I guess it offends him
Georgetown University says it covered over the monogram IHS—symbolizing the name of Jesus Christbecause it was inscribed on a pediment on the stage where President Obama spoke at the university on Tuesday and the White House had asked Georgetown to cover up all signs and symbols there.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the IHS monogram that had previously adorned the stage at Georgetowns Gaston Hall was still covered up—when the pediment where it had appeared was photographed by CNSNews.com.
In coordinating the logistical arrangements for yesterdays event, Georgetown honored the White House staffs request to cover all of the Georgetown University signage and symbols behind Gaston Hall stage, Julie Green Bataille, associate vice president for communications at Georgetown, told CNSNews.com.
The White House wanted a simple backdrop of flags and pipe and drape for the speech, consistent with what theyve done for other policy speeches, she added. Frankly, the pipe and drape wasnt high enough by itself to fully cover the IHS and cross above the GU seal and it seemed most respectful to have them covered so as not to be seen out of context.
On Wednesday, CNSNews.com inspected the pediment embedded in the wall at the back of the stage in Gaston Hall, where Obama delivered his speech. The letters IHS were not to be found. They appeared to be shrouded with a triangle of black-painted plywood.
Pictures of the wooden pediment prior to Obamas speech show the letters IHS in gold. Many photos posted on the Internet of other events at Gaston Hall show the letters clearly.
The White House did not respond to a request from CNSNews.com to comment on the covering up of Jesus name at Gaston Hall.
Roman Catholics traditionally use IHS as an abbreviation for Jesus name. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, St. Ignatius of Loyola adopted the monogram in his seal as general of the Society of Jesus (1541) and thus became the emblem of his institute. The Society of Jesus is the formal name for the Jesuits.
Although the monogram was removed from the wooden pediment on the Gaston Hall stage where it would have been directly above and behind President Obama as he spoke, the letters IHS are posted elsewhere around the hall approximately 26 times on shields representing different parts of the United States and the world.
Couldn’t they have just changed it to “IOS”?
Is that like holding up a cross in front of Dracula or something?
Will there be an uproar from the Left ala John Aschroft and covered statuary in the hall?
Not a good reason. The solution was to tell Obama and his running dog lackeys to get the heck out and don’t come back.
maybe we need to try setting off the holy water sprinkles above him and see if he melts?
Mat 10:32 “Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my FATHER in heaven.
Mat 10:33 But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my FATHER in heaven.
How many ways will catholics be insulted before they stop playing door mat to people who disrespect them by their mere presence?
In that case, just change it to "POS" and all would be well.
It’s almost like that rumor that he’s a Muslim ... naw, that can’t be, he would’ve told us during the campaign when he released his birth certificate, medical, voting & school records and financials.
There’s nothing about 0 that’s IHS.
He didn’t have any trouble visiting the Blue Mosque.
...much less vote for those who wipe their feet.
I hope they can live with themselves when they go to meet Him. “Sorry I covered you up Jesus, but you know I didn’t want to offend a mere MAN”.
>Its almost like that rumor that hes a Muslim ... naw, that cant be, he wouldve told us during the campaign when he released his birth certificate, medical, voting & school records and financials.
Barry Soetoro converted to Islam and became Barrack Hussein Obama.
Shameful-Shameful Shameful, that a Catholic Institution had this abortionist there to begin with, but to deny Christ so he could visit is Shameful.
The Jesuits placed IHS on their crosses , it means “In His Service” It is shameful that now the Jesuits at Georgetown and the President of Notre dame appear to be in the service of Obama.
I wouldnt be surprised if next he appeared at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
But from the fruit he bears, I find it very hard to believe this piece of narcissistic scum considers Jesus Christ his personal savior and the lead he is to follow.
It makes sense, since Chairman Obama decreed that we are not a Christian nation.
He didn’t have any trouble visiting Hagia Sofia either.
Or, bowing to the person who keeps Mecca & Medina.
Georgetown, Notra Dame, Saint Mary’s would sell their institution to the devil if they thought it would please 0bama.
Who writes this stuff for CBS—a three-year-old? IHS stands for In Hoc Signum, by or in this sign, the sign being the cross, or the crossed letters of Chi (”X”), Rho (our “P”), the first two Greek letters of the word Christ.
Aside from that, I’m surprised Georgetown wasn’t the party insisting on the letters’ removal from the podium occupied by Obama.
It must have offended his Muslim sensibilities.
The monogram BHO replaced it.
Please . . . our Kenyan-born, illegal alien POTUS is a devout muslim, and he was offended. Nuff’ said.
Do we need any more proof? What a scumbag!
Rev Wright’s church is used by Muslims in business to cover up their Muslim background so why not ZERO? :) Have thought all along he was Muslim pretending to be a Christian.
Hmmm. I thought it meant, “I Hate School”
Somehow I doubt the left will be outraged by this like they were with Ashcroft and the statue (I thought that was also a bit silly myself)
He who is represented by IHS put BO where he is and can take him down as well. Arrogant little man.
Amazing they can focus on details like that but give DVD’s to Gordon Brown that he can only use in a Best Western.
I was thinking about Peter’s denial of Christ.
Georgetown should have told Obama to go elsewhere for his speech.
As if we required more proof...
I can’t decide what I’m most offended by, the request or the compliance to it.
IHS: Is Hussein Stupid?
A monogram of the name of Jesus Christ. From the third century the names of our Saviour are sometimes shortened, particularly in Christian inscriptions (IH and XP, for Jesus and Christus). In the next century the "sigla" (chi-rho) occurs not only as an abbreviation but also as a symbol. From the beginning, however, in Christian inscriptions the nomina sacra, or names of Jesus Christ, were shortened by contraction, thus IC and XC or IHS and XPS for Iesous Christos. These Greek monograms continued to be used in Latin during the Middle Ages. Eventually the right meaning was lost, and erroneous interpretation of IHS led to the faulty orthography "Jhesus". In Latin the learned abbreviation IHC rarely occurs after the Carlovingian era. The monogram became more popular after the twelfth century when St. Bernard insisted much on devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, and the fourteenth, when the founder of the Jesuati, Blessed John Colombini (d. 1367), usually wore it on his breast. Towards the close of the Middle Ages IHS became a symbol, quite like the chi-rho in the Constantinian period. Sometimes above the H appears a cross and underneath three nails, while the whole figure is surrounded by rays. IHS became the accepted iconographical characteristic of St. Vincent Ferrer (d. 1419) and of St. Bernardine of Siena (d. 1444). The latter holy missionary, at the end of his sermons, was wont to exhibit this monogram devoutly to his audience, for which some blamed him; he was even called before Martin V. St. Ignatius of Loyola adopted the monogram in his seal as general of the Society of Jesus (1541), and thus it became the emblem of his institute. IHS was sometimes wrongly understood as "Jesus Hominum (or Hierosolymae) Salvator", i.e. Jesus, the Saviour of men (or of Jerusalem=Hierosolyma).
So it’s true that the Muslim-in-chief hates Jesus.
I thought it was iota, eta, sigma, i.e. IHS as an abbreviation of IHSOYS. (Sorry, haven’t got an upsilon, so used a ‘Y’).
“Couldnt they have just changed it to IOS?”
If they were going to change it for Obama, they should have changed it to “IOU”
Shame on the childish Obama . . . and shame on Georgetown
This sounds like something a Muslim might do...
Now why would this symbol offend such a devout Christian first Black President??? Um, could it be that he is really a Muzzie hiding behind the Christian title? Imagine what would be said if Bush made such demand?
The letters are actually the first three letters in the name of Jesus as spelt in the Greek alphabet, which has much in common with the latin alphabet, but differs enough to cause confusion. The first letter is an iota, corresponding nicely to I, and the third is a sigma, corresponding to S. The middle is an eta, a vowel that neither English or Latin has, and in its capital form it looks like an H, but is pronounced nothing like an H. As most people encountering the three letter abbreviation do not think of Greek, alternate explanations have sprung up over the years.
