Teenager banned from wearing Christian chastity ring at school
Daily Mail ^ | 04th December 2008 | Luke Salkeld

Posted on 12/05/2008 1:29:35 PM PST by forkinsocket

The item of jewellery owned by Kioni Lansbury represents her intention to stay a virgin until she marries. But her school has deemed it potentially dangerous and against uniform rules.

Kioni, who is a regular church-goer, was inspired to wear the ring by the American pop group the Jonas Brothers, who have all made pledges of celibacy. Purity rings are popular in America where organisers have persuaded a vast number of teenagers to abstain from sex. Kioni, of Ottery St Mary in Devon, said: 'Lots of girls sleep around. I want to keep myself pure.

'Many of my friends want to get one. If people can wear head scarves, why can't I wear a ring?' Kioni, who will turn 13 later this month, added: 'The ideas behind the purity ring are something I believe in. I believe in Jesus and a lot of his teachings. 'If you wait you know you're with someone who loves you.' She added that she would continue to wear the ring at school but remove it when appropriate. 'I will take it off if I think it's dangerous but I'm going to carry on wearing it. 'I came across the whole purity ring thing after getting into the Jonas Brothers. I loved the music but then discovered what they stood for and it went from there.' Kioni was given the purity ring by her mother Sandra Holden last month. The 42-year-old said: 'I think she should be able to wear it. It is no different to religious symbols. She wants to save herself for when she's older and doesn't want to waste her innocence. She feels very strongly about this.'

we weren't allowed to wear jewelry of any type, even watches, during PE or science lab (like chemistry or physics)

Psst! You kin take it off for those occasions. That's why the bureaucrat who talked about the reason being the hazard is lying.

I'll bet headscarves are a bear if you catch them in a belt sander, too. That's why God invented common sense.

When I was in elementary school, at least half the girls wore pendants (especially First Communion presents), bracelets, and the occasional ring. Dangerous my ***!

Obviously, Old Glory is not appropros but it would seem to me that the British have some avenue for this young lady to express her points of view also.

Scanned a bit too fast not to notice that this was an article from UK. Too much coffee, I guess.

The ring should be banned for this reason alone.

I’ll just note Britney Spears did the same thing and leave it at that.

Socialists make my head want to explode. Its okay to teach kids that homosexuality is a good thing, that abortion is a choice, that Islamfacsist are not out to destroy civilization, but let a child show any Christian faith and that child is immediately attacked.
The ring was deemed potentially dangerous??? What is dangerous is allowing these idiots to be in charge of educating children.

Why not just say no at the appropriate time and leave it at a personal level instead of wearing something publicly that one knows will cause controversy?

Then they don't get the look at me I'm special attention.

How would they even notice a ring among all the tattoos and piercings these days?

The point is that there is no reason for this to be controversial. It’s just a stupid ring! Why she wants to wear it is nobodys business.

Street shoes are dangerous in PE, that’s why they take them off. Bogus discrimination excuse. The ring is a constant physical reminder of her intent - seems like an extreme waste of administrator’s time to get into micromanaging every PC artifact visible.

Okay, why should people that get married wear a wedding ring? Just tell people your married if they ask.
Why wear a Cross if you are a Christian. Why wear a Star of David of you are a Jew? And on and on.....

...her school has deemed it potentially dangerous...
____________
I realize this is a serious topic, but I lol at this line. They have deemed a ring (inanimate object) dangerous, but have had numerous attacks from Muslim extremists, whom they deliberately refuse to call dangerous.

Is there something in the water supply in Britain, causing them all to be a bit mushy between the ears.

I think she’s trying to communicate a concept. One can do that silently, but one can’t do it imperceptibly.

I don't know why liberals think abstinence until marriage is "dangerous."

Dangerous to the coffers of Planned Parenthood and dangerous to the liberal doctrine of no moral absolutes.

Thanks, that makes sense. She--- and her married teachers --- should take their chastity or wedding rings off during PE, sports, and science lab. Also pierced ear studs and medical ID bands.

Let's not forget the head scarves. Just think of poor Isadora Duncan.

Gays can wear rainbow this and that. Have parades with no inhibitions. Have gay clubs at schools. Or have gay awareness days. All being the more provocative the better.

Meanwhile something very unassuming stirs controversy.

In today's world I think she demonstrates courage by wearing such a ring and standing up for what's right. The ring serves as a reminder to her and others of her pledge. Since honor is no longer tolerated, many do not want to be reminded that there is such a thing.
