The Wall Street Journal is one thing. The New York Post is another. If I can’t read the NY Post, I can read the Daily Mail. The Genie’s out...he ain’t going back.

If the most read news sources all go to subscription even at a $2-4 per month, it might make them financially viable.
I would pay that much to read USA today online if I got the entire paper.
To: FromLori
I had been wondering when this would happen. I knew it was coming with the death of this media coming closer.

Only if all news organizations charge will this work.
And there is no reason,tens of thousands of ordinary people can't each attend public hearings,meetings, or even review the public police files and publish what they hear and see!

He's extrapolating from his Wall Street Journal experience to his other newspapers. That's a faulty analysis. Unlike just about every other paper in the country, the WSJ doesn't just reformat AP wire stories around local ads - it has unique material you can't find anywhere else. Also, WSJ subscribers often see it as a way of making money and is therefore worth an investment - not something your typical USA Today reader does.

Ain't going to work. In no way can The Sun, The Mirror, The Times, The New York Post, The Guardian, The New York Times.....and thousands of others....all survive on a subscription model for the exact same product.
Plus there will always be somebody willing to put things on the net for free. All it takes is ONE free news website to destroy all subscription based sites.
They will also discover that a liberal clientele is not going to pay for news the same way a bunch of relatively conservative businessmen are willing to pay for the Wall Street Journal.

Current days of free internet will soon be over, says media mogulEveryone is already paying for the Internet.
So they will charge to acesss certain sites?
F' um.
I will never pay for that.
Too many will offer it for free. If not, I and others will start new, free news sites.

There are too many (free) web sources for AP and similar articles.
Few would pay to read them just because they were via some News Corp website.
Unless New Corp comes up with original content, most people aren’t going to buy it online.
==
This trend might force news websites to make greater strides in producing original content, rather than the garbage they package now.
==
The paradigm of charging just because the paper version did may not work. Others have tried it.

It didn’t work for the New York Times, and there is always a way to find the WSF copy if you try. Wonder if old Rupert can pull it off.

This is true, but if it were to be say, FR, then contributions would have to go way up. This quarter has been really tough here.

If everyone starts charging, you won’t. The only way is to get our own boots on the ground, so to speak.

Revenue streams from advertising, be it hardcopy or digital. We are entering the golden age of advertising where the innovative, risk takers will thrive while manipulating an almost virgin medium.
