Is Israel a Sovereign Nation? Do Its Borders Matter? That is the Question.

What is this war with Hamas really about?

Either Israel has territorial integrity or it doesn't. Either Israel's borders mean something or they dont. Either Israel is as a sovereign country, an equal among all other sovereign countries, or it's not.

That is what's at stake.

If Israel prematurely ends this war in a way that allows Hamas to continue lobbing bombs across Israel's borders at Israeli civilians with abandon, then Israel's borders mean absolutely nothing and Israel will be permanently diminished as something less than a sovereign country and more like some kind of parcel, protectorate or colony to be divided up according to the whims of outsiders, many of whom hate her.

The actions of Hamas and the many Palestinians that support and voted it into government are not terrorist acts but acts of war. If Israel wants to secure its recognition as a country, it better fight this as a war until the war is won.

Great commentary, Quesney.

This is what is comes down to. It would be any nation’s perogative, why not Israel’s.

Anything less gives them Quasi-Nation status.

Absolutely correct.

your comments seem predicated on the understand that Israel is a nation. The word 'nation' being defined as:

a large body of people, associated with a particular territory, that is sufficiently conscious of its unity to seek or to possess a government peculiarly its own

Whereas to a good deal of the world -- for countless reasons -- Israel is not so much a nation as it is an intrusion brought about by the Balfour Commission* around the end of WWI. IMHO this current battle is merely the latest chapter in the 3,000+ year old tribal war.

*Which, propelled by the League of Nations, sought to establish a Jewish/Zionist homeland in an vague, nebulous area of the Middle East known as 'Palestine')

What is this war with Hamas really about? .... it is what it always has been about... the same reason the Land for Peace won’t work.... Israel’s enemies don’t want land per se .. of course they ( Hamas .. Palestinians ) will take land that is not theirs or freely given to then.... it has been all about the destruction of the nation of Israel and the Jews.

“Hamas is increasingly desperate for a ceasefire. Its top leaders are being killed. Scores of its best trained fighters are being killed. Its arms depots and government buildings are being bombed to smithereens. So are its vital smuggling tunnels along the Egyptian border.

Reports the Jerusalem Post: “Palestinian journalists in the Gaza Strip said on Monday that the general feeling was that Hamas does not exist any longer as a governing body. ‘All their government institutions have been destroyed,’ said a Gaza City reporter. ‘The Hamas leaders are now behaving like al-Qaida’s Osama bin Laden and [his deputy] Ayman Zawahiri. Their only public appearances are through recorded messages aired on Arab TV stations.’”

Preciously for this reason, now is no time to let up on Hamas. Israel should absolutely refuse to agree to the Mubarak-Sarkozy plan.”

To the left, neither Israel’s borders, or those of the US mean very much.
