The Boston Globe is raising its prices in an effort to remain viable, according to a memo to its distributor obtained by the Herald.
Effective May 4, the cover price of the beleaguered broadsheet delivered outside of Greater Boston Monday through Saturday will increase to $1.50 - a 50-cent increase.
The price of the Sunday Globe will increase to $3.50 in Eastern Massachusetts and $4 everywhere else.
The paper, which its parent New York Times [NYT] Co. has threatened to shut down next month, said in the memo: With the current economic conditions, The Boston Globe is making significant changes to remain viable.
One is this price increase, which now will cover the actual cost to distribute the paper.

Of that $1.50, $1.25 goes to the unions.

$1.50? That’s about $1.38 more than its worth.
If it's a question of viability, raise the price to $10 a day.
Or even $20.
People will be happy to pay it.
Why not a nice even $5 ?
That’s pretty steep for bird cage liner.
Garbage is garbage, no matter what it’s valued at.
To use the rationale often given by Mass pols at tax increase time, “That’s not all that much. Why it’s the price of a cup of coffee... at Starbucks. No, scratch that, it’s the price of a breakfast special at IHOP...no, how about it’s the price of a paperback
novel?” (i.e., keeps going up_

What DUMMIES! They shoulda CUT prices. They are FINISHED now! LOL...oh, the JOY!
If the product isn't selling - the logical thing to do is to raise the price!!
Sounds like the same plan that zerO is using.
see my post on this thread—a comic strip called Bound and Gagged showed some birds looking at their new “bathroom”...
a newspaper dubbed ‘The Times’...
Only a liberal could believe that raising prices in the face of continually declining sales is a viable business survival strategy.
The Herald should drop their prices temporarily until the Globe folds just to speed up the death of the Boring Broadsheet.
