SECDEF Robert Gates and Shariah in Somalia
Shariah Finance Watch ^ | 15 Apr 09 | Shariah Finance Watch

In the wake of the brilliant rescue by US Navy SEALs of a US hostage held by Somali pirates over the weekend, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has sounded a decidedly defeatist tone unbecoming his high office, but rather typical, unfortunately, of his own philosophy. Gates says that there is basically no solution to the piracy problem because there are too many pirates, too many ships to protect and the ocean is too big.

We find it startling that the US Navy, working with key NATO allies, such as the British and French, couldn’t make piracy a very hazardous and unprofitable enterprise off the coast of Somalia. In fact, we don’t believe it for a second.

Keep in mind that this is the same Robert Gates who opposed the surge in Iraq. Gates was planning to fail in Iraq while better men, led by General David Petraeus, were planning for victory.

Can't do anything about North Korea, Somalia, etc. Gates is an intel weenie...much of that crowd are liberal idiots. Maybe because so many of them are recruited out of left-wing Ive League schools. Gates is no friend of the U.S. armed forces. Bad pick by W...he's more closely aligned with The Messiah, and is just a compliant bureaucrat doing B. Hussein's bidding to destroy the military.

Obama’s operating mode is to extend everything into a crisis while conducting an endless campaign. Gates falls right into the mold of hapless bureaucrat.

Same Gates who said he was going to cut Future Combat Systems? Oh, wait... I think Obama said that first.

The best thing I can say about Gates is that he’s one hell of a lot better than Les Aspin — Clinton’s Sec-Def during Clinton’s Somali disaster.

“there is basically no solution to the piracy problem because there are too many pirates,...”

I figure a couple of trips up and down the Somali coastline (we do seem to a fair idea where the pirates live) by B1 bombers loaded to the max with cluster bombs just might solve the problem of “too many pirates.”
Do this 4-5 days and I doubt we would have much of a problem left. And there are no innocents in those villages; all living there know where the money comes from, so they are ALL GUILTY.

The reason there are so many pirates is because there is big profit with little risk. Put some armed guards on the ships and take out a couple of dozen of their raiding parties and the risk won’t be worth it anymore.

What ever happened to the concept of the "Captain" is responsible for his ship, crew, and cargo. This is a typical example of of how responsibility is moved from the person with action authority to some "collective". Until these ship Captains say enough is enough, nothing will happen.

While reading the article, I happened to click the Sharia Compliant Banks tab. On the list is Maersk Logistics. Familiar name. Didn’t know they were into banking, however.

Gates has shown himself to be incapable of strategic thought. And we are supposed to accept his recommendations on weapons system cancellations???

Obama needs to find somebody better, except that I trust his judgment less than I trust Gates’.
