Set your page results preference to 20:
1.) Click Account at the top of any of the latest posts pages.
2) Click My Preferences.
3.) Click 20 results per page under Browsing.
Disable unnecessary sidebars:
1.) Click Account at the top of any of the latest posts pages.
2.) Click Manage blocks.
3.) Disable as many sidebars as you can. I left only the Browse by Forum, Breaking News and Front Page News sidebars on mine. You can reconfigure them again after the elections rush is over.
Thanks Jim!
Will do.
Done. Thanks
These steps will help on beta too.
In previous times of heavy load, FR would automatically limit the number of results returned. Has John removed that?
Thanks Jim.
As they say, better late than never.
Under Account > Manage blocks I disabled everything except Breaking and Front Page. It loads MUCH faster. Thanks!

Thanks, Jimrob.
BUMP
With all the money raised by FR one would think they could afford better servers and the like. Many web pages have a ton of traffic without crashing all the time - or not loading.
Odd.
Thanks for that tip Jim! Tenfold improvement in load time!
Ah! That’s why it’s slow.
Everyone is changing their preferences!
;^P
Beta wouldn’t load for me either. I’m at the office and have higher speed here and all of FR was down a few minutes ago.
Thank you Jim.
What’s the traffic like today? Is that why we’re finding things slow-going?
ping to self for home computer
Thank you Jim. I would advise everyone to do this. It will reduce hits. That will speed everyone up.
Bump for later!
I get an error/can’t load everytime I click on Account.
Done.
But since you have direct access to the backend database I would just go ahead and make a global change for everyone to reduce your database query time and hung up web server threads.
Of course it may be too late to do that big of a query now with the load coming in :).
Just my 2 cents worth having dealt with thing like this for other database driven sites in my full time job...
Thanks for the tips and the site, Jim.
You’ve helped to people to network and get some stories “legs” this election. Without the web and talk radio, there election would not be this close. Even Obama’s “10 point lead” doesn’t seem that way to them now.
Thanks Jim, that has helped a bit.
Thanks John, I know you guys are busy tonight.
tet.
Drudge has no images on his site. I’m guessing all major sites are stripping down due to traffic
Thank you for the advice! It greatly increased my load time...
I would accept I keep getting a 404
Just saw that, too. Maybe we’ll crash the web. Lol!
Done.
Jim, Thank you for all you have done these past years. You are a Great American!
Done, and Ping.
Thanks!
Let each FReeper decide which Forums he/she is interested in seeing as a default setting.
I finally got my preferences changed. I don’t see that much improvement and it is still loading very slow for me. Also tried the beta site and no improvement there. Disappointing.
Hi! I clicked “20 results per page”, but my computer wants to hold on to 50. It won’t go to twenty, even after shutting down the computer, and re-opening it. Sigh. Any suggestions?
Thanks so much. I wouldn’t want to spend election-eve anywhere else but here.
Jim
Thanks for asking us to do this.
Please repost this again as others need to know.

LOL!
Good luck tonight, Nully!
Heads up on settings...
Bump!
bttt
click 20 results per page and then hit refresh.
Thanks Jim, did all that but FYI - still getting very slow page loads and lot of time-outs here. Beta won’t come up at all...
My cable connection shows 7 mb at speedtest.net so I think I’m ok, but open for any other suggestions.
Good luck to you too.
When the Nazi government bled Germany dry, they started invading neighbors to keep their economy going...
Thanks, if things don't load faster, I'll try the beta link.
Well, we suffered a genuine DOS attack about a 45 minutes ago. Completely maxed out our incoming bandwidth. It was about a hundred times our usual incoming load. Maxed out our entire bandwidth capacity. Someone is definitely messing with us. But our outgoing load has been two to three times normal all day as expected. I expect it to double again this evening.

LOL.
Like THAT hasn’t crossed my mind.
;-)
Same here.

Thanks for the heads up Jim! I gave up on FR about 2:15 pm mtn and went over to finish surfing on beta and then it went poof as well. Gave me sometime to check something out after seeing a comment last night at ctv.ca about Madelyn Dunham having “lived through two WW’s.” I went over to “The Honolulu Advertiser” and lo and behold Jr said it! A genius he isn’t!
Quote:
Yesterday, on the campaign trail in Charlotte, N.C., Obama called Dunham a “quiet hero” in his first public comments after her death.
“Some of you heard that my grandmother who helped raise me passed away early this morning,” Obama said to supporters. “She has gone home. She died peacefully in her sleep with my sister at her side and so, there’s great joy as well as tears. I’m not going to talk about it too long because it’s hard to talk about. I want everybody to know, though, about her. Her name is Madelyn Dunham. She was born in Kansas in a small town in 1922, which means she lived through the Great Depression, she lived through two world wars.”
