I have Democrat friends who are terrified of an Obama presidency.

I can beat that. I have an uber-fiscally conservative friend who's a flaming social liberal and is voting for Obama. I think it's Bush Derangement Syndrome or something.

If that’s how this friend thinks of you then you have lost nothing. Forget the friend and go on with your life.

Yep. It can be lonely out there. The love and tolerance they are so fond of do not extend to family members or life long friends who disagree politically. And it does feel like you are “coming out” when you make the tiniest little ripple from the right.

I have one friend that should know better who I believe will vote for Obama. He is still my friend, of course, and, should Obama win, I suspect that he'll learn the error of his ways quickly. But I'm not going to disown him as a friend over this, though I wish he would think this through a little better.

If Obama wins, he will tell you you were right within 2 years, and renew the friendship. If McCain wins, info about Obama that comes out after the election may prove you right. Messiahs have a tendency to lose their hypnotic effect after they have lost an election. Either way, you can’t worry about a friend who is so shallow.

It's a good vanity.

Good vanities include the thread poster sticking around to respond to the subsequent posts. He has four posts in the two weeks he's been here, and three of them are vanities. I smell troll.

My friends all support McCain/Palin. I wouldn’t associate with anyone that supports obama.

Not this election. I lost all mine years ago, including some relatives. As I get older I chose not to waste my life on people who stand for nothing, which is usually liberals.

And no, I don’t miss them one bit.

Ditto that, including my own sister and her children. They were all infected with Bush hatred. Every time I looked at my niece all I could think of was that she had had 3 abortions by the time she was nineteen. At the same time they were all a bunch of PETA whackos. There were other factors as well, but politics did pay a large part in my estrangement from them.

What kind of ugly, inflammatory crap is that? I don't think it's necessary for him to perform a character assassination on his ex-friend.

Some people are just honestly, sincerely, deeply and truly... wrong. They don't have to fit any of the nasty labels you've helpfully provided.

At least you don’t have to live with him! lol.

I’m a rightwing wacko and my wife is a lib. This election cycle has been harder than most. :-) So much for Obama being the great unifier!

However, I knew what I was getting into when I married her. We’re originally from Canuckastan and her whole family worshiped Pierre Trudeau so I’m used the commie messiah worship crap. :-)

Just a friend? Hell, I’ve lost family members and I don’t give a sh*t.

He/She’s not the person YOU thought they were if they can end a long-time friendship over politics. They Great Uniter is doing his best to tear this nation apart.

In 2004 I dealt with a now former friend, current infrequent acquaintance of mine. The night before the election, he messages me to tell me how horrible and stupid I am and how everyone loves Kerry and he’s going to win. We went at it for about an hour. If it weren’t for gatherings with mutual friends, I’d have probably not seen him since.

In 2008, I have severed ties with 2 people. Neither one I particularly liked but this was a good excuse. There will be more, but only if THEY cause me to do so. Those people took gratuitous shots at my beliefs without my having instigated them. In fact, I rarely instigate anyone into a political argument. If they start sh*t, I cut them loose. I’ll be better off in the long run, and so will you.

I will not be around anyone voting for Obama. Anyone who votes for Obama at this stage is part and parcel of the “high-jacking” of our government.

Same here. A friend of 30+ years emailed me with a joke about “McLame”. I replied that it was unusual for her to make fun of anyone’s injuries, no matter Political affiliation. She replied saying since I wasn’t supporting Obama I was a racist. I blocked her email.

My sister said the 9/11 attacks were “weird” and classified herself as “brave” for voting for John Kerry. We still have a relationship, but we've agreed not to discuss politics at all.
Unfortunately, may subjects can be considered “political”, so we just don't talk much at all.

One of my best friends announced that he was voting for Obama in an email exchange several of us were having. He's a very intelligent guy, but he's not politically savvy or informed enough to understand who he's voting for. I dropped the subject. B Hussein is not worth losing someone who is like a brother to me. All I can do is cancel out his vote with mine.

Yeah, I ‘ve had the same thing happen with guys I’ve known since high school and college. Said the exact same things “I don’t even know you...” Now I’m approaching 40 and have become much more conservative over the last 20 years. I’d bet that once the election is over things will remedy themselves. They always get tense between my friends and I. It goes away.

but am to the point where I don't care any more.

It is liberating but this election is not petty.

I ask my family or my friends "how much prison time should I get if I refuse to pay for your health care or if I refuse to give you part of my earnings?"
