Washington State just approved physician assisted suicide. Our President Elect has promised Planned Parenthood that his first act will be the Freedom of Choice Act. He will possibly appoint one or two Pro Choice judges to the Supreme Court.

I don’t think that in 2010, or 2012, things will be looking up for the Pro Life Movement in the US. How many people who voted for Obama even know what FOCA is? How many Catholic Bishops educated their flocks as to what FOCA is and that one candidate rabidly supports it?

In the San Antonio paper, they had interviews where some Catholic clergy who were supporting Obama. I applaud those Bishops who spoke out for the unborn, but until Catholic Bishops across the board start playing hardball with pro-abort Politicians, and clergy by excommunicating them in a very public way, and making sure every parishioner knows exactly, and very graphically what goes on in an abortion, and what the impact of FOCA will have on minor girls-not teenage girls, but girls even younger who can be trotted off to have an abortion without their parent’s knowledge or consent, the
impact it will have on physicians who refuse to do abortions, and Catholic hospitals, well, I just don’t see things getting better for the unborn.

Part of this, as I understand it, is a reaction among the episcopacy that's really more passed down than anything else to when excommunication WAS used for political purposes and abused. It was not in the US or recent, but they want to be careful and not repeat the mistakes. I agree that the time for being careful is over, but somebody like Chaput is going to have to get it started.

It would also help if the bishops would speak more often.
