Skip to comments.Rendell's sexist gaffe (about Janet Napolitano)

Ed Rendell was the MC for the governor's meeting in Philly yesterday, where there was much to be heard on the open mics. CNN zeroed-in its microphones on Pa's motor-mouthed governor and heard him saying this about Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, Obama's pick for Homeland Security chief:
"Janet's perfect for that job. Because for that job, you have to have no life. Janet has no family. Perfect. She can devote, literally, 19-20 hours a day to it."
CNN's Campbell Brown went off on the guv last night:
Wow. Now, I'm sure Gov. Napolitano has many qualifications for the job beyond having no family, and therefore the ability to devote 20 hours a day to the job.
But it is fascinating to me that that is the quality being highlighted here as so perfect. C'mon. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff is married with two grown children. His predecessor, Tom Ridge, had a family. Anybody remember a debate about whether they would have trouble balancing the demands of work and family?

Rendell is right.
The demands of the job almost dictate that one not have a family and devote much of their time to it.
I think that Campbell Brown and others are upset at what they perceive as a slight swipe take at Napolitano’s questionable sexual identitry.
Sounds like Cammy Brown has a bit ‘o PMS.
But, like Rosie and Hillary, Janet has a lot of girl friends.
Ed Rendell is Pauly Walnuts, without the finishing, grace or tact...
“I think that Campbell Brown and others are upset at what they perceive as a slight swipe take at Napolitanos questionable sexual identitry.”
And she chose to defend her because she is gay or because she supports abortion?
“And she chose to defend her because she is gay or because she supports abortion?”
Ms. Brown understands that questioning Napolitano’s sexuality, however obliquely, perpetuates the notion that such a concept as sexual immorality exists, and that, perhaps, her own actions might fall into that category.
So, once again and unsurprisingly for the libs, it’s just self-interest.
Heh! I’d love to hear what Motormouth Rendell has to say about her behind closed doors.
He is so uncouth.
That twit needs a dictionary.
I don’t see how that’s sexist. Rude definitely, but sexist is pushing it.
Color me confused.
Wasn’t Campbell Brown one of the earliest to jump on Gov. Palin’s ability to balance running/serving for VP with her family’s needs?
Eddie nails Butch.
I’d love to hear Rendell speak to people in private.
Eddie’s a funny guy. A prick, yeah, but a funny guy who speaks a little too honestly for the rodents. He’s the guy who probably just sits back there and shakes his head at the rodent successes thinking, “I can’t believe these people buy our bull$hit.” Me, neither.
I guess the reporter cut Ed off before he could mention Janet Reno, Donna Shalala, Barbara Mikulski, Billie Jean King or Martina Navratilova.
Is there some requirement that every democrat administration has at least one dog ugly women of questionable sexual orientation in a cabinet post? We had Janet Reno in the Clinton years and now this women. Every time I see Napolitano I think about the theme from that old 1970's sitcom "Maude", except Maude, although a liberal, was slightly better looking and straight.
