Minnesota Senate Recount Day 4: Work Continues in Some Counties (Coleman +115, 60% reporting)
St. Paul Tribune ^ | Last update: November 22, 2008 - 12:12 PM | By KEVIN DUCHSCHERE

The weekend isn't bringing any respite in the Minnesota Senate recount.

Ballots in the ultra-close race between Republican Norm Coleman and Democrat Al Franken are being counted in at least three counties today.

Fifty-three counties have reported complete results to the secretary of state, meaning fewer than three dozen remain. As of Friday night, at least 60 percent of the estimated 2.9 million ballots had gotten a second look.

Coleman entered the recount with a 215-vote edge over Franken. That lead has dropped to 115 votes when comparing totals in precincts where the new count is complete. But the figure doesn't include ballot challenges, which have caused vote tallies for both men to drop.

There have been 1,525 challenges between the campaigns, although some could be withdrawn before the Canvassing Board's Dec. 16 meeting.

In a high-ceilinged warehouse in northeast Minneapolis, the recount was carefully monitored by 52 volunteer observers for Coleman and 40 for Franken.

The work area was hushed, with little conversation as people focused on their work.

I agree. Dems think elections are held so they know how many votes they need to manufacture on “recount”

Ir ia “odd” that Coleman has never gained a single vote in the proceedings, it seems. Such is MN.

That isn't true. He has gained votes in some counties and lost in others. But he has lost more than he has gained.

Look at this table in the paper whose article is posted here. It is as of 6:44 pm this evening and shows Colemans lead up to 181 votes.

Actually, in some polling today/yesterday, Coleman netted positive votes, something like 40 for Franklen, 58 for Coleman.

I think Norm is going to hang on and well he should because I think some AF votes look dubious already.

Maybe as some have said, this goes to Court no matter what, but Norm won it!

Actually Coleman's lead was down to 115 and is now up to 181 so he gained 66 votes.

There's about one third of the votes yet to recount and close to 2,000 disputed votes.

The disputed votes could end up deciding this thing.

Today was a very good day for Coleman. Your bet is looking better than mine right now.

Coleman seems to be making many more challenges now, though. I suspect he’s trying to make sure that there’s never a point during the recount where he slips below Coleman.

Big psychological/political barrier to overcome if Franken goes up by even one vote at any point during the recount, so Coleman is smart to do this.

My new over/under is 110. You still taking the over?

If you look at the county totals, coleman gained in some, franken in others. The net has favored franken, but it’s just not true that Coleman never gained vis-a-vis franken. The state site and the newspapers have the county figures, and even a complete spreadsheet for every precinct.

Franken’s people are telling Mess-NBC that they have a different count and he was actually under 100 vote margin last night.

They're counting the lost, double-secret ballots cast by dead people, which were for Frankin by 150%.

I may not be as objective as I should be but what does it say about Al Franken that he is determined to win at all costs, even if it means that he has to cheat to win. If there is an erosion of values in America it can be found in this concept whether it be a sporting event, the elimination process on a reality show or a political contest. It begs the question: Are political scruples in the 21st century dead?

It’s back up to + 180 for Coleman after Saturday’s work. The remaining counties look good for Coleman. I think he will still be ahead after the recount. Then they will fight over rejected absentee ballots and after that court battles.
