The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.
They already do that in California.

Sending a child to government school really ought to be considered child abuse. Or are they going to mandate that homeschoolers and private schools also comply? (Or else!)

An awful idea. I already volunteer in my community by teaching ESL. But I chose to do it. I will NOT be bullied into it.
The best thing about volunteering is that people are happy to be there and enjoy it and don’t want to make trouble for other people.
No what will be ruined.
I understand Japanese schools, for example, have no janitors. The students themselves clean up after themselves every day.
I would look forward to this kind of approach to education, and teach American kids to look after themselves. But I don't think that's what anyone who is behind this silly "community service" sh!t really has in mind.

An important note is how this will be done. For years, whenever the federal government adds requirements to local schools, they do it with the threat of “compliance, or lose your federal aid money.”
That is, more “unfunded mandates.” It will have to be coercive, otherwise the vast majority of schools wouldn’t do any of the things the feds demand.
How can you “choose” to serve when it is required?
Does getting this fool out of office count as community service?
Hmm......to curb illegals and their employment here, does this mean the kids will be out picking lettuce, etc? I wonder.........

I'm extremely suspicious of any governmental service oganization with the word 'corps' in its title. After the Marine Corps*, they're all low rate wannabes.

There is the little matter of the 13th Amendment, which bars compulsory servitude (otherwise known as “slavery”).
Maryland already has this in place. I believe alot of other states do as well.

getting kids involved in the community is a brilliant idea, and at just under an hour a week, it is almost nothing- people should be doing this on their own...

Just the same way you "voluntarily" pay your federal income tax.
You still have the choice, but the choice will be much more easy to make: serve or go to jail.

Volunteering yourself is a good thing, and I have done my share, but requirement does away with the voluntary part - will the press call him on this or follow along while their guy morphs the meaning of the word? We tried to warn them.
This is a large aspect of his reparations plan. We and our children will be required to be slaves, and I’m sure there will be many loopholes/exclusions for others, more than likely based on them descending from slavery, so they’ve already done their part.
Hopefully, he can do very little in the time he’s in office.

They have ‘forced volunteerism’ in Maryland and have for years. I have always wondered what part of ‘volunteerism’ is supposed to be ‘forced’ and why that lovely bunch at the ACLU do not find it unconstitutional??

Yes, and then they imported it to Colorado. 15 years ago they tried it out in my daughter’s high school and recruited kids who were at the top of their classes. They put the kids on this bizarre program that included building a “Portfolio” but didn’t include the standard Math, Science, and English lessons. Instead it included requirements like community service. AND the community service had to be in their “approved” programs, not just any 401c(3) organization.
When I found out about this program, I told them that I wanted my daughter taken out and put back into regular classes. They said that once the child started in this program they couldn’t go back. I was furious and I took her out of school for homeschooling until I could arrange a move to some other state. We moved to Allen, Texas where they had traditional education.
If that’s what Obama wants to do, more and more kids won’t be able to read but will still graduate with honors!
Can I assign my child’s 50 hours to help the Minuteman Project and American Border Patrol keep illegals out?
One more reason not to enroll our children in the pagan academies AKA socialist government schools.
