No doubt Hart Marx will be lobbying for “O” to outlaw business casual dress on Monday’s, Tuesday’s, Wednesday’s, Thursday’s, & Friday’s... do it “O,” we need to sell more suits.

Well, actually (it’s not an Obama suit) it is a suit from “Hickey Freeman” which is one of the best made in America. I wouldn’t mind having one! Just because Al Gore acquired five for his 2000 campaign, does cheapen the suit either! I have a friend with impeccable character, who acquired a Hickey Freeman suit. The secret is knowing when to purchase their $5,000 suit for $200 (no typo)! :) And with this news, I’ll be looking for clearance sales. :)

Oh give me a break! You obviously have not bought a suit in the last 50 years. They are (were?) one of the premier suit manufacturers in the US.

Couple the casualization of the workplace, and the rise in avaialbility of cheap foreign labor markets, and you have the demise of a once great company, that provided unskilled labor jobs to a host of non-college educated workers in the US. Unlike Levi's, they tried to keep many US plants open, and it has helped lead to their demise.

Give me a break! Hart, Schaffner & Marx had been one of the premier off-the-rack suit makers in the United States, along with companies like Southwick and Hickey-Freeman. My late tailor did the hand-stitching on the lapels and linings of the high-end suits. Until the late Eighties, every Hart, Schaffner & Marx suit was made in Chicago, Illinois.

The more custom line, Oxxford, was worn by guys like Cary Grant and George H. W. Bush.

My tailor worked for Hart, Schaffner, Marx, which eventually became Hartmarx, for over 40 years until arthritis got to him. I had the opportunity to visit their workshop with him a few years after he retired and it was amazing to see the level of craftsmanship and pride there.

I remember Jack Nicklaus was their big celebrity spokesperson back in the 70’s and 80’s. I think they still had a Nicklaus line of suits and clothing.

I had two Hart, Schaffner & Marx suits back when I wore suits to work. Awesome quality. Eventually I went the Hong Kong route. Today I have two blazers, one suit, and one tuxedo in the closet. None of them have seen the light of day in some time.

My father was a banker in Chicago during the 70-80’s. H,S
&M is where he (and most all the other businessmen) got their suits done...
