Hope and Change: Move to repeal presidential term limits started
Hot Air ^ | Jan. 13, 2009 | Ed Morrissey

Maybe I'm just being too cynical, but somehow I doubt that Rep. Jose Serrano introduced HJ Res 5 in order to allow George W Bush to run for a third term in office. One week ago, the New York Democrat introduced a measure to repeal the 22nd Amendment, which provides the only term limit on federal office - the Presidency. The amendment, added in 1951, restricts anyone from seeking a third term in office, and Serrano wants that repealed.

Why now? Apparently, the notion of Hope and Change has overwhelmed Serrano to the point that he just can't stand to see Barack Obama limited to two terms in office. Never mind the fact that Obama has yet to start his first term, and no one knows yet whether he’d get re-elected in 2012. Maybe it's that New Deal vibe; Serrano may want to prepare the way for a more tangible comparison between Obama and FDR in 2016 and 2020.

Notice the parrallel with Chavez?

Venezuela’s Chavez Eyes Feb 15 For Referendum On Term Limits

http://www.easybourse.com/bourse-actualite/marches/venezuela-s-chavez-eyes-feb-15-for-referendum-on-term-limits-586579

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has penciled in Feb. 15 as the date for a referendum that, if passed, would give him a license to run for re-election indefinitely.

The leftist leader, a fierce critic of the U.S. for much of the decade he has already spent in power, predicted in his weekly television broadcast on Sunday that half the country’s 17 million registered voters would back him.

Mary A. O’Grady : Dictatorship for Dummies

http://www.petroleumworld.com/Ed09011301.htm

“Certainly “elections” can’t be expected to matter much. Mr. Chávez now controls the entire electoral process, from voter rolls to tallying totals after the polls have closed. Under enormous public pressure he accepted defeat in his 2007 bid for constitutional reforms designed to make him president for life. But so what? That loss allowed him to maintain the guise of democracy, and now he has decided that there will be another referendum on the same question in February. Presumably Venezuela will repeat this exercise until the right answer is produced. “

one 6 year term for the u.s. presidency would be more than enough, and add some sanity to u.s. politics.

one 6 year u.s. senatorial term, same.

and 3 2-year u.s. congressional terms, same.

It was the hopeful audacity for hopeful changiness. Change that would audaciously create hope to look away from the politics of the past to look ahead to the hope of change and the hope that only change can audaciously bring.

I hate to say this, because it would be a mortal sin, but I believe if this happened, some one would take matters in his, or her, own hands.

Shall we just short circuit this whole slide into tinpot dictatorship and show up at the re-education camps day after inauguration???

... That would surely reduce the anxiety and sadness of the slow loss of freedoms.

I don’t think anyone will even be upset - remember the frog in the pot? When the heat i9s being turned up gradually, he doesn’t notice he is being cooked, until he is completely done.

I think we are halfway cooked already and have no strength to even jump out of the pot, much less do anything else.

Obama may not make it past 4 months.

Anybody who has seen my postings on FR will remember that I have harped on the same theme for the last two months. Many of you thought I was overstating Obama’s desire for a permanent Presidency; complacency set in to thinking that you could remove Obama in 2016. Please, please wake up America. Obama plans to stay President until he dies and that won’t be for at least 30 years given the normal life span of males in America. If you had asked Cubans in 1959 what odds would they have taken that Castro or his brother would still be ruling Cuba in 50 years they would have taken any odds.

As the Obama presidency nears the feeling of forboding in my gut gets stronger and stronger. I ran into a place online where you can watch the movie 1984, for free. There is a piece where there a woman is broadcasting changes in production, and at the end, because things are improving, she announces that the chocolate rations. UGH, I so feel like this is where we are going. The whole feel of that movie freaked me out.

I got an email from the Obama team. I don’t know why I get it. I certainly never signed up for anything from them. I did go to that change.gov website once but I never signed up or in or anything and I think they stole my address. Anyway it is interesting to see how they work things. Obama makes a proposal, his people put it online in vague flowery terms. They change the meaning of words if necessary....ie infrastructure is now investment. They they have their people comment on the proposals. Just one or two to begin with, then as soon as a real person comments they will set them straight real quick if they are not marching in step and so on and so on and before you know it everyone is marching in lock step chanting change change change.

I agree. There should be term limits for congress. We have term limits for president, governors and mayors. Why not term limits for Congress.... 12 years should be the limit. What is the reason we don’t have term limits, except that congress are the ones that probably have to introduce the legislation.
