Rangel to reintroduce military draft measure

Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) likely will introduce his controversial legislation to reinstate the draft again this year, but he will wait until after the economic stimulus package is passed.

Asked if he plans to introduce the legislation again in 2009, Rangel last week said, “Probably … yes. I don’t want to do anything this early to distract from the issue of the economic stimulus.”

Rangel’s military draft bill did create a distraction for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) soon after Democrats won control of Congress after the 2006 election.

In the wake of that historic victory, Pelosi said publicly that she did not support the draft and that the Democratic leadership would not back Rangel’s legislation. She also said Rangel’s legislation was not about reinstating the draft but was instead “a way to make a point” about social inequality.

Reintroducing the military draft bill, which would attract media attention, will be trickier for Rangel in 2009 than it was a couple years ago because the Ways and Means Committee chairman is now under investigation by the House ethics committee.

...Son I’ve already served.....and saw first hand how unfairly things were in 1967-70 when the so called “best and brightest” were allowed to dodge the draft with student deferrments.....think: Bill Clinton

I undertand your position from a fairness standpoint, but I really hate what’s happened with women getting killed and maimed in the service....it’s a shameful reflection on American manhood.

I agree. I think it should be back to the old system of WACS and WAVES. But this is what 30 years of the "womens" movement has come to. They should have minded the phrase " Be careful what you wish for ".

Yes, but it will sure serve to take the attention off his legal (illegal?) problems. He thinks just like Bubba—remember bombing an aspirin factory, and Kosovo taking our eyes off Monica?

...this has been a great discussion but I’ve got to go to bed now...don’t be too quick to diss Rangel on this issue...most times he’s wrong, but on this one he’s got a good point....and you younger guys....if there’s a draft you’ll be proud to serve your country...hell, I would do it all over again if I could.

I have too, voluntarily. Yes, that was a shitty time but remember who was in charge. If you don’t think that would be the case again then you are terribly naive, with all due respect.

....yes I do....it’s better for the country, and the Army for all classes of society share in the sacrifice....and make no mistake, what’s coming will be known as The Long War.

Stalin would agree with you. No doubt he'd give you a big sloppy kiss.

Even at the height of the Viet Nam War the military only needed one third of each year class. So what to do with the other two thirds?

Oh, I know. Slave labor. Plus mass indoctrination to transform them into the New Socialist Man.

Your bright idea means the end of the Republic. Although I concede it's not looking too healthy right now any way. So let's just make sure it can't possibly survive.

The draft will give another tool to use in refusing to fight for the nations security and to honor our commitments. They will claim, and have the public backing behind them, that the draft will mean a disproportionate number of the poor and minorities will have to serve.

The public never got behind the cut and run libs regarding Iraq like they did in Vietnam because everyone serving in Iraq was a volunteer.

"The military is against this for good reason."

A weakened and undisciplined military is precisely what the libs want. The expected move to end "don't ask, don't tell" is also being done to erode morale and curtail both voluntary enlistment as well as re enlistment.

“...you might be typing in Japanese or German tonight had my father’s generation felt that way....in WWII there were 7 draft registrations including one for men 45-64 years of age.”

Maybe so, but I think that Americans didn’t need a draft to go fight the Japanese. And Vietnam... we didn’t need a draft because we didn’t need to be there.

They will love it. They will get a sign up bonus towards college and then be granted exemptions and the same bonus if they instead choose to join the community organizing cadres. Those *forces* will be the chief organizers of anti-war demonstrations.

These evil traitors are not stupid. They have mastered the Kabuki dance and incrementalism. Just watch. Rangel is no longer operating in a vacuum and depending on the GOP/POTUS to defeat/veto a draft.

“....draft young people into community organizing as a requirement for high school graduation.”

barry has said that all will sacrifice, all will serve; be it domestic security, military, or community service. sadly i think he and rohm mean what they say in this case.
