Looks like it happened here. He would have been coming from the north and failed to follow the bend to the west. I would guess that the low-slung car just hung up on the rails, since it looks like the crossing is just for access to the field south of the tracks.

Take a look at the car ... it wasn’t t-boned as if it was sitting across the tracks.

I still think he thought it was a road and turned onto the tracks.
