The wait for the Presidents new puppy ends today, but the fallout from his broken promise to the Humane Society should not. And, exclusive to this website, it now develops that Rush Limbaugh has recorded PSAs for the Humane Society guaranteeing that the controversy over the First Pup will not end.
By way of background: During the campaign, Obama said that his family would adopt a dog from a shelter if he won the election. This weekend, news broke that the new First Dog is not a shelter-animal, sparking criticism from animal-rights activists, including the Humane Society. As ABCs Jake Tapper reports:
Animal rights activists are chagrined with his decision. Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO Humane Society of the United States was clearly disappointed, noting that families like the Obamas, who are interested in a particular breed of animal or have special circumstances such as allergies in their household, can turn to their local animal shelter or breed rescue group.
Now comes a yet-to-be-released PSA from the Humane Society recorded by Rush Limbaugh last week (before the First Dogs identity was publicly known) and leaked onto YouTube yesterday (and sent to me today by a source close to the Humane Society).
In one of the new PSAs raising awareness about dog fighting, Limbaugh urges listeners to go to practically any animal shelter in the US and you can see the extent of the misery. Listen here:
The other PSA is focused towards religious and conservative radio listeners:
UPDATE: Late Tuesday, the Humane Society confirmed that Rush Limbaugh had recorded the PSAs. Read their full press release here.

Rush Limbaugh Records Audio Spots for The HSUS
April 14, 2009
Rush Limbaugh has recorded two statements of support for The Humane Society of the United States and its work to protect animals from cruelty and abuse: The first spot is on our partnerships with law enforcement agencies across the country to crack down on organized dogfighting and other animal cruelty crimes.
The second is on our outreach to communities of faith, and the moral obligation that we have to be good stewards of God's creatures.
The HSUS welcomes such vigorous statements of support from Americans of all points of view, and is grateful to Rush Limbaugh for reaching out to his audience with a message of kindness and compassion for animals. Like two-thirds of American households, Rush shares his home with a beloved pet his cat, Pumpkin.
The HSUS is a nonpartisan organization dedicated to making ours a kinder world for animals. Among our 11 million supporters one in every 28 Americans are Republicans, Democrats and Independents.

The Humane Society of the United States is the nation's largest animal protection organization backed by 11 million Americans, or one of every 28. For more than a half-century, The HSUS has been fighting for the protection of all animals through advocacy, education and hands-on programs. Isn’t the Humane Society anti-hunting?
Rush needs to look at what the HSUS is about. They aren’t the pet friendly group, but get funding because people think they are pet friendly like some of the local Humane Societies who are not part of HSUS. The HSUS is a radical animal rights organization and has been since Wayne Pacelle was put in charge.
If this is true, my respect for Rush is significantly lessened.
HSUS is PETA by another name and as such the information they give is dis-information. Dogs are not in vast supply in animal shelters, cats are. That’s why PETA/HSUS addresses euthanasia by combining those two species.
There is usually a waiting list for desirable dogs from animals shelters.
I believe that the Dept. of Homeland Security now considers the Humane Society of the USA an official Right Wing Extremist Organization. PETA of course is in the mainstream of animal rights.
