Senate votes to give DC citizens vote in Congress
Associate Press ^ | February 26, 2009 | JIM ABRAMS

Posted on 02/26/2009 2:59:26 PM PST by stevie_d_64

District of Columbia when it became the nation's capital two centuries ago would be granted under legislation the Senate passed Thursday.

Congress is "moving to right a centuries-old wrong," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid shortly before the 61-37 vote.

The House is expected to pass the measure with a strong majority next week and President Barack Obama, a co-sponsor when the bill failed to clear the Senate two years ago, has promised to sign it.

The measure is likely to face a court challenge immediately after becoming law; opponents argue that it is unconstitutional because D.C. is not a state and does not qualify for representation.

DC's not a state Reid, you damn fool... It's a village. DC was created to house the buildings of the fed gov. and was never to be considered, or treated as a State. It's a village that contains a bunch of the nations prominent idiots.

Why not give them two senate seats too?

If the Rats can give D.C. one House of Representative member, why not two? Or three? Or a hundred?

Anymore, crickets tote a greater audience to this concern as sad as it is.

Our Constitution has been trashed years ago and is being finished off with King Obama and the RAT party.

Grave spinning creates global warming.

Next comes the grave tax since the death tax has already been implemented.

EVERYTHING in God's creation is taxable via human twisting.

George Harrison pegged it, back in the sixties, to a tee!

Back in the 1840’s, the portion of DC that was ceded by Virginia asked to be be taken back so they could have representation.

Virginia said yes and those folks are now part of, and represented by, that state. That’s why DC is the size it is today - all the real estate associated with DC is that which was ceded by Maryland.

The remedy is to ask back into Maryland to get representation - it’s easier than statehood. That would leave only the WH, the Capitol and the mall as the “District.”

I think I got that right from a quick read.

There was a reason there was no representative for DC and a good one.

This has got to end but when? When will people finally take to the streets? When is the uprising of outrage and anger going to take place?

I really do hope and pray that FReepers and the rest of those who value their freedom wake up and really fight these awful, awful things that the left is doing to the USA.

Folks, you won’t get these things back.

It won’t happen this time.

The masses are more ignorant than ever.

The demographics are changing. Capitalism, the constitution, individual freedom—all “white man’s magic” to most minorities.

Guess who is fast becoming the minority?

I believe that history will show that these times we’re in will be among the most pivotal in our nation’s history.

Don’t sit quietly waiting for something to come along.

Lady luck favors the bold. Be bold!

I don’t know how anyone could look out over the landscape and see this as anything but a dismantling of the principles and laws that have kept us free.

Please wake up, America!

Please fight!

Before it’s too late.

For decades I have strongly suggested The area comprising the District of Columbia be returned to the State of Maryland, and a new demographically centered federal district established. My reasoning all along has been to thwart any attempt to grant the District of Columbia statehood, or any similar status.

Notes: When the federal capital was established the demographic center of the nation was near Baltimore, Maryland. It has since moved westward and is currently in western Missouri, approaching Kansas. Having a more demographically centered federal district makes it possible for the various elected representatives to better represent their districts and states, rather than allowing a single region of the country control over the national government.

“They’re not even pretending to be restricted by the Constitution anymore.”

If they are no longer bound by the Constitution then they are fair game, because we will thus have no foundational laws to restrict us, either, and thus anything goes.

D.C. is a federally-created district, and as the hub of the government is supposed to be “neutral.” Constitutionally, only states can have voting representation.

Why wasn’t Washington, (DC), made part of the state of Maryland, way back when?

Because the framers didn't want one state having undue influence over the national seat of government via the state legislature and law enforcement.

It was a move about on par with restricting legions from entering Rome.

Thanks for your answer.

I doubt that would have been a problem, would it? Unless, were Washington been made part of Marylandback then, Annapolis might have become a power magnet or a corruption magnet, much different than what it currently is?

Sorry, I’m not familiar with the history of Rome. Could you please explain?
