I’m in for a few! Folks are in town again (we’ve been seeing a LOT of them lately; they’re helping my wife and me find a new place) and I’m getting ready for another weekend at the track. This week it’s an SCCA vintage race at Laguna Seca. Our vintage weekends are pretty relaxed and we get to see a lot of beautiful race cars from past years.

Anyone remember my comments last Friday about how I consider it a good weekend if nobody writes off a car or leaves the track in an ambulance? Well, nobody left Sears Point last week in an ambulance, but we had TWO cars sustain quite a bit of damage. One spun coming off T10 (the fastest turn on the track), hit the tires on the right and then the bare K-wall on the left. I felt really bad for that particular driver; he’s only 16 years old and had just gotten his novice permit and he wrecked his car in his first race ever.

The other was a Panoz GTS which drove straight into the tires at T11 (where I was working). He hit the wall hard enough to damage the catch fencing, which necessitated finishing the weekend using the “short” T11 used by motorcycles and IndyCars.

Neither driver was injured, although the driver of the Panoz did need some help getting out of his car.

Time for a Tall Tale....which is true.
While a Good Buddy AFB in San Angelo, we of little dinero and little time off, would head off the Ramada Inn Friday nights to get a break from the AF burgers and fries mess line at the chow hall.

After a quick trip across the county line to pick up Lone Star in a bag, we'd treat ourselves to a meal which we could afford. The restaurant offered Steak.....Cowboy and Cowgirl sized for kids, a medium sized steak which was our regular (I forget what they called it....) and a Texas Style steak which was four pounds of some heifer, grilled and served with home fries and something real close to a salad. If you could eat the whole thing, you'd get a free meal next time you visited.

Only one of us tried to down a Texas Style steak dinner there once....didn't make it to the freebie and barely made it out the door.

Nothing endears the Lone Star State to me more than the challenge of being there.
