A swing and a miss in Erie
It was a throwaway line meant to be a crowd-pleaser. But it fell flat.
On Thursday at a rally in Erie, Pa., Sarah Palin touted the victors in the World Series to thousands of supporters. "I am thrilled to be here in the home state of the world-champion Philadelphia Phillies," Palin said.
The crowd booed.
Philadelphia is a seven-hour drive from Erie, which is in the state's far west. Erie's baseball devotions are split between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cleveland Indians. (Pittsburgh and Cleveland are about two hours away.)
Palin has been booed by Pennsylvania sports fans before. Earlier this month, the Republican vice presidential candidate was loudly heckled at a Philadelphia Flyers game.

I’m so glad they’re reporting this incredibly important information, as opposed to all that useless hooha about our possible next president’s ties to terrorist, his failure to help out his own family members, his having run on a socialist ticket, his people using government computers to dig up dirt on citizens, his past use of his opponent’s divorce records, and some silly tape a certain LA paper won’t play, though they had NO problem with those previously-mentioned “private” divorce files. THIS is SO much more important.
lol. No they boo’ed pretty much. There was not a cheer to be had. But like others have said, they were boo’ing her statement, but not her.
This wasn’t Mrs. Palin’s fault, she didn’t know people in the western part of Pennsylvania don’t like the Phillies. No one should blame or criticize her for this. She’s from Alaska, she doesn’t know anything about Pennsylvania.
But any such cheers would not be newsworthy. Not part of the storyline. Just as McCain is no longer an independent maverick Republican...his storyline was changed.
Hmmm, I sometimes wonder if there is an underlying principle guiding the MSM's selection of storylines...
You owe me some brain soap...
That was it? Big whoop.
ONE NEWS NOW.com: "CUBAN-AMERICANS 'ALLERGIC' TO OBAMA-TALK" by Chad Groening (ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A Cuban-born author and anti-Castro activist says Barack Obama won't make any inroads with voters in the Cuban-American community by pushing a wealth redistribution message. That community, he says, is all too familiar with the consequences of such a policy.") (October 30, 2008)
Yawn...Philly and Pittsburg fans boo Santa Claus and their own moms....
You should post that around with the caption, “Obambi prepares for second thirty minute video presentation, as the first one falls flat.”
Priceless!
They were booing the Phillies much like they boo Bill Ayers’ friend, Barack when his name is mentioned. No big deal.
I doubt many cheered for the Phillies, but the booing would have been good natured.
I grew up in the Erie area - Crawford County. Western PA is as different from the Philadelphia area as it is from Boston, and Cleveland and Pittsburgh have long been the favored teams for football as well as baseball. .
Western Pennsylvania has long considered itself separate from the easterners as far back as the first settlers after the American Revolution. Looks like the speechwriter wasnt familiar with Pennsylvania.
At least she didn’t praise the Eagles, or this election would be lost.
On that one line? No, she got razzed a bit but it was good natured. You don't go inot Pirates country and boost the Phillies. Shades of the 2004 campaign when Kerry forgot he was in Michigan and gave a cheer for the Ohio Buckeyes.
The boos would have been good natured 'booo...we don't like the Phillies.' Not...'boo, the 12,000 of us who showed up don't like Sarah Palin.'
But hey, LATimes...keep reporting the real news (ya know, Bronx cheers about baseball teams). Don't want to sully the outstanding journalistic tradition out there in LA by releasing the Khalidi tape...nah. And hey Times...there is another 'deep' story you can look into here in PA...I hear there is this (looks around and whispers) groundhog, with quite a cultlike following of his own. Does America 'know' which way Phil is going to vote?
And in Erie, PA the there would be alot of 'good natured' baseball/football booing at any time (and none of it would never, ever involve the Phillies). Pirates and Indians; Steelers and (snorts) Browns (but no one really admits to ever being a Brownies fan...PaMom ducks and runs).
It was not the Phillies they were booing it was what Philidelphia has given us in NW PA, higher auto insurance, higher medical cost, higher debt through state bond issues to prop Philly up and of course tax, borrow and spend “Fast Eddie” Rendell. Other than the thoughts of Philly and Eddie Palin energized the overflow crowd of 8,000.
It shouldnt be surprising that cheering Philadelphia in Pennsylvania just doesnt work.....There, fixed it. Philly isn’t well thought of any place in PA. It is a hole (literally) in which they throw our money. One of the ballot questions up for vote this Tuesday is if taxpayers want to borrow 400 million to fix water and sewer systems in PA. If the legislature borrows 400 mil., 350 million will go to Philly and Pittsburgh, never do anything for water or sewer and 50 million will go to politicians.
She probably didn’t know, and they probably did boo. So what. At least she didn’t refer to the “Nittaly” Lions, like Obamalamadingdong. O’bama would never admit he made a mistake. His arrogance doesn’t allow it.
Hell, Erie is closer to Canada than Philadelphia OR Pittsburgh.
