, who had just resumed work after a leave, was also bitten by the monkey at Sakkardara police station.
Constable Nandu Kuhikar, who stays at the police residential quarters adjoining Sakkardara police station, was also attacked. Sub-inspector R L Mahajan and head constable Sanjay Adlak were also attacked but escaped unhurt. Adlak had to lock himself up inside the crime room of Sakkardara police station after being chased. Senior inspector D R Patil of Sakkardara said that he now always carries a stick after having escaped an attack by the monkey by a whisker.
Not safe inside police stations too
NAGPUR: “The monkey nearly bit me inside my cabin in the police station. I somehow managed to scare it away with the stick,” says senior inspector D R Patil of Sakkardara who also complained that the forest department and municipal department were ignoring the problem.
Interestingly the monkey mostly targets policemen in uniform while ignoring those in muftis. The theory going round in the area is that the animal was separated from its group at the city airport where a monkey catcher captured over 100 simians and released them in the forest. Victims believe that the monkey may have developed this grudge against ‘khaki’ as the catcher responsible for his separation from the group may have donned uniform of that colour.
Dr Sunil Bawaskar, in-charge of Maharajbagh zoo, said his team tried to trap the monkey but had to call off the attempt as load-shedding in the evening made it impossible to see anything. Still, the monkey was hit by tranquiliser gun twice but managed to slip away into the darkness in the LIG colony of Nandanvan.
