District of Columbia when it became the nation's capital two centuries ago would be granted under legislation the Senate passed Thursday.
Congress is "moving to right a centuries-old wrong," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid shortly before the 61-37 vote.
The House is expected to pass the measure with a strong majority next week and President Barack Obama, a co-sponsor when the bill failed to clear the Senate two years ago, has promised to sign it.
The measure is likely to face a court challenge immediately after becoming law; opponents argue that it is unconstitutional because D.C. is not a state and does not qualify for representation.

And we are just dosing off presently.
DC's not a state Reid, you damn fool... It's a village. DC was created to house the buildings of the fed gov. and was never to be considered, or treated as a State. It's a village that contains a bunch of the nations prominent idiots.
If the Rats can give D.C. one House of Representative member, why not two? Or three? Or a hundred?
Yeah, I stand corrected. He thinks that fourth Utah House seat is actually worth it. He doesn’t give a rat’s derriere about the Constitution.
Isn’t this unconstitutional?
I think that's the plan. all right.
Anymore, crickets tote a greater audience to this concern as sad as it is.
So, the Founders were WRONG and the current Communist are right. Go figure.
So was electing a dead man (Mel Carnahan) to the United States Senate. The GOP folded then; they'll fold now.
Does it matter in real time?
“Harry, you cant do that, its against the Constitution!”
DIDN’T YOU KNOW??????
The Constitution is just a god-damned piece of paper to these people.
Wayne Madsen SWEARS he heard it from someone, who heard it from someone, who heard it from someone who SWEARS they heard it from Bush!!!
You watch them next produce a bill to give DC a Senator.
Grave spinning creates global warming.
Next comes the grave tax since the death tax has already been implemented.
EVERYTHING in God's creation is taxable via human twisting.
George Harrison pegged it, back in the sixties, to a tee!
Why in the world does Utah need to run a RINO (Don’t know him but if he truly is one)
The Dalai Bama is acting quickly to implement Marxism and ensure future elections for Marxists..
He senses correctly his “presence” isn’t long term...
The shorter the better.
Those in government had damn well abide by the doctrine of freedom!
Here's your 51 star flag.
If you don't think it's uniform, then you're racist.
Back in the 1840’s, the portion of DC that was ceded by Virginia asked to be be taken back so they could have representation.
Virginia said yes and those folks are now part of, and represented by, that state. That’s why DC is the size it is today - all the real estate associated with DC is that which was ceded by Maryland.
The remedy is to ask back into Maryland to get representation - it’s easier than statehood. That would leave only the WH, the Capitol and the mall as the “District.”
I think I got that right from a quick read.
Every damn day! Something new and unjust.
There was a reason there was no representative for DC and a good one.
This has got to end but when? When will people finally take to the streets? When is the uprising of outrage and anger going to take place?
I really do hope and pray that FReepers and the rest of those who value their freedom wake up and really fight these awful, awful things that the left is doing to the USA.
Folks, you won’t get these things back.
It won’t happen this time.
The masses are more ignorant than ever.
The demographics are changing. Capitalism, the constitution, individual freedom—all “white man’s magic” to most minorities.
Guess who is fast becoming the minority?
I believe that history will show that these times we’re in will be among the most pivotal in our nation’s history.
Don’t sit quietly waiting for something to come along.
Lady luck favors the bold. Be bold!
I don’t know how anyone could look out over the landscape and see this as anything but a dismantling of the principles and laws that have kept us free.
Please wake up, America!
Before it’s too late.
For decades I have strongly suggested The area comprising the District of Columbia be returned to the State of Maryland, and a new demographically centered federal district established. My reasoning all along has been to thwart any attempt to grant the District of Columbia statehood, or any similar status.
Notes: When the federal capital was established the demographic center of the nation was near Baltimore, Maryland. It has since moved westward and is currently in western Missouri, approaching Kansas. Having a more demographically centered federal district makes it possible for the various elected representatives to better represent their districts and states, rather than allowing a single region of the country control over the national government.
self ping for later
Its not, really. Section 8, Article 1 provides for Congress “to exercise exclusive legislation in all cases whatsoever, over such District”.
yes it is.
Section 2. The House of Representatives shall be composed of members chosen every second year by the people of the several states, and the electors in each state shall have the qualifications requisite for electors of the most numerous branch of the state legislature.
I'm an individual with capability of thought, if that makes me racist, so be it.
“Will never pass SCOTUS muster.”
Yeah, like the McCain Feingold bill.
How does Utah warrant an extra seat in the House? One for Utah, one for DC.....can anyone tell me how this is supposed to work or be constitutional?
>>Who were the insane Republicans that voted for this???
Im sure that will come to light here very quickly...<<<
Well they got another rep for Utah in exchange so it shouldn’t effect the balance.
And I see an argument for either not taxing them or else giving them representation.
Now on to Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, US Virgin Islands, Yeeearrgh!
wikipedia has a map of the part of Virginia which left DC.
They haven’t pretended to give a damned about the Constitution since FDR. They just pass whatever the hell they want and hope the SC agrees with them.
----Robert Byrd (Sr D-WVA)
I agree ... what on earth is in the water? How can they vote on a blatantly unconstitutional bill?
“Theyre not even pretending to be restricted by the Constitution anymore.”
If they are no longer bound by the Constitution then they are fair game, because we will thus have no foundational laws to restrict us, either, and thus anything goes.
Specter (R-PA), Yea
Collins (R-ME), Yea
Snowe (R-ME), Yea
Voinovich (R-OH), Yea
Hatch (R-UT), Yea
The usual suspects plus Hatch...Byrd and Baucus voted Nay on the D’s side.
That's for sure.
“One of the states had better go to court over this. Its flatly unconstitutional.”
You and I finally agree on something.
“I know, my ignorance on this is showing, but can someone give me a run down as to why this is unconstitutional?”
D.C. is a federally-created district, and as the hub of the government is supposed to be “neutral.” Constitutionally, only states can have voting representation.
The pols in Washington just make up the rules as they go along.
Why stop here. Why not vote to increase the number of Senators and congressman in NY and CA, and decrease the amounts in TX.
I think we, like Caesar and his army, have crossed the Rubicon. We’re in deep dodo.
It seems that the soap box has failed, and the ballot box has failed. That leaves just one more box.
I did feel a strange tremor in the Force.
Because the framers didn't want one state having undue influence over the national seat of government via the state legislature and law enforcement.
It was a move about on par with restricting legions from entering Rome.
Thanks for your answer.
I doubt that would have been a problem, would it? Unless, were Washington been made part of Marylandback then, Annapolis might have become a power magnet or a corruption magnet, much different than what it currently is?
Sorry, I’m not familiar with the history of Rome. Could you please explain?
