ALERT: Swine Flu Strikes Northeast Ohio (9-Year-Old from Elyria in Lorain County)

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- The Ohio Department of Health says a 9-year-old boy who recently traveled to Mexico on vacation with his family has a confirmed case of swine flu.

Health department spokesman Robert Jennings said Sunday the boy is recovering at his home in Elyria, in northern Ohio's Lorain County. The child's name was not released.

Note: The child was in school all last week and starting feeling ill on Wednesday..

This is looking like a version of Globull Warming. Every sniffle will now be attributed to swine flu.

I think it’s just we’re taking it cautious. One of those; better safe than sorry times I suppose. Overblown would be if they shut down travel and trade (which wouldn’t shock me, seeing some of the reports from Mexico). But, if you look at the typical symptoms; it’s basically how everyone is this time of year. Allergies are killer in the spring. So we will have a lot of the ‘worried well’ reporting cases.

Let’s be careful about panicking. It may turn out to be serious, but the virus seems to be treatable with readily available drugs, and is certainly not always fatal. It’s very easy to make a story like this sound like the end of the world, but it may not turn out to be much at all in the grand scheme of things.

I’m guessing that for every confirmed case, there are several or more who don’t get tested.

Doubtful it could be a bio-attack, but you never know. If anyone’s ever read any Tom Clancy, where Jack Ryan becomes President and some Syrian (I think) terrorists release their own verison of the plauge. Of course, truth is stranger than fiction; right?

I thought the chain letter analogy for Captain Trips was really powerful, especially when King described the lives and actions of some of the “carriers” of CT. You feel sorry for the New York family knowing they’re all going to die. I really like the quote near the end of the chapter: “Chain letters don’t work. It’s a known fact. The million dollars or so you are promised if you’ll just send one single dollar to the name at the top of the list, add yours to the bottom, and then send the letter on to five friends never arrives. Yes. In order to confirm it’s Swine Flu 1HN whatever vs. the regular flu, they must do lab work (i.e. blood work).
