The Jesuits Produce A Great Political Candidate

by Deal W. Hudson

11/19/08

Joseph Cao is a Catholic lawyer and former Jesuit scholastic from New Orleans. He is running as a Republican for the Congressional 2nd district seat in Louisiana presently held by Rep. William Jefferson (D-LA), who is best known for the $90,000 found in his freezer. The election will be held December 6. Few candidates for public office are as forthright as Cao when asked about their position on abortion. “I am very anti-abortion,” he told me without hesitation. Cao would like to overturn Roe, but in the meantime, “We have to find a way to defeat Roe without having to overturn it.”

His solid pro-life credentials are attested to by the endorsement of the FRC Action PAC, among others. At age 41, Cao has been married for seven years to Hieu, also called “Kate,” and has two children, Sophia 5 and Betsy 4. Kate is a pharmacist who works to “pay the bills while I play politician,” Joseph told me. They met at a Marian festival at Our Lady La Vang Parish, a Vietnamese Catholic congregation in New Orleans. Cao was born in Vietnam but immigrated to the United States at age 8 with his older sister and younger brother. The Communists had jailed his father after the fall of Saigon in 1975, and Joseph was raised by an uncle in Houston where he attended middle and high school and was eventually reunited with his parents. Joseph attended Baylor University in pre-med, where he met a Catholic chaplain who introduced him to the Society of Jesus.

Possibly another peak at the future of the Republican party.

Shouldn’t the title be:

“Despite the Jesuits, A Great Political Candidate is Produced”

;-)

I’m getting JUG for that one for sure!

I wouldn’t give the Jesuits any credit for “producing” a pro-life EX-Jesuit scholastic!!! I think it’s far more likely that he came to see that the Jesuits is no place for a Catholic.

My father was the graduate of a Jesuit law school. They turned that son of a California rancher into a world-class educated man.

Partial atonement for Jerry Brown? (Brown is also a Jesuit ex-seminarian, I think.)

I spent my share of time there. In fact, I knew the assignments there would be “subtract 3 from 3,000” until you got to zero. I used to just do them in classes to have them ready. After a while they got wise to it and would make it “6 from 6,000” just to screw me up!

New Orleans has a 2/3 black majority. My guess is that he loses to the next black Democrat nominated in 2010.

Hah! I think he probably had a good upbrining in Houston. The Vietnamese community here is very interesting. The bulk of them are refugees from the southern part of Vietnam. They can smell communism a mile off. It's immigrants like these that will keep the country fresh.

I'm a student at Univ of St Thomas in Houston. The Dominicans have an order of nuns down here and the majority of them are Vietnamese. Some of the nuns attend classes here and they seem to be a very solid bunch. It's funny--you see a bunch of white-habited nuns with their rosaries swinging all the way to the ground, and then notice that they are all Asians! A great group of sisters, and very bright from my experiences in class. Also very faithful and orthodox. Their "up close and personal" experience with communism has left them totally immune to junk like liberation theology. They are terrific allies in the culture wars.

He should have continued his work in the Jesuits as a Catholic missionary. To the Jesuits.

If only we could have ten refugees from Communism for every illiterate, benighted socialist wannabe drone proletarian from Mexico, El Salvador, and Guatemala.

Some Jesuits are great. In fact, any Jesuit who is a Catholic faces such persecution that any such Jesuit has to be at least courageous, if not really holy.

But I don’t see or hear of any evidence that the Society is really reforming. It’s a top-down organization, and the ambitious and faithless seized control from the top down long ago.

It’s a dying outfit, with a few Catholics in it, faithfully riding the ship down to the sea floor.
