ROME An Italian cruise ship with 1,500 people on board fended off a pirate attack far off the coast of Somalia when its Israeli private security forces exchanged fire with the bandits and drove them away, the commander said Sunday.
Cmdr. Ciro Pinto told Italian state radio that six men in a small white boat approached the Msc Melody and opened fire Saturday night, but retreated after the Israeli security officers aboard the cruise ship returned fire.

Good.
“Never Again”.
Citizens disarmed agenda maximally reduced: a few shots in the air were enough to prevent the largest vessel eccer to be captured by pirates in History.
More proof that guns are the answer.
Awesome squirrel gun!@
See, this is why the world hates Israel. I private firm, hired by a private shipping company, deals with the problem with absolutely no UN help. Problem solved, but the control freaks have no opportunity to further their grip on everyone else’s lives- so this approach won’t meet the approval of the powers that be.
I want one of those! I fired one at training in the Navy (I was an FT-G). Woo hoo!
Yep!
It begins with the fact that they live in one of the areas of the world where the "empty shelves" was first reached,
It continues with the fact that they maximally reduced the War on Terror Hoax. (1)
It ends with the fact that they maximally reduced the "Citizens Disarmed is base for security" agenda.
Notes
(1) April 8: Somali pirates seize sixth ship within one week. This time taking 20 american hostages.
What does this have to do with "North Korean ICBM launch exposes ABM Hoax - End Times Reductionism overflying Japan", a few days earlier?

Yep, trouble is a lot of countries won't allow vessels into port with firearms on-board. The simple solution would be to come up with something akin to a paintball gun on steriods that shoots ball bearings with compressed air. Ships usually have huge air compressors, so it wouldn't be much of a leap to have a couple of non-firearm deck weapons on board. Many moons ago I used to have a BB machine gun that fired around 100 rpm using compressed air. I don't see why this type weapon couldn't be scaled up for these ships.....
They need to kill these pirates to discourage others and attack & sink the motherships so they can’t get offshore very far.
Instead of Rube Goldbergish devices to defy the intent while obeying the letter of the maritime regulations it would be much better to change the stupid regs !
That will make a good entry in the NRA citizens defending column.
I knew pirates would be cowards when faced with powder not hoses.
No, the solution is be be heavily armed, and have those arms stored on a small “battle boat” that remains offshore while the ship is in port.
Naw, the way it used to be was for the purser to keep the guns locked up until needed (such as a pending pirate attack), then every sailor on board would be issued his firearm. Crybaby anti-gun liberals are the reason they changed the rules.
Right, but my way fits the laws right now, and can be done right now by converting a lifeboat or such. :)
Better yes, but near impossible to get a hundred or so countries to change their laws in a reasonable time frame. What I proposed would certainly skirt the regs, but it would be much cheaper and faster than waiting for hundreds of bureaucrats to actually do something meaningful with their regulations. Necessity is the mother of invention and all....and Rube Goldberg would be proud!
“and attack & sink the motherships so they cant get offshore very far.” ...................... One Predator in the area should be able to take care of that, no?
The pirates would just wait until the ship is unarmed, then attack. Nothing to stop the pirates from attacking the "battle boat" either. If the pirates were to capture the proposed battle boat, they would gain arms they currently don't have, too.
How far is it from the lowest deck to the water?
THIS, is EXACTLY what SHOULD be happening every time these savages attack.
Kill 'em all (send a LOUD & CLEAR message that the civilized world will NOT put up with this piracy), let God (or allah) sort it out.
Exactly. Cut a few pirates in half with with high powered, air driven ball bearing guns, film it and distribute the video in the ports. Either that, or gather the remains and fly over the port in a C-130 and dump whatever is left on their shores as a warning.
...attack & sink the motherships so they cant get offshore very far.
Surprised that hasn't happened yet.....
Hope he has his concealed permit for that baby.
Those Israelis really know how to deal with terrorists.
We need to take lessons from them.
That's called a convoy and at that point you might as well be back to large ones since it's a more efficient use of said "battle boat." And navies have the best ones of those. It's not a self-sufficiency answer to cast in the face of control-freak leftists.
and attack & sink the motherships so they cant get offshore very far.
“One Predator in the area should be able to take care of that, no?”
I was thinking they’d make good targets for sub exercises. Sinking a few with subs should discourage others from wandering into international waters
Beautiful. What is that gun called? Caliber?
That’ll git er’ done!
I was thinking theyd make good targets for sub exercises. Sinking a few with subs should discourage others from wandering into international waters
So where is HE getting ammo? I can’t find any, let alone afford it.
I believe the Somalis are using recently captured ships complete with hostages on board as "mother ships", care to rethink your answer? They may be dirt poor, they aren't completely stupid.
Regards,
GtG
They really do. I did a telecom project in Tel Aviv back in the mid 1990's. At that time there were a slew of bus bombings going on. The Israelis were very careful to leave the carnage for folks to see for a few days to insure support for whatever measures they undertook as retaliation. I was there for a little over three months and witnessed it.
These have been standard equipment on United States Navy (and Coast Guard) ships since shortly after World War I.
Thank you, John Moses Browning.
GOOD! Blow the Pirates into a Million Bits! These aren’t Pirates, they are stinkin Terrorists and Extortionists! and Nobody wants to appear “Racists” for pointing out wht these Slimeballs really are! BLOW somemore outa the waters and they will disappear like the cowardly Rats they really are!:-)
Spectacular Pirate RAT EXTERMINATOR!
Bingo
Driving them off merely means different ship is going to be attacked.
When they stop coming home the rest of the pirates will have second thoughts.
Israeli security officers are bad ass.
Good for the Italians and Israelis. Meet piracy with force.
Love that picture but under Obama’s command it looks like a crime scene.
ZERO HUSSEIN is wreathing on the floor in utter pain that someone would dare shoot at some of his beloved Kinsmen simply because they are attacking and terrifying Civilized Human beings in order to extort huge sums of blood money:-(
Sounds like a good idea.
I shake my head every time this “non-news” issue hits the wires. I am disgusted how “pussified” our country has become. This pirate issue is akin to a fly in the kitchen. Swat the damn thing and be done with it!
MFO
That setup would “discourage” any pirate. Actually, it would dismember any pirate.
Nice Negative Thinking! What do You suggest? Setting up a Toll System where each ship daring to get within several hundred miles of Somalia pay a Toll to the Pirate’s Union for Safe Passage?? Zero Hussein will LOVE that idea!
Ocean passage credits
Who's post are you responding to? I suggested a non-firearm, air powered ball bearing gun mounted on the cargo ships to eliminate attacking pirates and still allow the ships to enter port under current maritime law. The only "toll" paid would be with pirate lives.
Where do you get this notion that I suggested some sort of toll system?
So, having guns on a ship does keep pirates away. Whadya know.
Thanks!! Do they fire sequentially or in tandem?
