A few weeks ago, a senior Greek Orthodox clergyman in Israel attended a meeting at a government office in Jerusalem's Givat Shaul quarter. When he returned to his car, an elderly man wearing a skullcap came and knocked on the window. When the clergyman let the window down, the passerby spat in his face.
The clergyman prefered not to lodge a complaint with the police and told an acquaintance that he was used to being spat at by Jews. Many Jerusalem clergy have been subjected to abuse of this kind. For the most part, they ignore it but sometimes they cannot.

We support a lot of ingrates.
And for those in the more Orthodox areas, rocks will be thrown at cars that run on the SABBATH. No ‘fire’ is suppose to be lit, on teh Sabbath, not even in spark plugs.
When in Rome. LOL
I’ve read that the ultra orthodox are exempt from military service, and manylive on welfare while they continue their religious studies, which often never end. So you could call them ingrates to their own country, too.
Doesn’t the Greek Orthodox hierarchy support the PLO and rail against Israel?
I should add that there’s a big difference between spitting at someone whose religion you disdain, and shooting rockets at them.
1. Keep in mind this is Haartz, which is secular and despises observant Jews. They are known for NYT quality journalism.
2. Many of the Haredi are generally anti-zionist, despise Jews other than themslves, and do this to everyone, not just Christians.
“Doesnt the Greek Orthodox hierarchy support the PLO and rail against Israel?”
Historically, yes. Less so, now. The arab Christians of the area aligned with the islamic arabs. This is changing.
Classy bunch over there.
“Ive read that the ultra orthodox are exempt from military service, and manylive on welfare while they continue their religious studies, which often never end. So you could call them ingrates to their own country, too.”
Somewhat. There are now orthodox divisions that resolve this.
But, yes, the Shas party is like the welfare-for-fat-guys with bad hygene party. (And I say this as a Sephard.)
“And for those in the more Orthodox areas, rocks will be thrown at cars that run on the SABBATH. No fire is suppose to be lit, on teh Sabbath, not even in spark plugs.”
Only if the cars are believed to be driven by Jews.
Non-Jews are free to do what they will on the Sabbath — light fires, whatever.
Unlike Islam, Judaism does not impose its internal restrictions on others.
They don’t spit on Jews in Rome.
Anti-Christian bigotry is rife in Israel. Whenever the subject comes up here on FR those who acknowledge the hatred of Christians by some Jews (and tolerance and cover-up of this hatred by some others, Jews and otherwise) are roundly criticized for daring to point this out. But I believe that it strengthens Israel just as it strengthens all of humankind to tell the truth regarding such matters. Genuine pluralism is absolutely necessary for human advancement. No one can be allowed to remain exempt from the requirement to respect the faith of others.
Oh, I am sure you could find the neighborhood in Rome where they would.
Yeah, they spat in in the Son of God’s face as well.
Spit back and then invite them to join you for an AIDS cocktail, for which you are already late.
It sounds like at least some Jews are imposing their internal fluids on others.
How To Win Friends And Influence People
While Christians are hated worldwide, it will not always be the case that the Jews will hate those who have been grafted in.
Some old fracker spits on me, I’m going to return the favor with a deep, long, sinus clearing hawk right in his eye.
Disrespect is a two way street.
Haartz is a joke, known for this stuff.
Its editors love Obama and Olmert, and yet you take it as truth?
There's a big difference in degree, but the two are not entirely unrelated in kind. Regardless, both are wrong.
Its editors love Obama and Olmert, and yet you take it as truth?
I don't think this comment of yours is an honest response to the story.
I doubt it.
Are you saying Italians are notoriously anti-semitic? And there’s a media conspiracy of silence?
You’re full of it.
Haartz is a secular paper with a record of false stories against religious Jews.
But how can they throw a rock? Sounds like work to me.
You need to do google search of “jew spit on christian”
“Are you saying Italians are notoriously anti-semitic? And theres a media conspiracy of silence?”
Not at all. But I am sure, somewhere in Rome we’d find an old facists would be a prick to a Jewish person, just like (if this story is true), they found some old Haredi who don’t like what they deem interlopers.
Point being, you get a paper like Haartz with an agenda, they can write the story they want, then go find some event to shoe-horn into their approved story-line.
“Youre full of it.”
If “it” is sticking to the truth, even when unpopular, I guess I am.
Haartz has an agenda. They go out and find crap to spread that fits their agenda.
It’s an unpleasant but well-known fact that non-Jews are routinely spat upon by Jews in Jerusalem. That is not disputable by reasonable people — though perhaps you are not interested in being reasonable.
It’s in no sense comparable to your theory that in Rome or any other city there might be found isolated cranks given to rude and offensive displays of anti-semitism. The article itself quotes a named Israeli government official to the effect that during Purim some gentiles lock themselves away for fear of assault.
I defy you to make comparable allegations about Jews living in such fear anyplace (outside the Occupied Territories, I mean).
You are evidently willfully blind to certain truths. They exist all the same.
“government official to the effect that during Purim some gentiles lock themselves away for fear of assault.”
Purim is like Jewish mardi gras. All sane people lock themselves away for fear of assault.
Wouldn’t throwing the rock be a work on the sabbath?
I pray for the peace of Jerusalem every day. I respect and revere the purposes of God in preserving Israel, and I look forward to the day of their redemption, when as Ezekiel describes, they once again stand as a mighty army before God (Ezekiel 37).
I will go further... I can honestly say that I would never condone nor participate in a military action against Israel. Ultimately, to fight Israel is to be at odds with the purposes of God.
BUT, Israel has LONG had a problem with knowing who to trust and who to fear. They have historically had a tendency to bite the hand that feeds them. This trend apparently continues.
Israel should understand that this won’t help them before the greater masses of the Western Public. By allowing such foolishness in their streets, they encourage their enemies in the US and Europe. They are putting themselves in a situation in which only God can save them...
Even so, Lord Jesus, come...
I don’t blame the Jews...and can handle their spit...What I couldn’t handle is they way they have been treated for the last 6000 years.
Bingo. (Although I certainly do NOT support the bad behavior reported here).
How about Athens?
You’d think these Christian-hating spitters might be a bit more worried about the fanatical Muslims than the shrinking minority of Christians in the Holy Land.
Are we allowed to object to this behavior post holocaust ?
Even if that is true it is beside the point and you know it.
"Occupied territories"? What are you, PLO or Hamas?
a/ According to the "people" who use that phrase ALL OF ISRAEL IS OCCUPIED TERRITORY.
b/ What do you call 26000 rockets in the last few years from Hezbullah and Hamas?
DEFIANT ENOUGH FOR YOU?
No, I know there are cranks in every city.
Haaretz finds Haredi cranks and then publishes pre-determined stories, with a slant to inflame passions of those ignorant of the truth.
I’ve lived in the old city. Indeed, I lived there for several years in school. The Haredi in question are ANTI-ZIONIST, hate fellow Jews (especially secular Jews), muslims, and Christians with equal passion, and are basically mean to everyone.
Of course, Haaretz (which also dislikes evangelical Christians, and, indeed, any Christians who support Israel for religious reasons) publishes the anti-Christian stories in order to ferment mutual distrust between Christians and Jews.
Repeating the last line: “publishes the anti-Christian stories in order to ferment mutual distrust between Christians and Jews.”
You are their indeeded target. And they gotcha.
Off-topic, Yehuda. The subject is spitting.
You destroyed any credibility you might have had with your “occupied territories” slip.
Your agenda is clear.
Go back to Jordon or whatever shithole you crawled out of.
Haaretz, Haaretz, Haaretz.
So what explains the appearance of such stories in other places?
“NO profanity, NO personal attacks, NO racism or violence in posts.”
Please get a grip.
I would not characterise the denizens of this neighbourhood as "English".
Rome has similar neighbourhoods.
OK, I'll concede that. Probably the same can be said for some neighborhoods in London and Paris. But we call this outrageous and intolerable, don't we? We don't dismiss it as isolated and unimportant. If contemptuous public assaults on Jews are going to be condemned, the same standard MUST apply in Jerusalem when non-Jews are targeted.
In view of the nastiness on display, I begin to wonder whether certain posters on this thread have a guilty conscience in this respect.
You took it off-topic.
“”I defy you to make comparable allegations about Jews living in such fear anyplace (outside the Occupied Territories, I mean).”
“The subject is spittin””
Which I condemn, as well as useful idiots who use the phrase “Occupied Territories.”
If “occupied territories” is not politically correct terminology, I never received the memo. For the record, what would you have them called? And why is “OT” objectionable?
NO, I didn’t take anything off-topic. Are you suggesting that spitting is somehow related to terrorism and random guerrilla attacks? Perhaps spitting is terrorism too? It’s certainly targeted ethnic intimidation. Is that what you mean?
