LiteBrite? Now that you mention it...

The picture to me looks like that of the generic “dude” you see around. A lot like some folks I know too but they are all older and greying up like me.

It'll be interesting to find out (hopefully later today) just who this guy is and his background. Possibly an ELFist though I doubt - not their usual sort of target or MO. Perhaps a Middle Eastern name (with no known connection to jihad of course) or a homegrown boy who owns a gun and belongs to a club with others who own guns (an unnamed right wing white separatist militia).

RE: Russian Crime in Oregon.

I know a policeman who worked in Estacada, a mountain community about 1 hour from Portland in the Cascades, near Mt. Hood. He loved his job for years, but eventually quit as he said it was too dangerous investigating out in the boonies, parks and campgrounds. There is apparently a lot of illegal dope growing and meth manufacture and he said if he came upon Russians they would simply kill and bury him out there.

He transferred back into the city for safety. Weird, eh?

The Klinton administration tried to paint the whole militant / white separatist / Timothy McVeigh sympathizer face on Oregon conservative groups back when, but it didn't stick.

Here, where such groups exist, they generally focus on staying away from government, survival without a government, and sometimes do community service that relates to their inventory of skills & equipment. They don't advocate overthrow of government, but rather envision a collapse from other causes, and just bide their time and prepare. Grudgingly voted McCain.

The “old hippies” are of two stripes - one being the very establishment they once disdained, with little actual hippie remaining except when they put on their costumes to go to Renaissance Faire. Voted Obama. The others, rural dwellers, one time societal dropouts mellowed by age and integrated into their communities, and often associate with the survivalists. Voted Libertarian.

The younger “tie dye” crowd is mostly 420 dopers, young and old, who don't care much about anything. May have voted for Obama but more likely didn't vote at all.

The ELFers are the most militant subculture in Oregon, who hate the idea of making a profit from resource extraction or land development, and make their efforts known through spectacular acts of violent property destruction, often by fire. Voted Green.

The anarchists have localized tantrums in the city center, throwing rocks and breaking windows, terrorizing random motorists by jumping upon and smashing their cars. They want some unknown form of communist dictatorship that will force the rich to give them free money and housing. Just how anarchy will accomplish that remains a mystery. Voted Green, if at all.

I can believe it. Russians are actually a big problem in cities, too, such as New York, where there is a huge criminal class of Russians. They generally don’t dare attack the police directly, though.

Many of them are illegals, but some of them have been here for some time and were brought here as “refugees” by well-meaning groups that even supported them financially. Some thanks!

Yes, a large group of Russian Orthodox outside Woodburn. They come down to the WalMart in Salem to shop. Don’t know exactly where they are.

“I’m sure the poor folk in Oregon don’t have a death penalty...”

We have the death penalty in Oregon but our Judges have no spines. The last time it was used was many moons ago. I think they hung the guy.

There isn’t much available about what let Police to connect this guy, but they sure sound confident that they have the right guy.

We may hear more details about this arrest at the arraignment tomorrow...

Hung huh? They did that in Washington until a couple years ago when a fat dude sued calling it cruel and unusual punishment, because his excess weight would likely take his head off. I'm not sure myself how much more dead that would have made him.

We have had, I think, two or three executions since reinstating capital punishment by popular vote back in the ‘80s. In that act, the gas chamber (or maybe the electric chair I'm not sure) was replaced with lethal injection. A sequence I believe, a sedative, a paralytic, then a massive barbiturate dose. Or maybe just two steps I'm not sure. Whatever it is kills ‘em anyway.

In my old age I have come to believe it's not such a good idea any way it's done, because it has become clear enough through the benefit of new forensics techniques that there are people about on death row who didn't do it. I'm not militant about it to the extent I'd engage in a big argument over it - this state does it and so be it - but it is a complex and expensive process that has a small chance of putting one who is not guilty (I did not say innocent) to death.

Yeah - I was figuring last night since they knew so much so fast that someone had turned him in, but they say the identification did not come from a citizen tip. Perhaps identified through the cell phone. There are plenty of opportunities to make mistakes in the whole process of creating such a crime.

Nice post to me "Dave in Eugene of all places." You seem to have the socio-economic side down. I've been to a nice old commune) yep right out there near grants Pass...(an plethora of differing politics but they're a group of once '66 and '67 ex vets, and dopers, who now keep up the commune about the same way.

I've met a lot of survivalists but few militias in Oregon ..of course I don't hang out with militias and as much as I've "heard" of this or that militia...see folks walking around in BDU's who are clearly NOT reg Military thenr they're either wanna be's. once were's, maybe duck hunters/ hunter in general...militias(??) or anarchists leaders( oxymoron on that one). To me oregon..and latitudes farther North will have it's extreme left and right...I like the real old hippies, the smart educated folks that know bee keeping, even rustle cattle and do their best to "keep life "organic....but on the same vein I love the old ranchers, farmers and such who have been around for years

To me now, after reading your post I am wondering if the bomber may have been a solo guy that may have infested and lost everything...or hold a personalgrudge....no profiler me, but it seems weird to send a bomb to a bank.

As someone wrote( or more now) ..we'll soon find out..sadly.

The old hippies, the rural type are OK by me as well. More likely to be driving an old F-250 than a Prius, and understand they are a part of the necessarily diverse society, and not the superior model to which everyone else should conform. I run into them from all over, in all kinds of places.

My long gone dad lived that lifestyle before it was a hippie culture. Born in 1912 and in the Navy a Pearl Harbor survivor (a Quaker, he served as a carpenter/fitter), after the war moved from midwest and bought a small farm in Oregon up the McKenzie from Eugene. Built his own gravity powered water system, combination of propane and DC generator lighting, wood & propane heat and cooking, propane refrigeration. Even put a gas engine on a clothes washer. Built greenhouses of his own design for year round growing, raised hogs & chickens. Shot deer with an ancient Stevens .22 which I still have. Was in the process of designing a water exchanger heat pump to extract heat from the ground when the family started growing & he sold the farm for bigger digs closer to the main road (but still raised hogs & added goats and all scaled up beyond subsistence), but from 1946-1959 lived that off the grid dream. If not for going from one kid to adding a set of twins (one was me) perhaps would have stayed on the old farm.

I was always a rural or semi-rural dweller until adulthood and have been in the city limits of Eugene or Springfield since 1979. I hope to be moving closer to nature very soon.
