CRITICALLY INJURED IN SKIING ACCIDENT ###
Actress Natasha Richardson is brain dead - after falling in a ski accident in Canada - and is now on sad journey home to New York, friends told The Post today.
Richardson, who was being treated at a Montreal hospital, is being transported to New York this afternoon so her mom Vanessa Redgrave, two children and other loved ones can say goodbye before she's taken off life-support, friends said.

She was up and walking up to an hour after the accident. The fact that it can have a delayed reaction like that is really scary.
This is a shame! Prayer for her family.
I wonder if the swelling, which takes a little time to set in, is what did it.
It says she was on the bunny slope, how can that kill someone?! What kind of fall was it? A Sonny-Bono-into-a-tree kind of fall? Just falling over on her skis and bumping her head? Sounds like more than what is being reported happened!
Prayers to Liam Neeson, their sons, and her family and friends. BUT it also seems very fast that they are going to pull the plug on her, doesn’t it?
This one is hard to beliexe ...a fall on the beginners slope should be no big deal
We were skiing just yesterday. It’s hard to imagine what happened to have caused such a serious injury. She was so vivacious and beautiful in The Parent Trap.
Yes, it does seem fast. Like they’ve given up hope immediately. But we don’t know the timeline, really.
Our family absolutely adores her in the Parent Trap.
I recall reading at one time years ago that even a fall from a bicycle can be extremely dangerous, hence the need for helmets. As in this case, there can be delayed reaction to a fall.
Could have had an aneurysm or other undiagnosed problem that the fall triggered.
Prayers for her and her family.
Healthcare reform my ass!
Yes, prayers for her and her family.
She was great in Parent Trap.
I’m wondering if she did something to her vertebrae in her neck that could be affecting her brain? I had an uncle many decades who was a fireman, and was riding on the back of a fire truck on his way to a fire when the fire truck hit a bump, and his head was thrust backwards, like it does with a whiplash. He was fine for a little while, but a few hours later, he collapsed and died. An autopsy showed he suffered a neck injury, which caused some kind of a blood clot which travelled to his brain and killed him.
Does anybody know what she hit her head on? I can’t see someone being injured this bad falling on snow while skiing the bunny slope. Maybe she had something wrong and the fall made it worse. Either way it’s a shame it had to happen.
OH, so sad. What a wonderful actress she was. Very classy lady.
Condolences to her family.
If she is brain dead what is the difference? Do you even know what that means?
I guess it depends on what other organs may be shutting down because of the brain injury. The brain is not just for thinking - it is like the CPU of bodily systems.
Let’s not forget about God’s grace and that miracles happen. Prayers for all concerned.
When they say brain dead that is it. It is over. please look the term up.
There is absolutely no point of keeping someone alive when they are brain dead.
Two other threads currently on this (sad) subject.
The first one is the reference thread.
Sam Kinison went the same way, though from a car accident, in that he was up and speaking with people at the site of the accident, then collapsed and was gone.
UPDATE 2:00 PM ET -- The hospital tells TMZ Richardson is sedated and suffering from brain swelling -- but, contrary to some reports, is not brain dead. We can't confirm the accuracy of the hospital's statements, or the other reports circulating the web -- fact is, right now we just don't know.
I know someone who was almost killed at a ski slope just standing. Someone went out of control and a ski hit her in the head and almost killed her.
Thank you for the update.
Why should I when a big-mouthed, know-it-all with an attitude like you is around to bestow your vast knowledge upon us?
We now know what happened to Natasha Richardson on the ski slope when she was critically hurt yesterday, suffering a brain injury.
We're told she was having a private lesson on a green slope (beginner) at a ski resort in Quebec, Canada. She fell -- we're not sure why. There was no blood and no sign of impact. Two ski patrollers came to her rescue. When they got there she was conscious -- smiling and making jokes.
An hour later, Natasha started to complain of a headache and said she didn't feel well. Someone from the resort called 911, and she was taken to the hospital in an ambulance. Natasha was conscious when she left the resort.
One of the possibilities might be a brain bleed or aneurysm that the fall might've triggered. May our merciful Lord be with her and grant her healing.
Have you ever had to make that awful decision?
In this regard, yes I do know it all! Been there!
It is moot anyway. Apparently she has some brain swelling but that is all thank God.
Go take a shot of some Irish whiskey(St. Patricks after all) and relax. ;-)
I have been through an intense fall and I know what kind of surgery she needs.
Godspeed to her.
Any trauma department should know that, but it most likely was overlooked. Her ICP was most likely too high and nothing was done to relieve it.
GOD I HOPE THERE IS NO “HEATH LEDGER” STYLE MASS GREIVING
Oh, please, do tell me more.
When are we going to stop the madness! Ban all ski’s and ski resorts before the next tragedy.
If only one life is saved, it will be worth it
My little boy and I spend 2-1/2 months at UCSF. He had been placed in PICU for about 5 days. They did not think he was going to survive long enough to receive Chemo.
Anyway, he did!!! and I was granted grace by God to a full wonderful 8 months with Timmy who really did not suffer from the effects of chemo.
Three days after father's day 1992 he became sick with an infection. Some call it Sepsis. It ravaged his little body until 8 hours later at midnight June 25, 1992 he was declared BRAIN DEAD.
My husband and I were left with the horrible choice of disconnecting his life support. It was so hard. I was forced by his nurse Barbara whom I will be forever grateful for forcing me down that hallway to say good bye.
The only thing that I did not want to do is be there when they turned off the machines. So...I climbed into the bed with him and stroked is new growing hair we told him how much we loved him and it was a great privilege to be him mommy and daddy, and begged him to wake up! The staff from UCSF flew up to Eureka California to take him back, but there was no point to it. They were wonderful. They waited patiently for us to say goodbye.
They also explained to us how they determine a patient is brain dead, and the procedure they use for children. In short, if there is no blood flow to the brain the brain dies. They showed me the video of Timmy's brain and there was nothing going to his brain.
So, that is why I know. I am not a know it all. But I do know about this.
Sorry if I was being snitty about it. No harm was intended by me.
Same here. My kids just love to watch that movie....and they’re 17 & 20. I enjoyed it too......sad end to her life. I never realized that she was Vanessa Redgrave’s daughter
The ski people wanted her to seek medical attention. She refused and they asked her to sign a release which she did. Otherwise they could have gotten sued.
They still may for all we know.
A very touching story. It must have been horrible to bear.
God Bless You.
Your post really touched me (watery eyes). I pray for Timmy and the whole family. God Bless.
Whenever I hear a story like this...It really brings back some memories. Yes, at first for a few years it is a very painful memory. But oddly enough, that was a precious moment in his life and I wanted to be there. You see, his death was just a very small part of his short life. But boy, did he live it for a two year old believe me!! What a little pistol.
yes, we all miss him very much.
Ms. Richardson’s family must be going through hell right now. My prayers are definately with them at this time.
And even though I can't abide Vanessa Redgrave's politics, I pray for her to find comfort, after losing her daughter who was at such a relatively young age.
My very favorite role she played was in "Waking Up in Reno," a total "whiskey tango" comedy with Patrick Swaze, Billy Bob Thorton, and Charlise Theron. I absolutely fell in love with her character.
Barbara was a wise nurse.
Thank you for sharing Timmy Ryans’s story.
Yeah, she was great. She worked on the regular Peds ward. She came down to ICU to be with Timmy. After everything was over, all the nurses on ICU and Peds collected 500.00 to pay for Timmy’s head stone.
Thank you for sharing such a difficult memory with us.
May God bless you and help you to carry only good memories of your son.
Too damned young!
Losing a family member is hard even after they had a long and happy life. A real travesty is the loss of a precious child so young and denied a life so promising. Prayers for all concerned to you and yours.
My older brother was in a nursing home. He fell asleep in a wheelchair and tumbled forward, he landed badly and broke his neck. He survived the fall and shortly thereafter died of kidney failure. Strange things happen everyday.
