AN HONEST student who handed in a mobile phone he found was stunned when police arrested him for theft.

Paul Leicester, 18, played the Good Samaritan when he discovered the handset lying in the street.

He rang the last number dialled and told a friend of the owner he would leave the phone at a nearby police station. But officers arrested him for “theft by finding”, held him for four hours and took a DNA sample.

Yesterday Paul said: “I thought I was doing the right thing and had it thrown back in my face. I wouldn’t go to the police in future. All I was doing was the honest thing. It was a shocking experience.”

The A-level student at Southport College, Merseyside, had been out celebrating his 18th birthday last month when he found the phone.

Paul added: “Being arrested isn’t a good way to celebrate your birthday. What are you supposed to do when you find a phone?”

LOL, I hear ya, but that doesn’t exactly jive with your “throw it” original comment.

Have a happy Easter!

“What are you supposed to do when you find a phone?”

Throw it in a storm drain ASAP apparently.

Good explanation of the law. It sounds like the British police haven’t improved much since the days of Holmes & Watson.

I had a similar experience in college. I'd found a wallet in the gym locker room, and rather than handing it off to the guy who hands out towels, I walked it across the street to campus PD. You'd think I just knocked over a pharmacy. I ended up filing a complaint against the cop, and got a nice (and I thought sincere) apology from his boss.

I saw the story and thought: “Has to be the Brits.” The idea of “law” in that country has degraded to the point where criminals have free reign, and the citizens live in fear.

I really do believe Great Britain has completely lost its collective mind.

Everything they do now is nuts.

After I posted, I realized what you meant. I am a grandmother who has not worked in 15 yrs. My husband worked for the telephone company. Neither one of us is or ever has been a cop. I just happen to believe we need laws and law enforcement officers.

I will agree that there are 'some' bad cops, however most of them are themselves law abiding citizens who want to know that their families don't live in a lawless society.

You can diss cops all you want and they will still answer your call for help.

God bless you.

The Brits have become completely wimped out wusses. Geez, to think they once colonized most of the civilized world, and now to see them subjugated by this pathetic U.K. “nanny state”... sad, very sad :-(

Not only are they “friggin stupid,” but they are, more and more, mean spirited toward actual working citizens who pay their salaries. A punk with a rap sheet as long as your arm will get far better treatment and far more ‘breaks’ than the housewife stopped for going over the speed limit on an empty road.

“Sniff, sniff, i smell bacon!”

Ewwww....that is so..so sixties!!

Did you know muslims don’t like pigs either?

Maybe, that is why they do so well in reverting prison inmates. It’s funny though...all “cons” didn’t do the crime and they were all set up by the cops.

LOL

There are materials out there that a person can pick up on how to avoid “being seen” and to act like everyone else and how not to be “noticed” by policemen... :-)

If someone really wants to do that, they can. I guess it depends on how serious they are about it.

Bear in mind that stupid things happen in every country, and that our tabloid press is particularly ferocious in its pursuit of juicy stories like this to whip their readership into a frenzy of righteous indignation, often employing the strategic use of ommission and fact-twisting to make the story even more infuriatingly fascinating to the suckers who subscribe to their rag....
