Alan Keyes among 21 arrested at Notre Dame May 8, 2009 1:29 PM Former Illinois U.S. Senate candidate Alan Keyes and 20 other protesters were arrested this morning when they refused to leave the Notre Dame campus during a protest of President Obama's upcoming commencement address there, a university spokesman said.

Well, you know if Keyes had beaten Obama in 04, it could have been him in the WH today and making that commencement speech.

Just got here and read this! WOW! Prayers up!! I read the stuff and it made me laugh....they only allow student body groups APPROVED by them to protest! Like they would approve it?! Think not!! More interesting....the police show up OFF CAMPUS to tell/ warn/ threaten Dr Keyes??!!!! Like, what, that was a favor?!

In their efforts to thwart trouble (sarc), instead they have fed what they feared. They have now increased public awareness of the whole mess they have created and added to it a public icon. Sometimes in their stupidity, people create that which they feared, by their own reaction. WOOO-HOOO! Notre Dame scored again, this time, against themselves. They forgot which end their goal was at. Gotta love it!

God be with Dr Keyes and all those who were arrested. Father God, open the eyes of the blind people of this republic to see the glaring truth of Obama and his administration before it is too late. Lord, stop them in their tracks. Have mercy on America! In Jesus Name AMEN!

The picture I see here is hardly inflamatory. The right has been nuanced to a Perry Como response to the Marxist
governing elite.

What is outrageous is Notre Dame inviting the Creep in chief.

“It just turns people off,”

BDS turned people off, but it still won them the election. When people see genuine outrage, they think maybe there’s something to be outraged about.

Plus, taking abortion to the streets is causing a massive culture shift with regards to its acceptability.

Same is true in this war against abortion. Every tactic makes it’s contribution. These blood covered carriages are perhaps the flamethrower equivalents. Very gruesome, revolting perhaps even to those who are pushing them, and possibly more effective than we can imagine.

The gruesome photos change more minds than any arguments, which is why the pro-death crowd reacts so violently against them.

There's nothing wrong with this tactic per se, as you've said. And it's far better to be doing something, than nothing at all.

Alan Keyes knew in advance that he would be arrested by breaking this university’s rules. And yet, this same man gives fine lectures on the rule of law.

There is no contradiction here at all. Alan was simply engaging in civil disobedience. He realizes that laws against trespassing are licit, and he was willing to go to jail for trespassing. But he also understands that Notre Dame is violating a much higher law, the honoring of someone dedicated to the destruction of innocent human life, and he was engaging in a tactic which he thought was suitable in opposition.

Is this an example of the ends justifying the means? No, because Alan's act of trespassing was not intrinsically evil, but simply a violation of a civil (practical) law, somewhat analogous to speeding on the way to the hospital.

H.L. Mencken once said that in a university the word “conscience” is that “little voice that says your funding might be jeopardized”.

That'll leave a mark. Mencken was right on that one.

Bravo for Keyes, this isn’t any less important than the march on Selma was.

The lack of support from blacks is ironic, considering the fact that black babies are aborted at a higher rate than white babies.

I don’t believe in breaking the law on a college campus for any reason

In the 1950's the laws on many college campuses made it a crime for black people to register for class. To our shame many conservatives did not take part in the civil rights movement to end this evil. In the 1930's in Germany the law required citizens to inform the police if they knew of a Jew who wasn't in a concentration camp. Would you have gone along with this evil, or are their higher goals than obeying the law?

However, how can I stand on moral ground if I believe that because they get away with it, I should to?

That's not my argument, if someone (let's take Keyes, he's a good example) breaks the law, he should suffer the legal consequences. Keyes went to jail. They let him out, and now he will trespass on ND property against, and presumably be arrested and go to jail again. At some point he will be in front of a judge.

That's how civil disobedience protests work. Do the crime, do the time.

The earlier post with the reasons, Lefties given a pass, are that they don't do the time.

THUS if Lefties do this kind of stuff, I, and others, complain loudly and long about them. Which is what you originally objected too.

He is a gifted orator. I’ll bet he is well recieved by even those who disagree with him.

Big events may or may not get big media coverage, which may or may not reflect accurately the moral imperatives related to the event.

But big events are merely an assembly of warm bodies. Hearts and minds are impacted one at a time.

Keyes has always been about getting publicity. When told to stay off the grass — stay off the grass.

If this had been a group that doesn’t grandstand, I would give them the benefit of the doubt but Keyes and Terry go out of their way to get face time. They intentionally do things they know will get them in the news and take advantage of situations.

Any Keyes/Terry supporting not seeing that needs a new pair of glasses.

This type of tactic is taken right from their own playbook and it seems to work pretty well.

We need to do more because our old tactics got us pushed right into a fascist regime.

Why is the baby carriages with blood “non-helpful.” That is showing disgust with Notre Dame’s Administration for inviting an abortion advocate, Obama, to speak at a Catholic college. Catholic doctrine says that doing abortions is breaking God’s law, “Thou shall not kill.” Good for Alan Keyes. He knows we are not meant to live in this world forever but we are meant to live forever with God. Those who cannot or will not obey God’s law will never make it to eternal bliss with Him. Breaking God’s law is not-helpful.

I’m actually a little surprised they arrested Alan Keyes; he announced a couple days ago that this was his intent, I half expected them to refuse to arrest him.

You are right.

I recall, back in the days at college, when leftists would construct shantytowns to protest south Africa. They effectively were squatters on campus property - but were never arrested and carted off. There is probably a double-standard at play here.

You haven't established to my satisfaction that what these people did is a matter for public (Government) attention.

Chuckle, it's obvious from your fighting even to be drawn into the ring that you are fearful of an honest fight about this issue.

Merriam Webster, PUBLIC;" of, relating to, or affecting all the people or the whole area of a nation or state."

You obviously want to hide from how M/W defines public.

If you want to continue this discussion, give me the word we should use instead of 'public'.

Finally things are becoming so very bad that decent people are starting to wake up. I hope there is still time to bring back decency. It will only come through belief in the ability of our LORD to change that which otherwise would be impossible. Hopefully He will continue to extend His mercy to us who have been undeserving and careless for so long.

“look fringy”

When you say Look fringy, to whom are you referring?

Are you talking about Liberal Dem’s...are you talking about the skittish undecideds who jump either way depending on which side of the REPUBLOCRAT military political industrial complex does the best job in bufaloing them in any given election year?

So to whom does Alan Keyes look “fringey”?

I’m not criticising you, just need more information. After-all Satan might have accused Eve of being “fringey” and “not like the Gods” had she steadfastly refused to eat of the forbidden fruit!

Now a bunch of folks running around on Pentecost with a flame on their heads, declaring in different languages the King ship of Jesus Christ, had folks split...some believed God, some called them drunkards or in the modern vernacular...”Fringey folks!”

I think if Keyes and company had joined arms, done a candelight vigil, something along those lines, it would have been more powerful. That’s just my opinion.

Ahh, but do you have in mind a class of folks who would be more turned off than usual?

I ask this in all sincerity because the political situation is such that many reasonable folks are starting to be considered more and more “fringey”, especially in light of how DHS guidelines are depicting conservatives. Even quiet non confrontational types who are just trying to live non-controversially and raise their families are being called and depicted as evil and anti society if they happen to hold views such as limited government and traditional morality. Some on the left are seeking to cause flash-points by which they are trying to justify further enslavement by rules and by taking of our arms and liberties. So what is “fringey” and at what point do you and I become “fringey” and subject to imprisonment by the evil left?
