Terence Corcoran: Is this the end of America?
National Post/Financial Post ^ | 03/19/2009 | Terence Corcoran

U.S. law-making is riddled with slapdash, incompetence and gamesmanship

Helicopter Ben Bernanke’s Federal Reserve is dropping trillions of fresh paper dollars on the world economy, the President of the United States is cracking jokes on late night comedy shows, his energy minister is threatening a trade war over carbon emissions, his treasury secretary is dithering over a banking reform program amid rising concerns over his competence and a monumentally dysfunctional U.S. Congress is launching another public jihad against corporations and bankers.

As an aghast world — from China to Chicago and Chihuahua — watches, the circus-like U.S. political system seems to be declining into near chaos....

Mr. Lincoln said it well in his Hall of Presidents speech:

President Lincoln

I keep a link to this on my desktop, and listen to it at odd intervals, usually after reading something that alarms me.

“I think we are crossing the threshold with the majority caring about nothing but their lifestyle, their garages filled with materialistic crap and a free ride, and they will surrender any freedom to secure it.”

You know, its arguable that our present state is the inevitable result of a people which inculcated the “Greed is Good” mentality of the 1980s. All the talk of America as a Christian nation, etc. was and is garbage. America’s god became money and “materialistic crap” and we went along with the Ivan Boeskys of this country and created a government, whether headed by Ds or Rs, designed to advance that godless materialism. And now we get to reap the whirlwind.

I have, for some decades, believed that a Second American Revolution was the only possible salvation for us. The problem: it would probably resemble the French more than the American. Both these things are even more obvious today than even a few years ago. But I admit that a sort of nihilism has crept into my thinking. An American French Revolution would not be productive of much of lasting value, but it might at least be cathartic!

Our country as a whole is not weak, but our leadership is weak.

I'm not sure "who" you are referring to.... My assessment is that the majority of the country is weak, as witnessed by the support for Obama. The majority will happily stand by and support the destruction of the country.... hh

Exactely what ol Abe Licoln said. America will destroy its self from with in. No foreign army will ever drink a drop of water from the Ohio river. Not even pres. sh-t head can bring that about. But he may try.

Indeed. You are correct.

As a side note, do you remember when people used to respect not only that you were successful, but how you became successful. I’m 50 years old. We always respected wealthy, successful people, but never respected those who became wealthy by ill-gotten gains. A great number of people today respect — or should I say, envy and wish to be — anybody wealthy, even those who lied, cheated and stole their fortune. When I was young, that was objectionable. Today it is embraced.

I think political correctness is the most dangerous threat to freedom that has occurred in my lifetime, but moral relativism is right up there.

“I don’t know what I’m doing, ok?'

At least if the nation had elected Biden, there would be some sympathy factor. After all, both he and Spector have had the entire tops of their skulls removed, brain surgery performed, and the had their skulls put back, sewed up, etc.

That's always freaked me out a little. How many people do you know who have had the entire tops of their heads removed, their skulls, anyway? I guess it's not so strange a thing any more, but 20 years ago it was. Biden returned to the Senate with this whole mongol look going for him, that has never completely disappeared.

Which brings up another thing. In my experience, the self confidence of the retarded, even their happiness, if you will, is in direct inverse proportion with their appearance to the majority of the world as stereotypically "retarded" on first glance. The most severely retarded seem to be those least perceived, superficially and on first glance that is, as being "retarded." Their condition is late, low-oxygen birth trauma, usually. While the saddest among the retarded are those who are bright enough (brighter perhaps than most so called "normal people" in San Francisco, perhaps) to know they are retarded.

I'd use the politically correct term "mental disability" but that covers too much territory.

Sooner or later, Obama will blunder in a way that cost lives, unfortunately, in a characteristically telegenic manner. His conceit and perception of all men being fools is a terrible error. A gift of Providence to the weak personality turned into a belief system.

You gotta read this executive order issued by Obama to the DoD in relation to the new DoD Civilian Expeditionary Work Force, which is to serve in a military support role:

http://www.dtc.mil/whs/directives/corres/pdf/140410p.pdf

Beckwith , if you have not read this, you might want to go over it. It may be of use for the Obama file site.

Allegra, it may affect your employer, hard to say.

Terence Corcoran: Is this the end of America?

Most likely, no. It's stupid monetary policy, however.

And, some are finally waking up to what I’ve been saying since 11/4/08 - we aren’t simply “in a cycle” where all will return to “normal.”
