COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- The Ohio Department of Health says a 9-year-old boy who recently traveled to Mexico on vacation with his family has a confirmed case of swine flu.

Health department spokesman Robert Jennings said Sunday the boy is recovering at his home in Elyria, in northern Ohio's Lorain County. The child's name was not released.

This is looking like a version of Globull Warming. Every sniffle will now be attributed to swine flu.

Could this be a muslim thing?

I think it’s just we’re taking it cautious. One of those; better safe than sorry times I suppose. Overblown would be if they shut down travel and trade (which wouldn’t shock me, seeing some of the reports from Mexico). But, if you look at the typical symptoms; it’s basically how everyone is this time of year. Allergies are killer in the spring. So we will have a lot of the ‘worried well’ reporting cases.

Let’s be careful about panicking. It may turn out to be serious, but the virus seems to be treatable with readily available drugs, and is certainly not always fatal. It’s very easy to make a story like this sound like the end of the world, but it may not turn out to be much at all in the grand scheme of things.

I’m guessing that for every confirmed case, there are several or more who don’t get tested.

Is this going to be Obama’s Katrina?

Doubtful it could be a bio-attack, but you never know. If anyone’s ever read any Tom Clancy, where Jack Ryan becomes President and some Syrian (I think) terrorists release their own verison of the plauge. Of course, truth is stranger than fiction; right?

Why? You don’t believe in Swine flu, or you don’t believe people have the flu? Or that people have swine flu?

Do you believe in the 80 dead people in Mexico?

Do you think the WHO makes stuff up?

I’m just curious.

I thought the chain letter analogy for Captain Trips was really powerful, especially when King described the lives and actions of some of the “carriers” of CT. You feel sorry for the New York family knowing they’re all going to die. I really like the quote near the end of the chapter: “Chain letters don’t work. It’s a known fact. The million dollars or so you are promised if you’ll just send one single dollar to the name at the top of the list, add yours to the bottom, and then send the letter on to five friends never arrives. This one, the Captain Trips chain letter, worked very well. The pyramid was indeed being built, not from the bottom up but from the tip down- said tip being a deceased army security guard named Charles Campion. All the chickens were coming home to roost. Only instead of the mailman bringing each participant bale after bale of letters, each containing a single dollar bill, Captain Trips brought bales of bedrooms with a body or two in each one, and trenches, and dead-pits, and finally bodies slung into the oceans on each coast and into quarries and into the foundations of unfinished houses. And in the end, of course, the bodies would rot where they fell.” (Book, uncut edition p. 70)

Yes. In order to confirm it’s Swine Flu 1HN whatever vs. the regular flu, they must do lab work (i.e. blood work).

Yea, that’s how this seems to be going right now. They have a quick test which can determine between flu strains of the A or B variety. If it comes back B, you’re fine, you just have a ‘regular flu’. If it comes back A, you need further testing, which usually takes a few days, to determine if you do have the Swine varient of type A.

I am NOT a medical doctor, someone correct me if I’m wrong!

An interesting tidbit.

This week Kathleen Sebelius is going through the hearings to become head of HHS.

She is as pro abortion as they come. Killer Tiller gave her a contribution when she was governor of Kansas.

I could write the script for this one right now.

We are in crisis, and must have her confirmed IMMEDIATELY. Our nation is at risk and she must be confirmed without delay.

I hope the Republicans do not throw all the dirt under the rug.

She is a bad choice and will set the pro life movement back years.

They've already declared a national health emergency based on the few mild cases we have in this country. Nice test run though. Expect the next on on July 4 to coincide with the upcoming Tea Parties. Can't have all those tea bagging rednecks getting together when someone might get the sniffles. O can just suspend the constitution for this 'emergency'.

'scuse me, but I've got to go load some magazines .

Have there been enough cases in the U.S. yet to “guestimate” mortality rate of this thing? If it is a strange mix of human, avian, swine, etc flu bugs, why are they only referring to it in the news, as ‘SWINE FLU’? Or was that part about the strange mixture incorrect?

Ahhh, don't just blindly assume you've heard the ENTIRE story about how significant this may be. There is a compilation of communications from citizens in Mexico City on the BBC website that claim matters are much more signifcant... deaths in the hundreds, not dozens.

Majority Leader Harry Reid , D-Nev., has raised concerns about burning time filing procedural motions to limit debate on a handful of nominees.

The most notable, recent example: Obama’s nomination of Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to be Health and Human Services secretary. Although still expected to win confirmation in a vote scheduled for April 28, Sebelius, a Democrat, has been challenged by Republicans over her position supporting abortion rights. (Story, p. 9)

Yes. Very true. I do not believe the majority of people realize the important details about this particular strain. Of course, the worst of it is that it IS a new strain (looks like amorph of avian/swine and regular flu) and that it apparently does its worst damage on young and healthy people.

BELOW IS A COPY OF THE PRESS RELEASE SENT TO THE MEDIA SUNDAY:

For Immediate Release - Apr. 26, 2009

OHIOAN TESTS POSITIVE FOR SWINE FLU

COLUMBUS - The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) today confirmed a case of swine flu involving a 9-year-old boy from Lorain County. The patient is considered to have a mild case of the disease and is recovering at home.

Because this combination of strains of the influenza virus is new, ODH and local health departments remind Ohioans of the precautions they should take to avoid exposure. As with all newly emerging flu strains, no vaccine has yet been developed.

“I urge Ohioans to be alert to information about this new flu,” said ODH Director Alvin D. Jackson, M.D. “In addition, the tried-and-true saying about washing hands and covering one’s cough remains sound medical advice.”

Symptoms of this swine flu virus closely resemble seasonal flu, and include fever, weakness, coughing and lack of appetite.

ODH and local health departments are working with health care providers and hospitals around the state to determine if there are other cases. According to recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), all health care providers who see patients with flu-like symptoms and learn that the patient traveled to Mexico, affected counties in Southern California or Texas during the 7 days preceding their illness onset, should have nasal swab samples from the patient tested. Recommendations from ODH and CDC include:

· Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. · Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective. · Try to avoid close contact with sick people. · If you get sick with influenza, see your doctor and CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.

Additional information is available on the ODH and CDC Web sites at http://www.odh.ohio.gov and http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/. The Ohio Department of Health will be providing additional updates as information becomes available.

I respectfully disagree with your opinion on this. I’ve been reading a LOT of articles on this, and have been discussing this with a lot of FReepers of various backgrounds, and while our government being the A**** they are may use this to advance their agenda, the virus itself is very real, as are the risks that this could indeed become a pandemic (one that in all honesty mankind is ‘overdue’ for when you look at the history of ‘medicine’ and/or illness — our world IS ‘overpopulated’ (not in the sense of those wacko liberals who want to abort babies), but in the sense that due to modern travel, large cities etc... it’s actually pretty amazing we haven’t seen something like this years ago...).
