Trends: North Carolina is the fifth-largest peanut grower in the U.S., yet peanut-allergy nazis have persuaded even officials in that state to crack down on PB&Js.
If they abide by the restriction, a certificate with their child's name will be placed on display at their school "in acknowledgment of the voluntary commitment to safety your family has made."
The district's also shaming parents into washing their kids' hands in the morning before they go on the bus, lest they transfer the dangerous peanut molecule and endanger a seat mate.
The move isn't isolated to North Carolina. It's a national trend. Other states have banned peanuts altogether from schools, while others have created peanut-free zones within schools.
A Washington lobbyist group is behind the anti-peanut push. It's stalking schools with fears about children going into anaphylactic shock if they so much as touch something peanutty.
"Just a small amount of food on your hands can get on desks, books, playground equipment," warns the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network.

I went to schools of 3000 kids in the ‘60s and ‘70s and never heard of a peanut allergy. I had my children in the ‘80s. Apparently, after that, it became a no-no for pregnant and breastfeeding women to eat peanuts or peanut butter. According to another article posted, kids get peanut allergies if they are not exposed to peanuts as infants.
No, I knew no one with peanut allergies. In fact, I knew no one who had any kind of “life threatening” allergies at all.
And I only knew one kid who had asthma.

PS: I did know a couple of kids who were allergic to dogs or cats. My own brother was very sensitive to poison ivy, but that’s all.

Never heard of this until a few years ago. PB&J was packed in most lunches of the kids in my 50’s-60’s school days.
Zero tolerance isn’t a bad concept. We should have zero tolerance for some things like pedophilia, rape or communism ;). The problem with zero tolerance in schools is that they usually adopt it in response to something silly and then take it to ludicrous lengths so that a picture of a pirate with a sword becomes a weapon violation.
You asked about nut allergies back in earlier days. I grew up in the 60’s, and my older brother had a violent allergy to black walnuts, of all things. (My grandparents had a black walnut tree, else I suppose he would never have been exposed to them at all.) But I do not remember any of my schoolmates having peanut allergies.
I just read about the recent Israeli study that seems to indicate that kids who are not exposed to peanuts earlier actually have higher rates of allergies to them. I had been holding off on giving my twin toddlers peanut butter ... but that study decided me, and they’ve been eating it ever since (a couple of weeks now). No anaphylactic shock so far! :)
Malnutrition is running rampant in the U.S. When they start injecting flavors into supposedly fresh fruits and vegetables sold in our ‘stupormarkets’ to disguise how tasteless they are anymore, eyebrows everywhere should raise. Throw the fruit back, like they did to King Henry VIII. Apparently, peanuts are the only thing they can't inject something into and are far more healthy. Why else would they really want to ban them?
I was in public school from ‘52 to ‘64 and PB&J sandwiches were a staple. I never heard of an allergy to peanuts until the late ‘80s.
I don’t remember bodies stacking up in the school cafeteria when I took peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to school every day.
Probably one of those suppressed memories.
Question: what’s the percentage of people who do have peanut allergies?
I was in grade school back in the sixties and never heard of peanut butter allergies. Who didn’t eat PB&J sandwiches then?
CHOICE is a HELL of a lot more DEADLY than peanuts; but you don't hear the 'schools' trying to OUTLAW that; do you!!
They all dropped dead and it was blamed on...?

You are correct, of course, when you acknowledge that the two words can have merit when used literally. We seem to agree when the two words are used to refer to a certain doctrine used in schools, the doctrine often produces absurd results.
I predict those results when the “doctrine” rather than the two words is used anywhere.
We probably agree as well that Zero Tolerance mind-numbingly recognizes only the self-serving aspects of a factual setting, Many of us at an early age experienced Zero Tolerance when our over-worked mother did not have time to sort out the issues (“just do it”, “because I said so”, etc.).. But that was in the security of our own homes and with a mother who we knew loved us. The State provides neither security or love.
