Critical Threats: Blank When None
Cheney warns of new attacks

Former Vice President Dick Cheney warned that there is a “high probability” that terrorists will attempt a catastrophic nuclear or biological attack in coming years, and said he fears the Obama administration’s policies will make it more likely the attempt will succeed.

In an interview Tuesday with Politico, Cheney unyieldingly defended the Bush administration’s support for the Guantanamo Bay prison and coercive interrogation of terrorism suspects.

And he asserted that President Obama will either backtrack on his stated intentions to end those policies or put the country at risk in ways more severe than most Americans — and, he charged, many members of Obama’s own team — understand.

“When we get people who are more concerned about reading the rights to an Al Qaeda terrorist than they are with protecting the United States against people who are absolutely committed to do anything they can to kill Americans, then I worry,” Cheney said.

Minister confirms (radioactive) drums theft (Botswana)
17 March, 2009

GABORONE - A man is helping the police with investigations concerning the stealing of 16 drums containing radioactive waste, says the Minister of Communications, Science and Technology, Mrs Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi.

She explained that on October 10 last year, Poseidon Geophysics, a company contracted by CIC Energy, reported to the Department of Radiation Protection that 16 drums containing soil contaminated with Cesium -137 were stolen at the Mmamabula Coal Mine area. She added that the contaminated soil was dumped at the site. Minister Venson-Moitoi, who was answering a question in Parliament, went on to say that on January 15, the company reported that 15 drums had been found, but that one drum is still missing and efforts are still ongoing to locate it.

Bulgarian Villages had Celebrated September 11 Attacks
17.03.2009

There had been celebrations of the September 11 terrorist attacks in some villages in the Bulgarian Rodopi mountain, MP Yane Yanev revealed late Monday, quoted by novinite.com. Yanev made this stunning revelation as he explained that at least 15 municipalities in the Rodopi mountain region are attempting to convert their citizens to radical Islam, through school teaching and other methods.

Earlier Monday it was announced that Bulgaria's State Agency for National Security had arrested the Mayor town of Garmen, Ahmed Bashev and a teacher of religion Murad Bushnak, over the promotion of radical Islamism, after a warning from Yanev. It was expected that the two will be charged for crimes against national and racial equality as well as against religious teachings. Days earlier Yane Yanev had accused Ahmed Bashev of spreading radical Islam in Bulgaria via funds by an Arabian foundation. In the village of Ribnovo a school director had forced all the teachers and students to wear non-secular clothes.

The Rodopi mountains are home to most of Bulgaria's Muslim minorities - including the Muslim Bulgarians, locally called Pomaks, that predominate in the western parts and a large concentration of Bulgarian Turks, particularly in the Eastern Rodopi. There had been longtime suspicions that ministers from Middle East countries had been spreading teachings of radical Islam in the region. Many of the locals find these teachings foreign and hostile, but the region's remote location may have let them root just out of the central administration's watch.

FUSION CENTERS Unifying Intelligence to Protect Americans
March 14, 2009

In Arizona, after determining the subjects of an international terrorism case were involved in local criminal activity, the case was referred to local law enforcement. In New Mexico, several individuals linked to FBI investigations-including an MS-13 gang member-were identified. In Tennessee, we developed-with our partners-a formal process for collecting, sharing, and analyzing suspicious activity reports, looking for trends and patterns.

These cooperative efforts-and many more like them-have been made possible through the work of intelligence fusion centers around the country. These centers, usually set up by states or major urban areas and run by state or local authorities, are often supported by federal law enforcement, including the FBI.

Speaking at the Kansas City conference, our Chief Intel Officer Don Van Duyn said that "while we still have work to do to make the information process more seamless," the FBI is committed to "expanding our interconnectedness" to help combat threats from terrorist and criminal networks. He also said that during the past year we have rolled out-to all of our 56 field offices-standardized intelligence operations structures, roles, and procedures to enhance our collaboration with our partners.

B.C. court case has potential to make Google, Yahoo illegal in Canada

Vito Pilieci, The Ottawa CitizenMarch 17, 2009

A court case in British Columbia has the potential to drastically change the Canadian Internet landscape by making search engines such as Google and Yahoo illegal.

A case brought against the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) by a small search engine for BitTorrent files, called ISOHunt Web Technologies Inc., is raising questions about whether search engines are liable for the sharing of copyright-protected content online.

The question before the British Columbia Supreme Court is, if a site like ISOHunt allows people to find a pirated copy of Watchmen or The Dark Knight, is it breaching Canadian copyright law?

Pentagon chief likens bin Laden hunt to Unabomber

How long might it really take to find al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden? U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates suggests the FBI’s 17-year hunt for convicted Unabomber Theodore Kaczynski as a reasonable guide.

Or worse still, Gates said on Wednesday, consider the fate of Americans taken hostage decades ago in Lebanon who died before the United States could find and rescue them.

Speaking to reporters at the Pentagon, Gates dismissed the notion that something might be amiss because bin Laden and his top lieutenant, Ayman al-Zawahri, remain free more than seven years after the September 11 attacks.

“To a certain extent, I think too many people go to too many movies. Finding these guys is really hard, and especially if they have some kind of a support network,” he said......

23 DC Contractors to Lose Jobs Following Alleged Tech Office Scheme

The fallout continues from last week’s FBI raid on the D.C. technology office and the arrests of two men on corruption charges.

D.C. Attorney General Peter Nickles told WTOP-FM on Wednesday that the city is planning to terminate 23 contractors involved with the office.

The decision comes after the arrests Thursday of acting chief security officer Yusuf Acar and technology consultant Sushil Bansal....

Our New Terror Policy: Safety Last?

(snip to the last sentence)

Have we, in less than eight years, already forgotten that eternal vigilance is the price of liberty — as well as being the price of safety from Islamist terror for ourselves and our families?

US judge refuses bail for terror suspect

WASHINGTON (AFP) — A US federal judge refused Wednesday to release on bail alleged Al-Qaeda sleeper agent Ali al-Marri, the last “enemy combatant” held on US soil.

Judge Robert Carr of the Charleston, South Carolina federal court ruled Marri was a danger to the community and was a flight risk, according to a copy of the detention order obtained by AFP.

“There are no conditions of release that will reasonably assure the defendant’s appearance as required and the safety of the community,” said Carr.

The judge cited government claims that Marri, 43, trained in Al-Qaeda training camps in Afghanistan and entered the United States on September 10, 2001 on a fraudulently obtained student visa.

Marri “maintained communications with (alleged 9/11 mastermind) Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, researched the use of toxins, and positioned himself as an Al-Qaeda sleeper agent in the US,” said Carr.....
