By MIKE ALLEN | 11/20/08 10:22 PM EST

Attorney General Michael Mukasey collapsed Thursday night while giving a speech to the Federalist Society in Washington, according to three senior administration officials.

Details about Mukasey’s condition were not immediately available.

Audience members said they began praying, fearing a stroke.

Mukasey is a former federal prosecutor from New York City who succeeded former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

At 10:30 p.m. Eastern, medical officials were still working on him on the stage, administration witnesses said.

Just saw video of it on Greta.

I don’t know enough about all things medical to give an opinion as to what could have happened. It looked like he was having trouble holding himself together while speaking, then his head went forward into the podium. The camera cut after that. I wonder if he has blood pressure or blood sugar problems. Could have been a stroke.

Shaking. Not good. Sounds like a seizure. Could be bad. Seizure in someone of his age with no history of any, could be real bad.

Anyone know if he’s diabetic? A Newsweek article reported he was ‘shaking’ just prior to collapsing.

Prayers it isn’t something deadly!

U.S. Attorney General Mukasey Collapses During Speech (Update2)

By Jeff Bliss
Enlarge Image/Details

Nov. 20 (Bloomberg) — U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey collapsed while giving a speech in Washington tonight and was taken away on a gurney by emergency personnel.

Mukasey, 67, slumped at the lectern and fell to the floor as he neared the end of a speech to the Federalist Society. Several people gathered around him to offer aid, and emergency workers arrived.

Members of the audience, including former Attorney General John Ashcroft, formed a human wall so people could not view the attorney general as he was taken away. A member of the audience offered a prayer for Mukasey from the lectern and told everyone to go home.

Mukasey, a retired federal judge from New York, became attorney general in November 2007, replacing Alberto Gonzales, who resigned after a congressional investigation into allegations he politicized the department.

In his speech, the attorney general defended the Bush administration’s anti-terrorism strategy against what he termed ``relentless criticism.’’

There’s a siren up on Drudge.

This is all we need. I think Mukasey has been a big improvement over Alberto Gonzalez, who was a disastrous appointment.

I pray for his health for our country’s sake as well as his. Things are bad enough.
