Mother of Octuplets Has 6 Other Children

WHITTIER, California , Calif. — The woman who gave birth to octuplets this week has six other children and never expected to have eight more when she took fertility treatment, her mother said.

Angela Suleman said her daughter expects a big challenge raising 14 children. The good news, she said, is all the babies appear healthy.

"I looked at those babies. They are so tiny and so beautiful," Suleman told The Los Angeles Times on Thursday.

Suleman's daughter gave birth to the octuplets Monday at a hospital in Bellflower but has requested that doctors keep her name confidential. Media knew little about the woman until a family acquaintance told CBS' "The Early Show" on Thursday that the mother is "fairly young" and lives with her parents and her six children, including twins.

Did your co worker have six children under the age of 7 at home?

Just asking?

No. But that’s also none of the doctor’s business. We might not agree with what she did, but providing fertility treatment to a woman who already has several kids is no grounds for taking away the doctor’s license.

“Suleman sought fertility treatment and was implanted with numerous embryos last year and according to the mother, they all happened to take.”

WTF?! Implanted with numerous embryos?

It is a bit weird. However, the article said that her father said they have a big house somewhere. If they are going to take care of all these kids, good luck to them. If we find out they’re on the government dime..we must use them as an example of a broken system.

Here it is:
The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the woman’s partner will be returning to his job as a contract worker in Iraq in order to help support Suleman and her expanded family. The couple’s marital status is unclear.

Suleman sought fertility treatment and was implanted with numerous embryos last year and according to the mother, they all happened to take. Throughout the pregnancy, doctors thought there were seven babies. The surprise eighth baby shocked the massive delivery team that was assembled at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Bellflower, California.

If you had six kids and were pregnant with another litter, you'd probably live with your parents too. I'm sorry for the crudeness of that, but it's the most appropriate word.

Six children under the age of seven is not ‘several’ kids.

Doesn’t change the fact that it’s none of the doctor’s business.

WTF?! Implanted with numerous embryos?

It's quite common for them to transfer (not implant) multiple embryos because the chances of them all implanting successfully are slim. Even with all the advancements with IVF, there is still a high failure rate.

And as I pointed out in an earlier post it is quite possible they didn't even transfer 8 embyros. They may have transferred fewer but ones they did transfer may have split into twins. We just don't know enough about the story yet.

Apparently, they had to assemble a team of 45 doctors and nurses to assist in the birth. I am wondering how many new mothers at the same hospital didn’t receive optimal care because this selfish woman decided to have another eight.

All I can think of is that old Andrew Dice Clay “pome”:

There was an old lady
Who lived in a shoe
She had so many kids
Her uterus fell out...OH!

Are you an expert on IVF?

http://www.ivf-infertility.com/infertility/infertility5.php

As one who has gone through the process, both terms, implant and transfer, are proper, while implanting “multiple embryos” is not.

Most reputable IVF programs adhere to guide lines limiting embryo transfers. Embryos do split but the chances are rare.

Personally, this is a case where I’d be happy at calling child protective services.

An expert's opinion:

Octuplets’ Family Filed For Bankruptcy

EXCERPT

On The Early Show Friday, the scientific director of an Atlanta-area fertility clinic blasted whichever clinic did the implantations, saying he's “stunned.”

From your link:

“Not all embryos implant and not all implanted embryos will further develop to fetuses, and not all fetuses end in healthy babies.”

People may use the term implant, but it’s used incorrectly. The doctor transfers the embryo. It’s basically a crap shoot if they are going to implant.

i think that there is a distinction between “judgement” and “criticism”. in my opinion the line is blurred and those who don’t like to be criticized use the “you can not judge me” argument for the defense of their behavior.
