What A Dope: Michael Phelps caught with cannabis pipe
News of the World ^ | 1/02/2009 | Georgina Dickinson

THIS is the astonishing picture which could destroy the career of the greatest competitor in Olympic history.

In our exclusive photo Michael Phelps, who won a record EIGHT gold medals for swimming at the Beijing games last summer, draws from a bong.

The glass pipes are generally used to smoke cannabis.

And after sporting chiefs announced laws which mean four-year bans for drug-taking, Phelps’ dreams of adding to his overall 14 gold medal tally at the 2012 games in London could already be OVER.

GOLDEN BOY: Phelps at Beijing Those dreams seemed the last thing on his mind when he puffed from the bong during two days of partying with students last November, a quiet time in the swimming calendar when athletes would not expect to get tested for drugs.

One party-goer who witnessed the star’s behaviour told the News of the World: “He was out of control from the moment he got there.

“If he continues to party like that I’d be amazed if he ever won any more medals again.”

Phelps’ aides went into a panic over our story and offered us a raft of extraordinary incentives not to run the bong picture.

Further than winning 8 Olympic Gold Medals this past Olympics?

I don’t smoke pot but seriously it’s not like he’s been caught doing any performance enhancing drugs.

Relax! this is not WWIII if Phelps smokes marijuana, even if it would be him in the picture and it is questionable behavior for a role model for youth.

This is a conservative forum but there IS room for discussion of marijuanna laws, and differences of opinions about use by adults,.etc.

Go ahead now and offer a brilliant reply about my screen name.

I think he will probably end up hosing his image which will hurt him down the road for endorsements, etc.

However, I just can't get too wound up over the guy toking up or chasing slutty chicks. Doesn't sound too bad to me!

So, conservatives don’t/can’t smoke weed? Guess that memo never made its way to me.

Anyway, a college-age kid is blowing bong hits. Stop the presses.

As a Marylander I can only say that my wife and I saw this coming.

He’s a super athlete, but if you’ve ever seen him interviewed, the kid is a dolt. There’s not alot upstairs. Notice on all of his enorsements that he rarely even says one sentence in the commercial. (There’s a reason for that)

My first tip off was when I saw him at Ravens games wearing his hat like a Baltimore street thug gang banger. That was not what I wanted my 12yr old son seeing and I advised him at that point to not look up to this Olympic “hero”.

I’m not in need of relaxation. I’M NOT! LOL

All I’m saying is, give peace a chan...oh, wrong room.

Really, I don’t give a shoot if he hits a bong, that’s his business.

That he stood on a podium draped in our flag and now his picture plastered across the world with his lips wrapped around a public bong, cause’s me embarrassment. Yeah, it does.

Obviously, I take the seriousness of the Olympics, and all of it’s meanings and implications, to heart. I’m sorry so many don’t.

Now then, about that scream name...maybe a little more recovery is still needed? LOL

Who cares? If everyone in America who ever hit a bong disappeared today the population would be 1/3 of what it was yesterday.

I think your comment was to the effect that the bong room was on the left, with “DU” on the door.

No hassles, friend. Just tweaking you a bit.

imagine how far he could have gotten as a competitive swimmer if he just hadn't smoked marijuana

Isn't winning more in the Olympics than anyone ever has far enough?

~ “I’m surprised by the numbers here who are upset, and who were trying to hold this young man up as perfection.” ~

I can’t speak for anyone except myself. There is a difference between being upset and feeling a sense of sadness about the path a young man has chosen. There is a difference between holding a young man up as perfection and wishing for him to make better choices for his own sake, and for the sake of those who might be influenced by him.

Somebody got a sneak photo of him taking a hit off a bong and all the sudden it's "... if he continues to promote the lifestyle of a pothead ..."??

Here's the deal. The guy is a monster swimmer. You really think he never smoked a little recreational dope all those years of discipline and drive and strength and devotion it took him to become a monster swimmer? Has it occurred to you that pot is a vastly overrated peril?

Do you actually believe that an individual who does "recreational" crystal meth or cocaine or vicodin or any other psycho drug, could even become an Olympic swimmer? Or perhaps you've never known such people?

Obviously, recreational pot interferes about as much as recreational booze with an athletes' ability, character, and performance. As for "promoting the lifestyle," that is hardly justified. There's a lot to be said for the Christian practice of "Live and let live."

Who cares what Phelps does with his private life? Obama is a chain smoker. Phelps is a bong smoker. I support each man's right to what smoke they choose to out into their lungs. It sure áint my business. I'm glad these were made public...perhaps it will help lead to the end of the absurd inclusion of pot among the group of felony drugs.

By the way, I do not smoke either pot or cigs. This is a rights issue to me.

Me either! He must of told someone he’s a Republican? That’s the only reason I can think of where they would want to try to smear him.

So, he was pictured with a pipe and that negates everything he’s ever done and everything he hopes to do in his life? Give me a break.

Someone who can do bong hits and still wipe the floor with every swimmer in the world is just unreal.

I think it’s comical that judgement will be coming from the millions who inhale “prescription” drugs daily to take the edge off of the stress yet here’s an ‘alleged’ picture of him using an herb to do the same and now HE’S the bad guy?

Amen. It appears we have a lot of purse-lipped Church Ladies in America, but then, we always have, though in the old days they were more likely sipping laudenum. By the way, I love your tagline. Just looked it up. Thank you. (John 6:29: Learn it, love it, live it.)

You may be right about that. I care because I lived through the ‘counterculture revolution’ and I’ve watched the changes for the worse that occurred in the lives of individuals, and in the life of our nation, as a result.
