SIGNIFICANT INCREASED RISK OF PANDEMIC, BUT NOT FOREGONE CONCLUSION--SIREN ALERT ON DRUDGE
DRUDGE ^

Posted on 04/27/2009 1:43:18 PM PDT by pillut48

No story/source yet--is this about Mexico? Or America? Or is it a global warning??

Whatever it might be, it seems the military may be taking over the streets before too long, using this sudden 'pandemic' as an excuse?!

I am really irritated to hear about all of these students that went to Mexico for spring break when they were supposed to be avoiding the country because of the escalating drug violence. People are just so caught up in having a good time that they have thrown common sense out the window. When I was in school we never got a *break*! Breaks were for people with JOBS!

I hope we never have a constitutional crisis or some despot trying to take over the country. 6 hours without electricity would have us on our knees. And you damn kids get off my lawn!

Made me laugh though....pretty funny considering that would probably be something Obama would do in regards to the flu outbreak....since he has no idea how to handle things anyway. ;)

In Lord Zero’s speech today he opened with comments about how this flu is a good example of why we need more money to fund research.

Why did he bother stating such a thing?

All he has to do is cut more tree's and continue the feeding of the printing presses.

Sure starting to look to me like the tail is shaking the crap outta da pooch.

Photobucket

At the risk of sounding conspiratorial, I think this a matter of these four taking advantage of a method to declare martial law and confiscate all the guns owned by civilians...they will start with the membership lists of the NRA, IMO.

That will pave the way for the "National Security Force" you know, the force that is as "well-funded and armed as the US Military" to be set up as the only militia, under direct control of Rahm Emanuel.

Lol.

When I was a youngster on active duty one of the older NCO types told us a story on a slow night. He talked about when Clark AFB in the Phillipines closed for good because of the volcano. He said that while the volcano erupted and everyone rushed around like chickens with their heads cut off, him and a few of his buddies were out front of their barracks. He said him and all of his guys got drunk and listened to some thrash metal while ash poured down on them.

Basically, he told us in a situation like that you can either be calm and savor the moment or run around in a crazy frenzy.

I grew up on a farm and helped with the pigs for several years, I wonder if I am immune to the flu because I was subjected to lesser variant of it that my immune system could have inoculated me against?

Yet another reason I am glad I grew up on a farm.

Cautious optimism, and vigilance are the key here, IMHO.

As FDR said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”. Panic is NOT a good idea on ANYONE’s part — especially at this stage...

For those who are the ‘praying type’ and find themselves a bit unsettled right now — I have personally found Psalms to be particularly helpful in times of stress or worry...

[One other thing I’d like to share with my fellow FReepers: As for those who actually find themselves with worry so great that they can’t control their heart-rate and calm down, a call to your doctor, or a visit to the ER for a possible panic attack, heart attack, or stroke is NOT the WORST idea (especially if it’s just a phone call that helps you rule out things that require emergency medical attention (like a stroke or heart attack). Also, if you find yourself irrationally worried at this point, or become obsessed about this topic — also not a bad idea to go out and enjoy the spring weather, or just spend time with friends and family, watching a good movie (particularly a favorite comedy), or a variety of other things that get your mind OFF this topic for a while.]

It seems that the media, including Foxnews, is reporting that everyone is in a panic across the globe in fear of "the other white meat sniffles and coughs".

Keeping with the Homeland Security Department's non-use of the words "War On Terror" or "terrorists", I thought I would create a new DHS politically correct name.

I agree with the other poster about preventing large gatherings. level 5 might be stopping of movement. When they close the schools, it might be too late. I wonder what the boys at Fort Detrick are doing? If you see them running for the hills, it might be all over but the shouting. John Ringo has a now chilling book on this called The Last Centurion that talks of a liberal response to a bird flu plus massive global cooling event with a President who sounded a lot like Hillary.

“the other white meat sniffles and coughs”.

LOL. :)

I’m personally annoyed that they are calling this “swine flu”. I’m living in an agricultural area right now, and frankly calling it “swine flu” doesn’t denote the proper ‘respect’ for what doctors and researchers and others are dealing with right now...

I really wish they’d call it something more descriptive, or different something like perhaps; Mexican Avian/Swine Flu or something (to denote the first appearance and highest concentration, and seemingly highest fatality rate’s geographic location, as well as including the Avian signifier to differentiate between the naturally occurring Swine Flu Viruses that are NOT capable of Human-Human transmission, and are common among people who have close contact with live infected pigs for whatever reason, and this particular Virus.

This is especially important in light of the fact that our media isn’t the greatest at relaying accurate information, especially about topics that are much more complicated than your average ‘car crash’ story, especially when it involves a more complex than usual understanding of medicine and illness to accurately report on this situation, IMHO.

If the CDC and such don’t do, IMHO, more to focus in on specific information on behalf of responsibly informing our public and taking into the consideration the state of the world’s mass media in regards to this disease we will either have undue panic, or failure to recognize a ‘known danger’ that we can do a lot to combat against if we work together...

ALL JHMO...

THEY NEED TO CALL IT WHAT IT IS: A genetically-engineered retrovirus or RNA virus that was created in a lab by combining human influenza, avian flu, and swine flu.

Because they’re reporting 1600 cases and 100 deaths. That’s clearly an under-reporting, trying to keep people clam. But it’s very stupid, because if that were true it would mean that manbirdpig as a 6.25 mortality rate. 1918 Spanish flu had 2.5%, worst the world has ever seen. A rate of 1% would mean there are 10,000 cases. So, the only thing we can know about the numbers is that what we’re getting isn’t true.

in the 1970’s they prepared us for almost two years for a Swine Flu pandemic that never came (and for which the vaccine killed far more than the flu).

which is why they need to be careful. Anytime you innoculate large numbers of people there will be a small percentage that will have an adverse reaction and die. The media will advertize the dozens that die and the public not understanding this will panic and not take the shots.

U.S. Slow to Learn of Mexico Flu
Canadian Officials Knew of Rare Strain Before Americans Did

By David Brown

Sunday, April 26, 2009

U.S. public health officials did not know about a growing outbreak of swine flu in Mexico until nearly a week after that country started invoking protective measures, and didn’t learn that the deaths were caused by a rare strain of the influenza until after Canadian officials did.

Good time line for mexico at link...

I agree, I can't logically understand how something could've mutated so quickly - espeically with the wide geographic range of the strains - and combined and in the process made the jump from animal-to-human, to human-to-human transmission so quickly either. I'd honestly LOVE for someone to prove me wrong in my understanding of how viruses can mutate, and how this could've happened besides the cliche of some geneticist screwing around in some lab somewhere... [Well, to be completely honest either that or GOD. -- just saying...]

As for what we should call this disease, I thought the following made a lot of sense...

My 17-year-old daughter [FReeper Izzy_Box] suggested a "short" name for this new flu would be the "CHIMERA FLU".

I think it's short, "catchy" (no pun intended), and correctly identifies is as a genetically altered virus that combines at LEAST 4 different known viruses, and can be transferred from human-to-human.

Just some suggestions to share...

One more thing... I read early yesterday when I started reading some of these articles a post that said one of the first identified victims of this disease that died was a Pakistani (can't remember if he was a tourist, or lived there, or what...). That could mean something, or nothing, but if anyone knows the article or post I'm talking about, could they send me, or post the link to it, please? :)
