If you make big bucks — or enjoy alcohol, cigarettes and Coke — the government might hit you up to pay for fixing the nation’s health care system.

On Tuesday, the Senate Finance Committee peeked into vending machines and liquor stores, company payrolls and health savings accounts, looking for a mix of tax increases and spending cuts as a way to pay for a health overhaul — which could cost more than $1.5 trillion over 10 years.

Experts thought the big debate might be public plan vs. no public plan. But that may well pale in comparison to the difficulty of settling on a way to finance health care reform.

“I wish there were a number of painless options,” Robert Greenstein, executive director of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, wrote in his prepared testimony. “There aren’t.”

There appeared to be a bubble of support among the experts for taxing bad behavior, including a $2 tax on a pack of cigarettes and a higher excise tax on alcohol.

“The Senate Finance Committee considers the option of taxing vices to pay for health care reform. “

As taxes make these vices pricey, people will remember that tobacco grows in the ground, and a still is not high-tech. American entrepreneurship will continue to amaze the world.

How about taxing a real killer-fried poultry!

I hate chicken. Tax the hell out of it, turkey too!

Not that difficult to grow, depending on what part of the country you’re in. Good luck on curing it. Do you have a big barn?

You know, this is reminiscent of the colonies right around the time of the Stamp Act.

People back then were totally fed up with taxes that amounted to a few percent, and the Crown saw fit to impose more, without giving anything back to the producers.

Geez, I hate when I’m right.
Just before the latest tax increase on cigs, I was telling my customers that soda and snacks would be next. Most laughed at that.

Thank you, Mr. Obama...you’ve already cut my business by a third with the cig tax. Now you buttwipes want to shove the knife in deeper and eliminate another third of my income.
Damn you all to hell.(and I really mean that!)
Mr. Obama, Why do you hate widows and children so much?

It was my dream to run a little country store.
Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

Yes, I saw the beer/booze tax in the rest of the article, before I typed that.

Now Obama is micromanaging Cheerios cereal as headlined on Drudge.

He can kiss terrorists asses but go after cheerios what an empty suit!

Exactly. Fatty, greasy, high cholesterol foods are much more harmful to you than adult beverages (used in moderation.

Tobacco I have no sympathy for, but if it's so harmful, who don't they just ban it outright?

Because they want to extort the most amount of money from addicts without killing the cash cow.

By the way, I think smokers should get a rebate. Lifetime smokers die an average ten years earlier than non-smokers - saving lots of public money in social security and medicare payouts.

"Saiga 12?"

That's it! I found one, and jumped at the chance. The gun shop that has it is a pretty good distance from me, so I called and literally made a deposit on it over the phone. I'll probably pick it up this weekend. It looks like you can get quite allot of accessories for it, judging from the pic. Are they reliable? Normally I wouldn't buy a gun without looking at it in person, but the gun dealer said it was brand new/never been shot.

I can't wait to buy one of those high cap drums for it. No matter what. One thing we can be sure of is these shotguns WILL NOT be legal someday. It's just a matter of time.....

The collapsible stock and triple-rail fore end are reliable. The RGB scope and laser/flashlight combos are great and available from Sportsman’s Guide. The 20 round drum can be tricky and requires a little work to get it to fit and feed correctly. Just be patient. The best vendors I’ve found for after-market parts are Gilbert’s Guns and Mississippi Auto Arms. Google them.

You’re right. They are bound to be made illegal at some point. Best of luck.

Thanks for the tips. I picked it up yesterday. Out of the box, it seems like a great shotgun. With about $500 or so worth of accessories, a little gunsmithing, and mags it will be an incredible defense weapon.
