Federal Cigarette Tax Increase About to Become Law
Media Newswire ^ | 2/4/2009 | Brian Marchetti

Posted on 02/04/2009 5:19:46 PM PST by bruinbirdman

This afternoon, President Obama is scheduled to sign recently passed legislation which includes a 61.66 cent increase in the federal tax on cigarettes to help fund the expansion of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). This increase raises the federal tax on cigarettes to just over $1 per pack and will help reduce the serious burden of lung disease felt across New York State by saving lives and money.

Senators Schumer and Gillibrand and the entire New York Congressional Delegation supported this historic legislation.

The American Lung Association in New York estimates that in New York, the additional federal increase of 61 cents will:

-- prevent 77,400 youth from starting to smoke;

-- help 41,300 adult smokers to quit;

-- prevent over 35,000 smoking-related deaths; and

-- save New York State $1.7 billion in future health care costs.

The American Lung Association in New York recently highlighted findings of the State of Tobacco Control 2008 report, which estimates the economic costs in New York State due to smoking are a staggering $14.1 billion dollars. The report found that New York's grades for tobacco prevention funding and coverage were among the worst in Nation, while New York's smokefree laws and tobacco taxation were among the best.

In June 2008, New York State became the national public health leader in tobacco taxation when it raised the tobacco excise tax to $2.75 - the highest in the nation. New York City has its own additional $1.50 local cigarette excise tax, bringing the total tax to $4.25 across the five boroughs.

This thing is a load of bullsh*t. If all these wonderful things actually do happen to smokers, how the hell are the DemocRATS going to pay for their S-CHIP? This is like telling drivers that the speed and red light cameras are their for their safety. It’s always about the money. Always. Americans aren’t very bright and ALWAYS fall for a good con job.

I would have quit long ago, ‘cept I don't want the government telling me I have to, especially for unproven, “scientific” reasons. (second hand smoke KILLS CHILDREN!)

They count on that you know. Addiction. That way they can have their cake and eat it too. Smokers are swine, that they can tax and nonsmokers will praise the effort.

Well, they just lost my tax dollar. And I'd advise other smokers to stock up and prepare to quit...so this scheme will blow up in their stupid, liberal faces.

Just come out and say it is a tax increase and cut out the bs.

They do not want you to quit you know.

The sooner you quit, the sooner they will have to break it to the masses that all people are going to have to be taxed for this program, the SCHIP program.

They don't want people to QUIT! How else are they going to pay for their health-care programs?

But this is going to backfire because people will either smoke less or quit all together.

But if I were the Tobacco companies, I'd slam the door shut.

If they wanted smokers to quit..smoking and tobacco would be made Illegal.

But no, they want the scurvy addicted, the child killers, to smoke and pay, pay, pay..

No one has sympathy for the smokers, you know..

Actually it won't. In support of the last major tax increase on tobacco products here in Michigan, our governor Granholm at least was truthfull when she said the tax was necessary in order to help support the General Fund.

The "health care" excuse has been worn out here in Michigan......

I truly hope that the govt. bans tobacco products (I'll get mine thru the black market). Once it does then they will have to go after the next cash cow called "Alcohol Products"...........HeHeHeHeHe......

It's not like a Democrat politician who smokes is going to pay the tax.

He'll just send a staffer to pick up a few cartons at the Res, or buy them online.

What makes these people extra dirty and proves they profit from big tobacco was the fact that they placed a $24 dollar increase on ryo. Now why would they do that? Well big tobacco like Philip Morris and this scum in Congrees made a deal to force people who smoke back to the addictive tobacco of those companies.

This is a dirty, shameful bill which just showcases the corruption of Congress.

Sure it's addictive.

Now, on top of this .61 federal tax on cigarettes, we here in Arkansas are faced with an additional .50 tax added on top of the .61.

Posted on 30 December 2008 By Rob Moritz Arkansas News Bureau

LITTLE ROCK — A conservative think tank is urging Arkansas voters to speak out against a proposed increase in the state’s cigarette tax.

Rep. Gene Shelby, D-Hot Springs, and the anti-smoking organization “Step Up Coalition” have suggested raising the tax by at least 50 cents per pack and using the revenue to pay for a new statewide trauma system estimated to cost $25 million to $30 million annually.

The rest of the revenue — a 50 cent tax hike on a pack of cigarettes would generate about $71 million annually — would possibly fund other health-related items, including the annual $3.5 million operating cost of the proposed Northwest Arkansas campus of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences"...snip

well, in order to give illegals health care we have to produce 24 million NEW smokers. So like any other liberal socialist “program” they will have to get the funding somewhere.....guess....nope it won't be the rich, the rich are rich because their not stupid and can hide $$$$, just like any senator or congress critter,....it won't be the 1/3 of the American citizen that don't pay taxes.....guess who's left?....eyep,the non-smoking American public and middle class, you've been screwed, get used to it, they won (so they say)

Smoking is about to become an elite, expensive indulgence, like learning to fly a plane in your 50’s, sailing around the world for fun, parachuting on the weekends or golf for bad golfers.

The problem here is the GOVERNMENT playing nanny, a nanny with her hands in the child's piggy bank..exploitation.

If free people want to kill themselves..it is NOT the Governments problem!

Insurance rates? Oh, is that a problem?

Well, then why doesn't the government talk about and tax homosexual behavior? If I remember correctly, my insurance rates started going up when AIDS came into being....talk about risky business! Photobucket
