Eluana Transferred Late Tuesday Night to Clinic for Death by Dehydration

ROME, February 3, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Eluana Englaro, who is often referred to as “Italy’s Terri Schiavo,” was transferred late Tuesday night to a hospital that has agreed to participate in her killing by removal of her food and hydration tube. Television news coverage showed a group of pro-life activists gathered outside the clinic in Eluana’s home town of Lecco at about 1:30am, as an ambulance took her away, some shouting “Eluana, wake up!” and “Don’t kill her!”

Eluana Englaro, 38, suffered brain damage in a car accident in 1992 and has since been in a state of diminished consciousness. Eluana’s father, Beppino Englaro, who has been petitioning the courts for over a decade to euthanize his daughter, said her transfer to the new facility is “the first step... towards the liberation of my daughter. It seems we have finally succeeded.”

Beppino Englaro’s lawyer told media that La Quiete, a private clinic in the north eastern town of Undine, had agree to participate in her killing. Welfare Minister Maurizio Sacconi said the government is searching for a new way to prevent her death. The removal of Eluana’s food and hydration tube is set to be carried out in three days.

Death by dehydration has been described by medical authorities as “horrible” and “agonizing.” It was a common form of torture used by totalitarian states, including in well-documented cases by the Nazis in their death camps.

In cases of severe dehydration, toxins build up in the body and the body's chemical balances are disrupted. This disrupts the electrical system that triggers the action of muscles, including the heart. The tongue and lips crack and bleed. The eyes recede into their orbits. The skin becomes so sensitive it peels off upon firm contact. The lining of the nose can crack and bleed. Dried brain cells can cause convulsions. The mouth becomes dry and saliva thick, and there is cracking of the mucous membranes of the mouth and lips. The blood thickens, increasing the risk of stroke. As fluid decreases in the body, blood pressure drops and the heart rate increases, possibly causing shock and heart attack.

The move to kill Eluana has roused the ire of many in Italy, including Cardinal Javier Lozano Barragan, President of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Pastoral Assistance to Health Care Workers, said on Tuesday, “Stop this murder!”

“To stop giving food and liquids to Eluana is equivalent to abominable murder and the Church will not cease to proclaim this loud and clear.” Interviewed by the Rome daily La Repubblica, the cardinal said that Eluana’s court-mandated death by dehydration “will represent a defeat for the respect of human life.” His comments come after Pope Benedict XVI spoke on Sunday against euthanasia, saying it is a false answer to suffering.

The consequences, both legal and moral, should Eluana Englaro be euthanized in a Catholic Country, will be dire, pro-life advocates have warned. Carlo Caffara, the archbishop of Bologna, said at Mass last weekend, “In the body of this woman, and in her fate, there is an image of the fate of the West.”

Eluana has become a “‘sign of contradiction’ between a culture of death and a culture of life,” he said. “Her martyred body has become the question addressed to every conscience that reflects on man's destiny: To whom does man belong? Who has dominion over man's life and death? Who owns man?”

“The spiritual event of the West has come to the end of the line: If the life of man does not belong to man but to God, no one has control over it for any reason, [but] if the life of man belongs to man, it is consistent to hypothesize circumstances in which everyone can do what he wants with his life or ask others to put an end to it,” Cardinal Caffara continued.

The killing of Eluana, said Msgr. Ignacio Barreiro, the director of the Rome office of Human Life International, is going to be disastrous for others in similar situations in Italy. Msgr. Barreiro said, “It would create a precedent whereby judges, against the law, can decide it's right to kill patients. We are not fighting for Eluana's life because she has limited signs of consciousness but because of her dignity as a human being.”

Pro-life legal experts have been especially concerned that should Eluana be “legally” killed by dehydration, it would create a “back door” through which euthanasia could be legalized. The government is considering legislation that would allow the creation of “living wills” that could specify the removal of food and hydration.

In November, health and welfare minister, Maurizio Sacconi, issued a statement that in Italy it is “illegal” to remove the food and hydration of helpless disabled patients with the purpose of ending their lives. Secretary of Welfare, Eugenia Roccella, also said that there is “no obligation” for government-funded health care facilities to implement the court’s decision that patients can be dehydrated to death.

In January, two pro-life advocates launched a legal challenge to the appeals court in Milan, arguing that the decision to allow Eluana’s killing had been made without sufficient medical examination to determine her condition. At that time, more than 700 Italian doctors had signed an open letter opposing the killing of Eluana, saying that such an action is an attack against the “basic rules of good medical practice as established in the declaration of Helsinki.”

'Right to die' can become a 'duty to die'

Imagine that you have lung cancer. It has been in remission, but tests show the cancer has returned and is likely to be terminal. Still, there is some hope. Chemotherapy could extend your life, if not save it. You ask to begin treatment. But you soon receive more devastating news. A letter from the government informs you that the cost of chemotherapy is deemed an unjustified expense for the limited extra time it would provide. However, the government is not without compassion. You are informed that whenever you are ready, it will gladly pay for your assisted suicide. . .

"Brain Death" as Criteria for Organ Donation is a "Deception": Bereaved Mother

ROME, February 23, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Bernice Jones came to Rome last week to tell the world that doctors killed her son by removing his organs. "Brain death is not death" and "organ donation is very deceptive," the bereaved mother told LifeSiteNews.com in an interview on Thursday.

Mrs. Jones was attending an international conference on the dangers of so-called "brain death" criteria and related her experience of losing her son, Brandon, who was declared "brain dead" and used as an organ donor.

"Families are led to believe that their loved ones are dead," Jones told LSN, "but in fact they are alive. You must be alive to be a vital organ donor." Families, she said, are being deceived by doctors and hospital administrators, "by everyone who is involved in organ transplantation." The declaration of brain death "is a deception, a violent deception, that your loved one is dead."

Florida Prosecutor Continues to Stonewall on Criminal Charges in Hialeah Baby Murder Case

MIAMI, FL, February 23, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Ignoring a letter signed by 44 members of the State House of Representatives Friday, Florida State Attorney Katherine Rundle issued a statement indicating that no decision has been made on the filing of criminal charges against abortionist Pierre Renelique and others involved in the intentional murder of a baby born alive during a botched abortion at a Hialeah abortion clinic.

Rundle's statement was in response to a press conference held by Rev. Pat Mahoney, Director of the Washington, DC based Christian Defense Coalition, calling on her to bring criminal charges.

Rundle said in part, "While we understand the emotional perception that this is an 'easy matter' nothing could be further from the truth. The legal and ethical requirements that we be able to prove a case beyond a reasonable doubt dictate that we thoroughly complete our investigation before we come to a legal decision in this matter."

Hawaii Legislature Won't Consider Assisted Suicide Bill This Year

HONOLULU, Hawaii, February 23, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Hawaii legislature won't consider an assisted suicide bill that was introduced on January 24, reports the Honolulu Advertiser.

The bill, HB806 would have allowed a terminally ill adult to be prescribed a lethal dose of medication to end his or her own life. Had the bill been passed, it would have made Hawaii the fourth state in the union to permit assisted suicide, after Oregon, Washington and Montana. . .

Woman Sues Planned Parenthood for Covering up Incest - Suffered Years of Abuse

WARREN CO., Ohio, February 20, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A woman who suffered years of sexual abuse at the hands of her father filed a lawsuit today suing Planned Parenthood and five of its employees for refusing to report signs of abuse when she obtained an abortion, with the result that the abuse continued for another 1 1/2 years.

Prosecuting Attorney Brian Hurley told LifeSiteNews.com (LSN) that the Planned Parenthood employees "played ostrich" when the girl told them she was being raped.

"We believe that they ignored Denise's cry for help ... and as a result she was sexually abused three times a week for a year and a half because they didn't meet their duties to report," said Hurley. . .

America is the wealthiest nation in the history of the world, we are throwing away billions on PORKULUS, but the culture of death will happily ration health care spending if they get socialized medicine.

Thread by Jim Robinson.

DeMint condemns healthcare rationing in stimulus bill

"Your medical treatments will be tracked electronically by a federal system," writes Betsy McCaughey, adjunct senior fellow at the Hudson Institute. "Having electronic medical records at your fingertips, easily transferred to a hospital, is beneficial. It will help avoid duplicate tests and errors.

"But the bill goes further. One new bureaucracy, the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology, will monitor treatments to make sure your doctor is doing what the federal government deems appropriate and cost effective. The goal is to reduce costs and 'guide' your doctor's decisions."

In short, rationing.

The above quote is from an excellent editorial in the Augusta Chronicle, as reported by Free Republic (hat tip to Gateway Pundit), that focuses on Senator Jim DeMint's contention that citizens are going to need to take to the streets to protest the Stimulus Bill, not only due to the uncontrolled spending but due to the nationalization of healthcare contained in the bill.

The perpetrators of the 'economic stimulus bill (which is nothing more than a spending bill for liberal projects) inserted funding for nationalizing healthcare, the result of which will be rationing, especially for senior adults. . .

The ONLY reason that ANYONE wants to spend a penny on embryonic stem cells is because it provides a safeguard for abortion.

Thread by GodGunsGuts.

Adult Stem Cells, +2; Embryonic Stem Cells, -1

Feb 23, 2009 — Two more successes were chalked up for adult stem cell therapies recently. Science Daily said that sufferers from Crohn’s disease may have a new treatment option by getting injections of their own bone marrow stem cells. This “now constitutes a treatment option to cure an intestinal disease that sometimes does not successfully respond to drugs and requires highly complex surgery that does not provide a cure.”

Those afflicted with type 2 diabetes also have hope, thanks to adult stem cells. Science Daily also reported that progenitor cells exist in the adult pancreas. “It is now clear that progenitor cells, with the capacity to become insulin producing cells, reside in the adult pancreas,” said researchers from UC San Diego and the Burnham Institute for Medical Research. They found that the Wnt signaling pathway is implicated in the development of type 2 diabetes. By understanding these protein-signaling pathways, they can begin to take their stem cell research toward therapeutic treatments.

Not so good for embryonic stem cells. Nature News reported, “Hybrid embryos fail to live up to stem-cell hopes.” Heidi Ledford explained, “The creation of human-animal hybrid embryos – proposed as a way to generate embryonic stem cells without relying on scarce human eggs – has met with legislative hurdles and public outcry. But a paper published this week suggests that the approach has another, more fundamental problem: it may simply not work.” Researchers could not get them to grow past the 16-cell stage, and they failed to become pluripotent. The problem seems more fundamental than trying over and over again. Some ethicists may be glad for that. . .

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- With his appointment of Dawn Johnsen, a former NARAL attorney, as the Assistant Attorney General for the Office of the Legal Counsel, pro-life advocates already know they are getting an abortion advocate in the position. Johnsen is a professor at the Indiana University School of Law, but she is also a longtime abortion advocate and worked for one of the leading abortion advocacy groups.

Ave Maria University Will Hold National Mass for Terri Schiavo's Day in March

Naples, FL (LifeNews.com) -- The Florida-based Ave Maria University will hold a national mass in honor of Terri Schiavo on March 31, the day that has been set aside to honor the disabled woman who became an international inspiration. Schiavo was killed on that date when her husband won a court order to take her life.

Terri's Foundation, the group Terri's family put together to help disabled people like her, and Priests for Life have come together for the memorial date for Terri.

In conjunction with Terri's Day, Ave Maria University will host “The National Mass for Terri’s Day” at its Naples campus.

Father Frank Pavone, president of the Catholic pro-life group, will be the main celebrant, along with Father Thomas Euteneuer, the president of Human Life International.

Terri's brother Bobby Schindler told LifeNews.com on Wednesday that the mass is another way to help his family point out how discrimination against patients like Terri continues. . .

Eugenics … death of the defenceless: The legacy of Darwin’s cousin Galton

Few ideas have done more harm to the human race in the last 120 years than those of Sir Francis Galton. He founded the evolutionary pseudo-science of eugenics. Today, ethnic cleansing, the use of abortion to eliminate ‘defective’ unborn babies, infanticide, euthanasia, and the harvesting of unborn babies for research purposes all have a common foundation in the survival-of-the-fittest theory of eugenics. So who was Galton, what is eugenics, and how has it harmed humanity?...
