PRAGUE – Just hours after North Korea launched a long-range rocket, President Barack Obama called for "a world without nuclear weapons" and said the United States has a “moral responsibility ” to lead the way, as the only nation ever to use them.

Speaking to Iran, the other nation widely thought to be pursuing nuclear weapons, Obama reiterated his campaign pledge to engage the Tehran regime, winning applause for saying, “We believe in dialogue.”

Does he really think Iran or N.Korea would give up their nukes if they have them. Does he believe that Russia will not be cheating before the ink is dry on the treaty?

Realistically, they'll go nowhere. As few as 100 nuclear weapons could render even the largest of nations into a poisoned, medieval basket case for centuries. That threshold is far lower with most nations.
What President Obama doesn't understand is that the prospect of making your enemies extinct, or turning their land into a poisoned, medieval basket case for centuries, is a very attractive prospect within human nature. With a little guidance, that urge can be civilized and suppressed, or it can be fed and nurtured, but either way, it exists.
Getting rid of the weapons is pointless. Even if you destroyed them all, the knowledge to create them cannot be uninvented. Someone could recreate them, and eventually, someone will.
There are a few scenarios on how to exist in a world with nuclear weapons. None of them sound good; none of them are good. Obama's scenario, on the other hand, sounds nice, but is completely impossible.

Some of us, maybe. But think about it. The most likely places to be hit by a coordinated effort (and I think that's what will happen...several bombs, suicide, roadside, whatever) are New York, San Francisco and the most vulnerable, I believe, Washington, DC.
If Washington, then people will die who have close connections to the ruling class. That will change perspectives.

If only the children WERE in charge. I know a Boy Scout troop that would do an admirable job of leading the United States. One lad in particular would make a great C-in-C, he’s great with video games and always wants the latest weaponry when he’s blasting away to get to the next level. Perfect.
